Exhibit Commemorates 150th Anniversary of Lincoln Patent SPRINGFIELD, IL, February 11 An exhibit that opens on Abraham Lincoln's Birthday commemorates another milestone relating to his life - the 150th anniversary of our 16th President receiving a U.S. Patent. "Lincoln and the United States Patent Office: 150 Years Later" opens Friday, February 12 in the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in downtown Springfield. The exhibit, co-curated by State Historian Thomas Schwartz and Lincoln Curator Kim M. Bauer, features items relating to patents secured by Lincoln and his contemporaries. Lincoln is the only U.S. President to ever hold a patent. An original working model of Lincoln's invention, which had to be submitted with his patent application, is part of the exhibit. The scale model, on loan from the Smithsonian Institution, shows Lincoln's buoyancy device for vessels that was intended to help boats get over shallow areas in rivers. The U.S. Patent Office required such models with most patent applications until 1880. Like most patent holders, Lincoln never saw his device used and never made any money from his 1849 patent. Patent models from other Illinois inventors submitted during the 1850s and 1860s are also included. Design patents for Abraham Lincoln life masks from sculptors Leonard Welles Volk and Clark Mills are on display. Design patent applications did not require accompanying models. Volk and Mills produced the life masks for which they secured the patents.

Still Picture Branch - College Park, Maryland On 22 September 1862, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Emancipation Proclamation at Antietam Battlefield following the Battle of Antietam on 17 September 1862. This battle, also called Sharpsburg, was the bloodiest one-day battle of the Civil War. The Union Army suffered about 12,410 casualties while Confederate forces sustained about 13,724. The Union’s fatalities numbered about 2108 while the Confederacy had at least 2700 troops killed in battle. The heavy loss of troops forced Confederate General Robert E. Lee to retreat to Virginia thereby allowing the Union a meager claim of victory. It is widely believed that had commanding Union General George B. McClellan pursued Lee, Union forces could have destroyed Lee’s Army. McClellan had established a pattern of inaction before this and President Lincoln relived McClellan of his command after this battle.

    Abraham Lincoln
16th President of the United States I leave you, hoping that the lamp of liberty
will burn in your bosoms until there shall no longer
be a doubt that all men are created free and equal.
    Abraham Lincoln
was born on February 12, 1809 in a log cabin in Hardin County (now LaRue County), Kentucky. He rose from humble origins and less than a year of formal education to become the 16th President of the United States, and one of the great men of American history. Lincoln is credited with saving the Union from disintegration and eliminating slavery in America. Lincoln was elected President on November 6, 1860. He lead the United States through the nation's greatest crisis, the Civil War (1861-1865). He was a master politician, leading by persuasion and humor. The war's end was in sight on March 4, 1865 when Lincoln took his second oath of office as President. In his inaugural address he urged merciful treatment for the defeated rebel states. As Lincoln began his second term he worked tirelessly for the speedy "reconstruction" of the war-torn nation. On the evening of April 14, 1865 Lincoln was assasinated as he watched a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. He was the first American President to be assasinated. Thousands of mourners lined the tracks as his funeral train moved him from Washington to his final resting place in Springfield, Illinois.

    ABRAHAM LINCOLN QUOTES
"If I were to try to read, much less answer, all the attacks made on me, this shop might as well be closed for any other business. I do the very best I know how - the very best I can; and I mean to keep doing so until the end. If the end brings me out all right, what's said against me won't amount to anything. If the end brings me out wrong, ten angels swearing I was right would make no difference." The Inner Life of Abraham Lincoln: Six Months at the White House by Francis B. Carpenter (University of Nebraska Press, Lincoln, Nebraska, 1995), pp. 258-259.
"Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it." The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume III, "Letter To Henry L. Pierce and Others" (April 6, 1859), p. 376. "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy." The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln edited by Roy P. Basler, Volume II, (August 1, 1858?), p. 532.

Mary Todd Lincoln As a girlhood companion remembered her, Mary Todd was vivacious and impulsive, with an interesting personalitybut "she now and then could not restrain a witty, sarcastic speech that cut deeper than she intended...." A young lawyer summed her up in 1840: "the very creature of excitement." All of these attributes marked her life, bringing her both happiness and tragedy. Daughter of Eliza Parker and Robert Smith Todd, pioneer settlers of Kentucky, Mary lost her mother before the age of seven. Her father remarried; and Mary remembered her childhood as "desolate" although she belonged to the aristocracy of Lexington, with high-spirited social life and a sound private education.
