Beginning with the May issue, Beef Today circulation will increase from 103,000 to more than 250,000 beef producers. "This is a great fit," said Beef Today editor Steve Cornett. "For years, we've seen study after study that shows Farm Journal is the cattlemen's first choice of all agricultural magazines, so we know beef producers read the book. Now, our in-depth coverage of the beef industry will get to more than twice as many producers as before." Beef Business Journal Starting with the August issue, the new Beef Business Journal will be published nine times each year as a demographically selected section within Top Producer magazine. The new publication targets more than 23,000 of the nation's top beef producers - those with more than 500 cows, 500 stockers or 500 fed cattle. The company has plans to offer exclusive services to subscribers down the road, such as conferences, networking opportunities and business management tools customized to the beef industry.

Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - Australia REDUCING GREENHOUSE GASES IN AUSTRALIA'S LIVESTOCK INDUSTRIES
The Bureau of Rural Sciences (BRS) launched a publication today that highlights the role Australia's livestock industries can play in helping reduce our greenhouse gas emissions. Meeting the Kyoto Target. Implications for the Australian Livestock Industries details the outcomes of a two-day workshop organised by BRS. BRS Executive Director, Dr Peter O’Brien, said the publication would help inform industry, policy makers and scientists about ways our livestock industries can help Australia meet its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. "Australia's livestock sector contributes around 12 to 14 per cent of our greenhouse gas emissions," Dr O’Brien said. "This is considerably higher than most other developed nations, where the figure is around 3 to 4 per cent. "It also makes the sector Australia's third largest source of greenhouse gases after the energy and transport sectors. Unfortunately, most of the attention has traditionally been on those sectors, with a limited focus also on land clearing.

VALUE-ADDED TAX : IMPORTATION OF LIVESTOCK As from 4 January 1999 Value-Added Tax at the rate of 14 per cent will be levied on the importation of goods from Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia and Swaziland (the BLNS countries). At present the supply of livestock between registered vendors in South Africa is permitted at the zero rate. This will continue after 4 January 1999 as the South African Revenue Service is still in consultation with producers and various other stakeholders. To ensure that there is no discrimination against producers in the BLNS countries, the importation of livestock from such countries will be allowed free of VAT, provided the BLNS importer can prove to the Customs officer at the time of importation that the livestock is being supplied to a VAT registered vendor Should the permission granted to South African vendors to apply the zero rate be withdrawn, all imports of livestock will also become subject to VAT at the standard rate.

Meat and Livestock Media Releases MEDIA RELEASE 21 November 2002 Kidding rate drives gross margins for goat producers Better kidding management can deliver a 50% boost to gross margins for goatmeat enterprises, new on-farm research results have shown. The research by a group of Queensland producers was undertaken over two years with $10,000 funding provided through the Producer Initiated Research and Development (PIRD) program. South Queensland Goat Meat Producers group spokesman Tim Perrottet said the kidding rate had the most impact on the gross margin for the producers in the group during the two year trial. "The trial showed we can achieve a gross margin of $14 per DSE with a 150% kidding rate and 140% reaching the 20kg dressed weight target at sale," Mr Perrottet said. "This is significantly higher than the $7.92/DSE average across the group and the best individual enterprise gross margin of $10.78/DSE." The group trialled different mating and weaning strategies to identify their six "top tips" to increase the kidding rate.

More livestock could help farmers - study
By STEPHEN BORNAIS More cows, goats and sheep producing more manure has been suggested as a way to save the soil supporting Nova Scotians farms. A report released yesterday by GPI Atlantic, a Halifax non-profit research group, said increasing the number of livestock raised on farms in the province could add millions to incomes, and improve soil quality. Soil is eroding six times faster than it can replenish itself, the report said, with quality worsened by the loss of organic matter and the planting of more soil-degrading crops such as corn and potatoes. All this costs farmers money to repair, threatening the future of Nova Scotia farms and potentially reducing food quality, the report concluded. In the past decade, the area of land used to grow potentially soil-degrading crops has increased 30 per cent. And since 1971, numbers of livestock on crop-growing farms have dwindled.

NAT 3508-9 2000 Australian Tax Office 21 September 2001 The Tax Office has moved to clarify the interpretation of the GST-status of livestock sales, issuing a fact sheet Livestock Sales, GST and Food "The fact sheet spells out when the price of livestock sales will include GST," Tax Commissioner Michael Carmody said today. "Under the law sales of live animals will be subject to GST while meat for human consumption will be GST-free. For example, where farmers sell live animals to processors who produce meat for human consumption, the sale of the live animals will be subject to GST even though the processor's sale of the meat will be GST-free. In this type of transaction, the pricing method will have no bearing on the taxable status of the live animal. "In respect of cattle, sheep and pigs, a carcass is considered food for human consumption once an authorised person has inspected it and either stamped or passed it as food for human consumption, in accordance with Federal, State or Territory law.

Media release from Senator, the Hon Chris Ellison, Minister for Justice and Customs
Livestock theft twice the rate of residential burglary
13 August 2002 A new national survey has found that livestock theft is experienced by eight out of 100 farms, almost twice the rate of residential burglary, the Minister for Justice and Customs Senator Chris Ellison announced today. Senator Ellison was commenting after the release today of key findings from the first national survey of farm crime conducted by the Australian Institute of Criminology. "Anecdotal evidence has previously indicated that stock theft and theft of farm equipment are significant problems in rural Australia. This survey provides the first set of national estimates about the incidence and prevalence of farm crime and its cost," Senator Ellison said. "During the survey period from July 2000 to June 2001, 27 percent of farms surveyed were victims of property crime. This is almost three times the rate of property crime among Australian households and is of significant concern to the Government," Senator Ellison said.

Northern agricultural livestock update
Media release : 1 March 2002
The latest information on meat and pasture research will be the focus of the Northern Agricultural Livestock Update to be held at the Mingenew Recreation Centre on 14 March 2002. The Department of Agriculture and the Mingenew-Irwin group will host the event, which will provide producers with the latest research and development, relevant to farm businesses in the region. Development officer Emma Mitchell said it would also be an excellent opportunity for producers, researchers and industry representatives to interact. "Livestock Updates provide a unique opportunity to profile research being pursued in WA, and detail how it would ultimately benefit producers, processors, marketers and other stakeholders in the industry," said Ms Mitchell. "This research forum is timely for the region, with many livestock sectors experiencing solid improvements and the expansion of the livestock industry in the Midwest region," she said. Ms Mitchell said topics of discussion would include an overview of the markets for major meat and live export industries, as well as research profiles on everything from herd management systems to feeding supplements and feed utilisation.

National livestock identification scheme examined
Media Release : 7 June 2002
The Department of Agriculture has convened a working group comprised of meat and livestock industry representatives to assess the potential impact of a mandatory national livestock identification initiative. The Australian cattle industry and Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) developed the National Livestock Identification Scheme (NLIS) which involves permanent identification of cattle using electronic devices. Department Senior Veterinary officer Farran Dixon said the need for an efficient 'whole of life' identification system was highlighted by international outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease and Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE). He said domestic and overseas markets were also demanding assurances of food safety. "The NLIS is different to existing paper-based systems. It involves permanent identification of cattle using electronic ear tags or a permanent device containing an electronic microchip, that sits in the rumen of a cow," Mr Dixon said. "Scanners at saleyards, abattoirs and on-farm can read these devices, record individual identification, and the information can then be sent to the national database.
