Probatus Oy, a provider of systems integration solutions, has today released the Probatus Spectra Linux operating system, suitable for both workstation and server use. Probatus Spectra Linux is the most productized Linux distribution version made in Finland. It is also the first Linux distribution version to be provided with the Probatus Spectra SDK application development environment, which supports all most common operating systems.
"Spectra Linux provides a quick and easy way to transfer to using Linux. It offers an easy-to-use environment providing compatibility with other major Linux distributions and supporting a wide range of peripheral devices. Installation does not require special skills from Linux beginners, and the possibility to individually select the program modules to be installed serves the needs of experienced users," says Esa Tervo, Executive Vice President and director of technology development at Probatus.
The Probatus Spectra SDK (Software Development Kit) development environment provided with Probatus Spectra Linux enables systems developers to produce localized applications for robust data processing - simultaneously for several target environments and language areas, and without major porting costs. Besides Linux, the developed applications function in most common UNIX platforms and Microsoft Windows environments.

FAQs Introduction A Brief History of Linux The Main Differences between Linux and Other Operating Systems Why Use Linux? Distributions of Linux Considerations Before Upgrading or Migrating How to Begin the Process Summary Introduction Linux as an operating system has been in continuous development since about 1991, when Linus Torvalds began to write a UNIX-based operating system for the Intel PC environment. The original Linux kernel was very compact and had only the most basic functionality. Taking advantage of the Open Source community, which was still in its infancy, Linus released Linux to the world. A Brief History of Linux Linux was initiated as a pet project by a student named Linus Torvalds while working at a school in Helsinki. He started this pet project after working with Minix, another UNIX-like operating system that ran on an Intel-based PC. Why would anyone take on such a daunting task as rewriting an operating system? As a graduate student, the high cost of dumb terminals compared to the advantages of a basic PC as a desktop system was becoming clear. But the cost of the desktop software and the required desktop operating system kept the average student and user from being able to afford a PC with all the necessary software products. In an effort to alleviate this problem, and extend the resources of the school at which he was working, Linus decided that this redevelopment of Minix would be a worthwhile project even if it just meant the school could use some old PCs as dumb terminals to connect to the main servers.

Chinese government backs development of Linux operating system
By Mike Ingram 15 July 2000 Use this version to print An article in the New York Times July 7 reports that the Chinese government is developing a version of the open source computer operating system Linux, as a counterweight to the country's growing dependence on Microsoft Windows. Similar reports have emerged several times this year. In January, Jon Hall, Linux International executive director, said that it was government policy in China to use the operating system across all ministries. Speaking at the Linux World Asia conference, Hall said Wu Jichuan, China's Minister of Information Industries, had told him this during a visit to Beijing in July 1999. The issue has been revived by the Times Security concerns no doubt play a big part in the considerations of the Beijing regime. Last year a cryptographer for a Canadian software firm working in the US said he found a feature in Windows called an NSAKey. This heightened speculation over whether Microsoft software contains a back-door key that could be operated by the National Security Agency, which gathers intelligence for the US government from around the world. Though Microsoft said the key was innocuous and no evidence has been found of its use, the discovery has left many in China and elsewhere suspicious.

Syslinux - Boot loader for the Linux operating system.
Updated by FastRunner on Thursday, February 13th 2003. SYSLINUX is a boot loader for the Linux operating system which operates off MS-DOS floppies. It is intended to simplify first-time installation of Linux, rescue disks, and other uses for boot floppies. A SYSLINUX floppy can be manipulated using standard MS-DOS (or any other OS that can access an MS-DOS filesystem) tools once it has been created; and requires only a ~ 9K DOS program or ~ 19K Linux program to create in the first place. Starting with version 1.46 it also includes PXELINUX, a program to boot off a network server using a boot PROM compatible with the Intel PXE (Pre-Execution Environment) specification. Starting with version 1.60 it also includes ISOLINUX, a program to boot off an ISO 9660 in native no-emulation mode. Starting with version 1.65, it additionally includes MEMDISK, a tool to boot legacy operating systems from nontraditional media like PXE or CD-ROM. The Linux Operating System
    for Webmasters
Are you thinking of trying the Linux operating system? Or, to ask a better question, should you try the Linux operating system? We'll look at this question from several viewpoints, including stability, availability of software, development environment, security, support, and, oh, yes - cost. These are all factors you should consider before purchasing any software. If you're new to Linux and are looking for support groups and forums, here are some good places to start: "Where the Linux Community Meets" http://www.justlinux.com Even if you're not the techie type, you should at least have an idea as to what everyone has been talking about the past few years. Many businesses, large and small, are switching to Linux these days, or at least installing it on some of their servers, web servers or workstations as a "second" operating system. Monster corporations like IBM and Dell are adding it gratis to their PCs, and many small businesses are thinking about Linux as well. It's the purpose of this section to explore problems of administration, and configuring of Linux, and, as always, we welcome your feedback.

    Friday August 3, 2001
One of the world's largest computer manufacturers, Dell, has stopped producing desktop PCs and laptops pre-installed with alternative operating system Linux, leaving fans of the open source system wondering if anyone can challenge the supremacy of Windows. Dell embraced Linux last year, agreeing to sell a range of products for the consumer market featuring open source software in place of the usual Microsoft fare. However stagnant sales have forced Dell to abandon the project.

linux operating system Presentation – March 21/98. By Lane, VE7IHL. Linux is aUnixlike operating system that runs on most 386, 486 and Pentium based PCs.
    http://www.rainbowcountry.bc.ca/vapo/seminar/Linux_OS.htm
By Lane, VE7IHL What is Linux? Linux is a Unix-like operating system that runs on most 386, 486 and Pentium based PCs. It is a complete operating system. It can boot up by itself with no help from DOS or Ms-Windows. Linux itself is the OS kernel, or "core" of the operating system. Most people use the term "Linux" to mean all the software that goes along with the kernel to make a usable OS. Many companies, organizations, and individuals have packaged Linux with other software to create "distributions" of Linux. Linux is both Multi-User and Multi-Tasking . This means it can support more than one user at a time, AND run more than one program at a time. Why is Linux Important to Ham Packet Operators?
    • Linux is the only operating system in the world that has Native support for Packet Radio. (AX.25 Protocols) supports normal ax.25 (i.e. normal packet radio) supports Internal DRSI type PC cards (85C30 type radio interface cards) supports a NetRom (clone) node (also supports BPQ over Ethernet) supports Rose protocol can run multiple packet radio programs sharing the same radio ports can link multiple ax.25 packet radio programs together via software (no serial ports needed)
