Statement of Purpose
The California Livign Museum (CALM) is a zoo, botanic garden, and natural history museum dedicated to teaching a respect for all living things by exhibiting the diversity of native aniamls and plants plus the uniqueness of California in geology and paleontology. CALM was established in 1980 and opened in 1983 with a mission to teach a respect for all living things through: education, recreation, research, and conservation. CALM was envisioned and originated by local community leaders and supported for its first 15 years solely by business and individual contributors with lots of volunteer assistance. In July of 1998 CALM partnered with the Kern County Superintendent of Schools to secure its long-term operation. Community support and volunteers will always be a critical component to enhance CALM's expansion and education mission.
CALM is California's premier native zoobotanic garden, and natural history museum that displays only California natives. In a relaxed family atmosphere, you have the opportunity to come face to face with nature's wonder and beauty. Twenty minutes east of downtown Bakersfield, a trip to CALM takes you "away from the city" without a long trip.

Resumen
(Espangnol)
In response to the increasing demand for cultural heritage tourism products from the tourism market, tour operators have turned to museums, plays, festivals, theatre, dance, art, architecture and folklore. This successful coupling of tourism and heritage has resulted in a revitalized heritage conservation and promotion movement, economic development opportunities in traditionally depressed sectors and a heightened sense of cultural and community identity. To date, museums and their staff have played a central role in providing curatorial, research and public education services to this growing tourism sector. However, as in the ecotourism industry, there is a sector of the cultural heritage tourism market that seeks greater authenticity, more realistic experiences and closer contact with living cultural heritage products. Like the ecotourist who prefers spotting a wolf in the wild to seeing one in a zoo, the demanding cultural heritage tourist values authentic, living cultural heritage experiences over pre-packaged and sanitized versions. Perhaps some readers who have visited Eastern Canada in the spring may have come across a maple syrup producer on a lonely country road and stopped for a chat with him. In the Yucatan, you may be fortunate, if you travel off the beaten path, to run into a chiclero camp and witness for yourself how the campesinos obtain the latex that is used for chewing gum. Most travelers will fondly remember experiences which brought them into direct contact with the people of a place, engaged in their traditional routines.

69. Directory Of Historic House Museums And Living History Resources In The United S
Other building museums forts, mills, prisons, and living historymuseums - are also included (located under the map below).
http://www.preservationdirectory.com/housemuseums_main.html
This directory lists over 600 online historic house museums and organizations in the United States and Canada. Other "building museums" - forts, mills, prisons, and living history museums - are also included (located under the map below). Use the map below to find museums by State. Organizations in Canada are listed on one page, separated by Province (a link for Canada is just below the map). To have your organization's website listed for free, please send an email with the name or your historic house museum or living history organization and the location (City and State/Province) to the email address at the bottom of this page. Map courtesy of Click here to view organizations in Washington, DC CANADA
The decision was made to also include other historic structures that are being preserved as museums or cultural centers. These include prisons, forts, mills and other structures. Certainly not houses, the various structures are equally important to the cultural story of North America, saved to educate future generations. If you have an idea for a new category (more are in the works now, and will be added periodically as time allows) or would like your museum or center added to the directory, please email me the pertinent information at the address below.

For art treasure hunters, though, it's easily found. The museum and gallery house one of the finest collections of 17th to late 19th century oriental and European ivory. The lost civilizations of Mexico and Central and South America are portrayed by the large collection of Pre-Columbian art. Many representative pieces are on display from burial tomb effigies to everyday ceramic pieces. Porcelain and glass are represented in four unique fashions. The Tiffany Collection is stunning, especially the 10-piece Lily lamp produced in iridescent gold, circa 1900-1906. Steuben glass is represented by two eras of design: Frederick Carder glass and American glass. 18th, 19th, and 20th century Chinese objects round out the breakables with traditional dynasties and design motifs found on tea pots, serving dishes, bowls, and vases. The BNHM is unique among the major natural history museums in having a botanical garden. The UC Botanical Garden is particularly well known for its contributions to plant evolutionary biology, a topic which is of common research interest across the BNHM consortium. Because DNA is best obtained from fresh plant material, the advent of molecular systematics has revolutionized the role of botanical gardens. The UC Botanical Garden's collection is especially valuable because it is well-documented and collected from the wild. The Garden plays a major role in botanical research around the world. Distant researchers can peruse the collection list on the web and request material by email. Curation staff collect and prepare material for them, and ship that material around the globe.
