Baha'i History in Lithuania click here for Baha'i History - basic background Written by Helen Smith The first Baha'i to visit Lithuania was Martha Root in the spring of 1927. She met some Esperantists at her hotel in Kaunas, but was unable to do much becauce of local circumstances. She came again to Kaunas in the summer of 1934 for the National Esperanto Conference, and again in October 1935. On these two occations she was much more succesfull and her visit resulted in articles appearing in local newspapers, as well as a mention of the Baha'i Faith in the Lithuania Encyclopedia (Kaunas 1934). Also in 1935, Matas Salcius wrote about the Baha'i Faith in his book "Sveciuose Pas 40 Tautu" ("Visiting 49 Nations"). Baha'is are recorded as living in two places prior to World War II, Radviliskis and Joniskis. The names of the first two Baha'is were Juozas Petrulis and Andrius Borkauskas. No trace of this former community remains. In the Ten Year Crusade (q.v., 1953 - 63), Lithuania was made the responsibility of the National Spiritual Assembly of Germany and Austria. In 1974, this responsibility was transferred to the Baha'is of Sweden.

Back to the first History of Lithuania First inhabitants – deer hunters – settled in the present territory of the country around 9000 AD. The ancient Baltic culture evolved from the local inhabitants and Indo-Europeans. The union of the Baltic tribes created the state of Lithuania, which name first, appeared in the German chronicle "Annales Quedlinburgenses" (Annals of Quedlinburg) in 1009. Lithuanian is one of the oldest languages in Europe. The Grand Duke Mindaugas established the first Lithuanian state in 1230. He converted to Christianity briefly and was crowned king of Lithuania in 1252. The Grand Duke Gediminas, who reigned from 1316 to 1341, is credited with founding Vilnius (1323) at the confluence of Neris and Vilnia rivers, which gained the rights of Magdeburg in 1387, and for a dynasty that united Lithuania and Poland from 1386 until 1795. Lithuania was the last European pagan country to accept Christianity and was baptised only in 1387. For this reason Teutonic and Livonian Orders put Lithuania under constant attack for the most of 200 years. Despite that the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was a strong political power in the Medieval Eastern Europe. By the end of 14th century it was one of the biggest countries in this part of the continent. Under the rule of Vytautas the Great its borders stretched as far South as the Black Sea. In 1410, Duke Vytautas the Great and his cousin Jogaila Wladyslaw II, the King of Poland, decisively beat the German crusaders of the Teutonic Order in the great battle of Tannenberg. After that the might of the Order was routed.

Ancient Lithuanians actively traded with the Romans, mostly in amber dug from mines in the eastern part of the region. In the 13th Century, the Lithuanian people were united under Grand Duke Mindaugas, a monarch whose realm eventually extended as far north as the Urals and as far south as the Black Sea.
