Louisiana: A History
Episode One Episode Two Episode Three Episode Four ... Episode Six is the most ambitious and exciting project in the 25-year history of Louisiana Public Broadcasting . This six-part series will tell the colorful story of Louisiana for the citizens and students of our state. More than just a review of historic events, this series will explore the rich legacy of the many cultures that have left their imprint on Louisiana, and will help viewers understand why Louisiana is truly a state like no other. The series will begin with pre-history and explore the major eras, events and personalities that have shaped Louisiana through the modern era. It will include the contributions and history of every region of the state and will reflect our cultural diversity, a critical factor in understanding why Louisiana is different from other southern states. will combine historical renderings, rarely seen photographs, and historical documents with powerful videography to create a unique view of our state. Using old journals, correspondence and family reminiscences, the story will also reveal the voices of real people describing how they lived, worked, played and survived. In essence, this series will explain "what we are" as a state by showing us "who we are as a people."

    Claiborne Letters Index
Part III As 1804 begins William Claiborne is busy reconstructing a government that he finds corrupt and disorganized. In the first three months of the year he hands out commissions to new district commandants throughout lower Louisiana. The French and Spanish officials and troops linger and hold on to archives, The river is becoming crowded with refugees from the French West Indies and he has trouble keeping his own appointees in office.
Claiborne is concerned that his letters to the nation's capital have not been answered when, in late March, he finally gets regulations for commerce and navigation and instructions about organization of the militia.

  • to serve the region, which has a unique range of cultural diversity and a rich historic and prehistoric heritage, and in which its residents have justifiably great pride; to provide a comprehensive and high quality curricular program for undergraduate majors and graduate students at master's and doctoral levels; to conduct seminal and sustained research and scholarship befitting a department of premier academic rank; to provide high quality general education courses for non-majors; to provide service at the highest levels in our professions as well as to the University, community, region, and state; and in our role as the University's principal department for exploring the relations of nature and culture, to articulate interdisciplinary discourse, scholarship, and programmatic development among the humanities and the social and physical sciences.
  • Introduction

Last spring Geography and Anthropology prepared an initial and general response to the LSU Planning Document 1.2. We believe the statements contained therein are still of value and hope they will be considered along with this document, which provides, as requested by the Provost, "an action-oriented agenda for positive change." The list of specific proposed actions are here organized according to each of the nine Strategic Directions. We expect the execution of these 50 items will make our Departmental activities more efficient and improve our national ranking.

LOUISIANA SOCIAL STUDIES CONTENT STANDARDS Grades 9-12 GEOGRAPHY: Physical and Cultural Systems FOCUS Geography, the study of the spatial aspects of human existence, enables students to find answers to questions about the world around them. A geographically informed person sees, understands, and appreciates the connections among people, places, and environments. Understanding these connections requires an acute awareness of space, which can be identified in terms of location, distance, direction, pattern, shape, and arrangement. With a strong grasp of geography, students will be prepared to understand issues and solve problems in the contemporary world. The standards and benchmarks contained in this strand should be applied throughout the social studies curriculum. STANDARD Students develop a spatial understanding of Earth’s surface and the processes that shape it, the connections between people and places, and the relationship between man and his environment.
As students in Grades 9-12 extend and refine their knowledge, what they know and are able to do includes: A.
