What is media literacy? "It is no longer enough to simply read and write. Students must also become literate in the understanding of visual images. Our children must learn how to spot a stereotype, isolate a social cliché and distinguish facts from propaganda, analysis from banter, important news from coverage." An "Enriched" Approach to Introducing Media Literacy at the Middle Level Tina DiChiara
"Brain-compatible learning is here to stay. You can bet it will effect nearly
everything we do including teaching strategies, discipline policies, the arts,
special education, curriculum, technology, bilingual programs, music,
learning environments, staff development, assessment, and even
organizational change."
Eric Jensen, Teaching with the Brain in Mind The year 2001 marks the first time the Albuquerque Public Schools has acknowledged the importance of media literacy for its students by including performance benchmarks having to do with mass communication concepts in its newly-drafted standards. My objective is to provide middle school educators with interesting approaches for teaching basic concepts in the study of mass communication. There are fruitful findings in the world of research when it comes to brain-compatible learning, and my intention is to provide some details about the basic principles of those findings and then present practical applications in the classroom using Media Literacy as an impetus. Academic Setting School Setting Garfield Middle School is located in a now-predominantly Hispanic community whose families have attended Garfield since its opening in 1950. Two-thirds of the student body qualify for free or reduced lunch and breakfast programs. Terra Nova scores are lower than the district average in most subjects. The school provides bilingual instruction, special education services (for roughly a sixth of the student population) and Title I benefits, for all of which the school receives federal and state funding.

A Question of Literacy *What is Literacy:
Explorations into the Social and Historical Meanings The very notion of literacy is being altered… to function in hypermedia, to read and design web pages and embark on computer-based projects one must orchestrate a fresh amalgam of graphic, linguistic and auditory literacies. There is every reason to believe that these literacies will continue to proliferate.
Howard Gardner. (1999). Intelligence Reframed: Multiple Intelligences for the 21st Century
In the ASCD Educational Leadership (October 1999) a definition of “full-fledged literacy” states that
“The definition of full-fledged literacy has shifted over the last century with the last century with increased distribution of technology, with the development of communication across distance and with the proliferation of large scale economic enterprises… students need to be more than literate. They must be able to read challenging material, to perform sophisticated calculations and to solve problems independently.” Marshall McLuhan talks about the creation of the ultimate technology, the phonetic alphabet. McLuhan states that the "ALPHABET" translates man from the magical world of the ear to the neutral visual world...." According to McLuhan, oral cultures act and react simultaneously but with the invention of the alphabet the result is a "detached" literate man. Literacy moved the culture of man from tribe to to "individual" units that may have an improved intellectual grasp on the world but yet is fragmented in consciousness. (McLuhan, 1995. Olson, 1994) Oral tradition depends on the rhythm of the culture and serves as a base for the culture but alphabet technology move the man from the oral man to the literate man and the electronic man is not far behind. (Olson, 1994)

This information is unprecedent in Brazil and is essential to improving the quality of education.

The objective of this project is to create an index that could quantify the number of functional illiterates in the country.
Through establishing a National Functional Literacy Index proposes to supply information to governmental and non-governmental organizations engaged in improving the quality of schooling in Brazil. This is an unprecedent initiative in the country, by which the Paulo Montenegro Institute intends to help quantify the extent of the problem and stimulate public debate about it.
In order to define the methodology to be used to establish the National Functional Literacy Index, the Institute assembled several specialists in education, Brazilians and foreigners, and, in March 2001, promoted the first International Seminar on Functional Illiteracy.
In December of the same year, the first results of the project were presented, a result of a study made in partnership with Ação Educativa, a non-governmental organization with over twenty years experience in education.

, Head of Dyslexia Unit, George Watson's College, Edinburgh, and Gavin Reid , Senior Lecturer in Special Education, University of Edinburgh Listening is a core skill within the English curriculum and the main medium for classroom learning, but it is difficult to assess objectively. The comprises linked, standardised tests of listening, reading and spelling, yielding a coherent profile of each pupil's attainments in each area, plus a powerful diagnostic analysis of how these key communicative skills are developing relative to each other. The spelling assessment probes each pupil's mastery of the fundamental units of literacy, both visual and phonological, while the reading comprehension test explores how swiftly and effectively a pupil may 'take meaning' from a text. Where performance levels on these tests vary, the discrepancy in either direction can provide unique insights into a pupil's preferred style and their strengths and weaknesses in processing written language. This spelling and reading profile can then be related to the
