  • 1. What is PASS?
PASS stands for Practice Assessment/Strengthen Skills. PASS is a Web-based practice test for Louisiana students. PASS serves as a continuation of education reform efforts in Louisiana by giving students an opportunity to practice skills that are similar to those on the LEAP 21 and GEE 21 and to provide instruction to help strengthen those skills. There are three levels for PASS: In addition to enabling students to practice skills, PASS also offers students an opportunity to learn about Louisiana geography and life science (elementary school level), outer space (middle school level), and world geography and cultures (high school level). As students complete each test, they uncover a new destination on a map. Each new destination shows interesting facts about that destination, along with links to Internet resources. 2. http://www.bgrg.com/geodesy/page3.htm
GEODESY is a program which provides a digital environment for teachers and students to study Earth's systems in accordance with the Geography for Life: National Geography Standards . It uses ESRI's ArcView 3.0 software as its GIS engine, and extends its capabilities with a series of external programs to enhance the user interface and to do data and image processing. It is based on the use of local data to enable the user to explore the physical and human systems in his/her own community, and then to study the spatial relationships between them. There are three core tracks to follow, each introducing the student to an essential component of geographic information systems use and analysis: Geographic Relationships , and Geographic Projects . Throughout each core track and screen, the user has access to a comprehensive database of text and graphics through the use if the GEODESY KnowledgeBase
The initial GEODESY project encompassed a two year development, programming, testing and distribution period. The first prototype (Beta 1.1) was produced in April 1996, and was tested by four school across the US. These include a public 4th grade class in Orinda, California; a private 8th grade class in Slidell, Louisiana; a public magnet 12th grade class in Chalmette, Louisiana; and a 4th grade home school in Carriere, Mississippi. The latest prototype version was released in February 1997, and was tested again at the original four sites, as well as at selected school sites and science centers in California and Mississippi.

It replaces a prototype version released in 1996. The CD is the culmination of several years of data development and assembly by sponsoring agencies, and was developed by Louisiana State University with funding from the Louisiana Oil Spill Coordinator's Office. The spatial data on the CD includes a satellite image of Louisiana with environmental, transportation, boundary, and geographic data in raster, polygon, line and point format. Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. Intergraph Corporation. Vector data are ArcView shapefile format and NAD-83 geographic latitude/longitude coordinates (decimal degrees). Raster data are packbit compressed geotiffs, NAD-83 UTM zone 15 coordinates (meters). The CD comes with a user interface that provides easy access to instructions and documentation, software installation, and tutorials. The tutorials provide help for utilization of the GIS software and introductions to GIS concepts. The spatial data are accompanied by fully compliant Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) metadata. There is also a satellite tour of Louisiana accessible from the user interface . Data on the CD are the best publicly available spatial data sources. Additional data compatible with the CD is available on the

After discussions of a compass rose and the various directions, I give the students the work sheet below to do showing the directions to places around the school community. Since these kids have walked to most of these places, they have a general idea of the directions and where the places are in relation to the school.
As a follow-up, I have them do a home compass rose showing their house and eight well known locations around them.
