Comprehension Strategies Used by
Advanced ESL Learners in Hong Kong
Ming Yee Carissa Young
National University of Singapore
Introduction
listening comprehension strategies A few empirical studies have been conducted to uncover the listening strategies used by second/foreign language learners. Murphy (1985) worked with twelve intermediate ESL university students and concluded that the high achievers used their prior knowledge ("personalizing"), made guesses ("inferring"), and monitored their comprehension ("self-describing") more often than did the low achievers. Vandergrift (1992) found that the successful French-as-a-second-language learners monitored their own listening comprehension and identified aspects which hinder comprehension twice as frequently than their unsuccessful counterparts, but the differences were not statistically tested.
Method
Subjects
The participants of this study were eighteen Chinese students enrolled in various courses at six universities in Hong Kong in the 1994/95 academic year. The criteria for sampling were that these subjects should (1) be willing to participate, (2) be enrolled in different universities, (3) be Chinese and brought up in Hong Kong, and (3) have an equal proportion of male and female students. These anonymous participants, eight males and ten females, were on average twenty-one years old and had been studying English as a second language for over fifteen years.

Using TOEFL to Improve
Listening Comprehension
Tsai Yu-Hsin

ABSTRACT
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) has for decades been used throughout the world as a standardized test for assessing English proficiency. With its high reliability and validity, this long-standing and much-revered test has a great deal to reveal to both students and teachers in the learning and teaching of English as a foreign language. Assuming a positive relations between the TOEFL test and the EFL course, this paper draws pedagogical implications of listening comprehension from the first section of the TOEFL test. Based on the classification and analyses of the most up-to-date computerized TOEFL listening comprhension test, this paper demonstrates how an EFL teacher can benefit from the TOEFL test for listening comprehension objectives, contents, activities and test designs. Also suggested are three types of curricular patterns for adopting TOEFL to teach listening comprehension.

I tried to teach myself Spanish (I didn't know any) and this book just did not work out because of its poor construction. The concepts are not clearly described and all too often I found myself asking why is this grammar like this or what is the difference between the different tenses. The examples are not very helpful either. However, I took a private introductory class and then returned to this book. Here, the book has provided some value with its vocabulary which is grouped by themes (festivals, family, etc). So the book has some value for a beginner if you are also receiving extensive instruction from another source.

Listening comprehension before and after study abroad Ginsberg, R.B. and others. ERIC Document Reproduction Service No. ED 358 718. [L,R] 1992
This study is one in a series conducted using data obtained by the American Council of Teachers of Russian Language on students who participated in their Russian language programs over a number of years. This particular study focused on listening comprehension before and after study abroad. The specific questions the study seeks to answer are what types of training and strategies for listening comprehension occurred in college Russian language classes, what materials were used, what strategies were useful, how did study abroad influence listening comprehension, how did listening comprehension relate to other skills such as reading and speaking, and lastly what other factors are related to listening comprehension abilities. Most of data for this study were obtained through pre- and post-program questionnaires administered to students who participated in the academic semester to the Soviet Union in spring 1990. A total of 82 students were included in this study. Very detailed findings are included in the report, but in general the researchers determine that: listening activities are not common in college Russian language courses, students have little confidence in their comprehension abilities, and study abroad leads to substantial gains in listening comprehension.
