Summary of Activities to Date
The report is organized around the components and elements contained in the 2001-2002
work plan; each component is followed by the related progress information.
The Capital Area PK-16+ Council continues to be actively engaged. Each of four task force
subgroups held a meeting and prepared draft plans for implementation: Professional Development
Schools (5 Dec., 2001), Aligning K-12 Curricula with Post-Secondary Curricula (5 Dec. 2001),
Certification/Alternative Certification (5 Dec. 2001),and Use of Technology to Enhance
Teaching and Learning (13 Dec. 2001). The plans were presented at a 28 January 2002 full
Council meeting and priority actions identified. All activities are documented and available on the LSU website (http://www.lsu.edu) under Academic Affairs/PK-16. The LSU Coordinator and representatives from East Baton Rouge Parish School Board (EBRPSB), LSU College of

    The Arkansas Project for Children with Deafblindness is a federally funded project, administered through the Arkansas Department of Education, Special Education, that serves individuals from birth through the age of 21 who are deafblind or who are at risk of being deafblind. The Project, which is in the second year of a four-year funding cycle, provides training, technical assistance and information to families, educators and others who work with these individuals.     The means by which states have sought to publicly evaluate their public school districts and/or individual schools vary. The following categories are included in table 1, below:
    • Student outcome - measures such as attendance/dropout rates, graduation rates, graduate plans, student/staff ratios, etc., that give added insight on school environment
    • Special populations - numbers or percentages of special student populations, whether disabled, gifted, vocational, English as a Second Language, etc.
    • School safety - statistics that go beyond reporting suspensions/expulsions to actually detailing specific crimes committed in school
    • Demographics - particularly ethnic and poverty breakdowns
    • Student performance - comparisons of results of statewide norm- and criterion-referenced tests

    The U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Rural Development mission area and the 1890 Land-Grant colleges and universities are working together on a new approach to support the development of businesses that create quality jobs. This partnership will help the 1890 institutions provide businesses with the assistance needed to organize and operate efficiently and profitably.
    The 1890 institutions have some of the best agricultural science and business education programs in the nation. USDA is building on the strength of these programs to ensure that quality education related to small business development is also available in these communities.
    Program Goals
    • Develop income-producing projects for under-developed rural communities. Create self-sustaining, long-term economic development in targeted areas of high unemployment through partnerships with the universities and community-based organizations. Assist and guide these communities in becoming self-sustainable.

    While most programs operated by Little Dixie are in Choctaw, McCurtain and Pushmataha Counties, there are some efforts that take us well out of southeast Oklahoma. One such program is Little Dixie's Self-Help Assistance Resource Education (SHARE) program. Since 1980, Little Dixie has held a contract with USDA Rural Development to administer training and management assistance to Rural Development and Self-Help Housing grantees in an 11-state region of the country. Little Dixie staff members travel throughout the central part of the country to provide training and monitoring services. The training includes overall program structuring, planning and operational management such as budgeting, staffing, etc. Among the areas monitored are: program compliance reviews; expenditures of program administrative funds; clientele contruction money; and construction quality. Each year, Little Dixie's SHARE staff monitors approximately $4 million in administrative budgets and $20 million in construction budgets of Self-Help Housing Program grantees. States currently being served by the program are: Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming.

  • What is a Beowulf? It's a kind of high-performance massively parallel computer built primarily out of commodity hardware components, running a free-software operating system like Linux or FreeBSD, interconnected by a private high-speed network. It consists of a cluster of PCs or workstations dedicated to running high-performance computing tasks. The nodes in the cluster usually don't sit on people's desks; they are dedicated to running cluster jobs. It is usually connected to the outside world through only a single node.
