Directory Looking Backward and Forward The Deep Ecology Platform Visionaries, Friends and Colleagues ... The Way Ahead Considerable portions of each year's budget are dedicated to in-house book projects in one or more program areas and to supporting authors, journals, radio series, and advertising campaigns covering critical issues either poorly reported on or not even understood by the mainstream press. Large photo books such as Clearcut Fatal Harvest and Welfare Ranching are conceived and executed as discrete projects under the Foundation's direction. Today's publishing economy is particularly short on promotion budgets for such subjects, and often books on eco-philosophy, ecological worldviews and environmental issues are produced in small quantities. The Foundation has supported the publicity, promotion and distribution of books deemed important to its mission, especially in the area of environmental ethics and philosophy. Subsidizing advertising, book tours, and promotions can build interest and help bring a greater number of important ideas to more readers. In terms of broadcast media, the Foundation generally does not fund television, video, or film but prefers radio formats instead. A number of series and individual programs have resulted from working with independent radio producers. Radio has proven particularly good at reaching a well-educated audience interested in advancing their understanding of complex issues such as globalization, ecocentric thought, and megatechnology.

Public debate about GM animals
Concerns about potential welfare problems of genetically modified livestock, attributed to members of the Agriculture and Environment Biotechnology Commission (Daily Mail, 28 September) are already being addressed by UK scientists, according to Professor Ray Baker, Chief Executive of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). "BBSRC welcomes the idea of a constructive public debate about the potential applications of modern animal biotechnology" said Professor Baker. "We will be pleased to play a full part in such discussions and consultation, indeed we are already trying to raise public awareness about the issues." Last year, BBSRC published

LIVESTOCK SALES AND THE GST
"Sales of livestock through a sale yard or direct to the abattoir will be GST inclusive," Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Warren Truss told Cattle Agents in Toowoomba. Mr Truss’s comments follow the release by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) of a fact sheet called Livestock Sales, GST and Food which clarifies the GST treatment for all types of livestock sales. "Where the farmer sells live animals to the processor who produces meat for human consumption, the sale of the live animal will be subject to GST even though the processor’s sale of meat will be GST-free," Mr Truss said. "This means the sale to the processor is GST inclusive even if the price is worked out after the delivery of the animals and after slaughter. In this type of transaction the pricing method will have no bearing on the taxable status of the live animal. "Farmers should check their contractual arrangements with their purchaser to ensure that the sale to the abattoir is GST-inclusive.

70. SDCORN.ORG: WORKING TO PROMOTE SOUTH DAKOTA'S AG PRODUCERS

http://www.sdcorn.org/Media.cfm
Developing our Livestock Industry will mean Thousands of Jobs for Rural South Dakota
It's About Time we changed things. And a campaign has begun that will do just that. The South Dakota Corn Utilization Council has been the catalyst behind a new campaign that answers the question, "What if we just fed the corn we already have to the cattle we already have?"
To start, South Dakota would create 10,000 new jobs, predominantly in rural communities where they are needed most. If we just fed the corn we already have to the cattle we already have, agriculturally generated income in South Dakota would increase over $600 million per year. That's right, per year. Those are the startling findings of a new study done by the Business Research Bureau at USD, with help from ag experts at SDSU and other major universities in the Midwest. The study was set in motion about a year ago when the South Dakota Corn Utilization Council asked the big "what if" question about corn and cattle.
Now think about it: what other idea is on the table right now that would increase farm and ranch income so dramatically while creating10,000 new jobs for our kids? Search high and lowthere just isn't one. Those jobs? They would spread out all over our state, creating new jobs for local elevators and main street hardware stores and truck drivers and teachers and doctorsjust about every walk of life. The question many people ask is this: "If this is such a great idea, why haven't we done it before?" Three answers are obvious.

CDC, National Center for Infectious Diseases
This report summarizes an investigation of a farm family that consumed meat from a steer that had been infected with Bacillus anthracis, the bacteria that causes anthrax. The animal was slaughtered on the farm and did not enter the public meat supply. Public health authorities have recommended that the exposed family members take preventative antibiotics and begin anthrax vaccination. This case re-emphasizes that anthrax is present in the environment and can cause disease in livestock and wild animals. Veterinarians and public health officials should actively consider the possibility of anthrax when dealing with sick livestock. Vaccination of livestock against anthrax remains the safest and most effective way to prevent both animal and human disease.

Release No. IFAD/36/2001 Rome, 14 November 2001 - The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina today signed a loan agreement on highly concessional terms for financing the Livestock And Rural Finance Development Project. This IFAD-initiated project will have a total cost of USD 25.5 million. The Agreement was signed at the Fund's headquarters in Rome by the Vice President of IFAD, Mr. John Westley, and by His Excellency Dr Jadranko Prlic, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The IFAD loan is in the amount of USD 12 million. The contribution to be made by the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina will amount to USD 5.6 million and the beneficiaries of the project will provide the equivalent of USD 2.9 million. Co-financing in the amount of USD 5 million is being negotiated with the OPEC Fund. The Livestock and Rural Finance Development Project is IFAD's third operation in the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The two previous projects, the Emergency Farm Reconstruction Project- Re-Stocking Activities launched in 1996 and the Small Farm Reconstruction and Development Project launched in 1997, were designed to deal with the immediate post-war situation. They focused on livestock re-stocking through the importation of high quality cows from Western Europe and the local purchase of sheep and goats. These animals were distributed on a credit in-kind basis. These projects made an important contribution to the survival of many families in the immediate post-war recovery period.
