Linux Operating System Now Available for Set-Top Box Integrated Controllers
by Lily Wen and Robert Pittman
    Introduction
based, single-chip set-top box (STB) integrated controller, STB03400. The MontaVista operating system and cross development tools for embedded applications are based on Linux Version 2.4. This port facilitates manufacturers' development of set-top boxes and other new home gateway products to bring interactive television applications from service providers to consumers. This is another example of IBM's support for Linux and its ability to scale from enterprise servers to pervasive consumer devices. It also demonstrates the true scalability of PowerPC. Customers now have the opportunity to choose an architecture that can cover their entire product line and protect their software investment. In addition, common function across product lines can be easily leveraged to take advantage of rapidly evolving convergence opportunities and accelerate time to market. IBM's highly-integrated STB034xx chip family includes an MPEG-2 audio/video decoder, a memory interface subsystem and a range of peripheral interfaces all on a single piece of silicon (see Fig.1). Based on the PowerPC processor, it features high-speed operation at 162 MHz, with a 16-KB instruction cache and an 8-KB data cache, providing the performance necessary for a range of new services. The chips were introduced in 2000 and are currently in high-volume production.

    Multi-Tech Support for Linux
Linux is a free Unix-type operating system originally created by Linus Torvalds with the assistance of developers around the world. Developed under the GNU General Public License, the source code for Linux is freely available to everyone. There are many different Linux distributions , or versions. A "distribution" is the compiled Linux source code, usually combined with extra features and software. Multi-Tech maintains an ongoing relationship with various Linux distributors to ensure that our products are compatible with each new release of their distributions of Linux. While some of our products are operating system-independent, others require device drivers for system recognition or enhanced performance. The various distributions of Linux are based on enhancements to the free-source kernel, so we base our compatibility lists on the kernels currently in use. Multi-Tech provides products that work with the generic Linux Kernel 2.0.x

Linux as an Embedded Operating System
by Jerry Epplin Does Linux have potential as an embedded operating system? Should vendors of high-end commercial RTOSs quake in their Bruno Maglis? This article assesses Linux's features, robustness, limitations, and most importantly, its real-time facilities. The advantages of using PC hardware in embedded systems are by now well known. In contrast to much hardware developed specifically for the embedded market, PC hardware is mass-produced, easily available, and cheap. You can expect interface boards such as analog and digital I/O boards, network interfaces, and image acquisition and processing boards to cost more than twice as much when designed for the VME bus as for one of the PC buses. And with the increasing use of the higher-performance PCI bus, throughput no longer suffers when a PC platform is used.

Dual Booting Linux and Windows Posted by: LearningLinux :: news - LearningLinux on Sunday, March 23 @ 00:05:00 CST Hi, My name is Bernard Tyers, and I have been using Linux for about 2/3 years. I still consider myself as a newbie. I am a electronics student in Waterford Institute of Tech. I wrote this for my own need really. I wanted to have something that I could use as a question answerer. If it is useful, you use it. If you want to add/change anything, you can. Just let me know first, and make sure those involved get a mention.
