Weeks was kept extremely busy seeing to the management of the plantation holdings of the David Weeks Estate, her children's inheritance. Her brothers advised and assisted her, but she often dealt directly with overseers concerning the sugar plantation on Grand Cote. In addition to decisions on acreage to be planted in cane and food crops, supplies to be purchased, and marketing matters, as a sugar planter, Mary was also responsible for the needs of the slaves on Grand Cote and at the Shadows, over 150 men, women and children. This meant making sure there was sufficient food and clothing for everyone and that adequate housing and medical attention were provided when necessary. In addition to the plantation, Mary also saw to the needs of her children, hiring tutors to teach at the schoolhouse behind the main house and later locating good boarding schools and colleges in which to enroll the five children who survived childhood. After I graduated from high school I worked my way through business college, cooking, and waiting and bussing tables at the boarding house. Mama offered other girls from the business college room and board if they would help set up, wait and buss tables. There was always a turnover of girls helping out. Some of the girls used to come back every year to visit Mama up until she died. My Mama started the business in a house located on the corner of Pujo and Ford Street in downtown Lake Charles. We did a good business at this location, but Mama always had her eye on the "big house" on the corner of Iris and Common. The business continued to grow, and Mama was able to see her dream come true, and bought the "big house". Mama again set this house up as a boarding house. With the declaration of war and the onslaught of Fort Polk Soldiers, combined with the construction and opening of the Olin Mathison Facility, downtown was booming and the business grew even bigger.

Articles from the March 2000 issue of Homeward Bound , a quarterly publication of Providence House Plans announced for education center Caution: Building Zone! Providence House will construct a 4,000 square-foot Education Center for children and adults on property located across Cotton Street from the main building. Construction is expected to begin in mid-summer. The new facility will sit behind the existing playground, and will contain a new Child Development Center, computer lab, and multi-purpose room which can be subdivided for meetings, tutoring, counseling, and other needs. The new building was designed by architect Clarence Babineaux to look like a residential home, complementing the existing Providence House facility. Estimated total cost is $400,000. The space in Providence House vacated by the existing computer lab and Child Development Center will be converted into staff offices. The current offices will then become rooms for residents, thus allowing us to provide lodging for five additional families each night. Jean Sayres, of Providence House and former board president, is heading the fundraising campaign for the building. The D. Thomason Committee of First Presbyterian Church in Shreveport made the initial commitment of $100,000 as a lead gift for the campaign. When an additional $200,000 is committed, the building phase will begin.

The first was the religious instruction of children, which was entrusted to religious organizations. The second was the education of youth. Even though children had already received basic religious instruction, it was necessary to educate them further, transmitting values such as piety, contemplation, the practice of virtue, knowledge of good and evil, respect, integrity and good manners. Instructing Children Religious teaching was the principal motive in the instruction of children. A vast network of infant schools was put in place, beginning in the towns and cities, later spreading to more remote corners of the countryside as numerous new teaching establishments were founded for both boys and girls. Educating Youth The religious awakening of Catholic authorities made them realize, at the same time, the extent to which girls had been prevented from even the most minimal education. As future mothers, girls would one day be called upon to play the role of educators to their children, inculcating the basics of the Catholic religion. However, an ignorant mother can teach her children nothing. This is why the intant schools welcomed as many girls as boys, although in separate facilities.

It's the visage of Lester Roloff, who is seen by several Missouri reform schools as a hero in the battle to bring wayward teens to Jesus, while fending off the demons of government control. Mountain Park's Web site proudly says that the school's founder was personally trained by the minister. Elsewhere in Missouri, Agape Boarding School and Thanks to Calvary say they are not Roloff schools, but their leaders praise the pastor's work and display photos of him. Agape has named one of its dorms in Roloff's honor. Roloff, who died in a plane crash in 1982, is perhaps best known for his "Family Altar" radio ministry, which was once broadcast from Corpus Christi, Texas, to more than 140 stations. As his radio ministry grew, the fundamentalist Baptist preacher began reaching out to drug-addicted men and rebellious teens. By the late 1960s, he was taking in dozens of wayward girls, most of whom were pregnant.
