The United States Lighthouse Society
The United States Lighthouse Society is a non-profit historical and educational organization incorporated to educate, inform and entertain those who are interested in America's lighthouses, past and present.
Modern technology has doomed the classic lighthouse. The Coast Guard, in it's role as custodian, has automated all of the light stations in this country and, in the process, has eliminated the need for operating personnel. Sterile, rotating aero-beacons on monopoles have replaced many of those proud coastline ladies of former years with their sweeping towers of brick and Victorian gingerbread.
In selected cases, the Coast guard is licensing some formerly manned and now discontinued light stations to qualified groups. Many of the light stations that were considered as no longer functional have been transfer to various states, counties, or to non-profit groups and are now serving as museums, bed-and-breakfast inns or youth hostels.
Although the almost 300-year era of manned light stations in this country has come to an close, those remaining symbols of our maritime heritage can, and should be, preserved for the enjoyment of future generations. With this in mind, the U.S. Lighthouse Society was founded to assist in the restoration and preservation of America's lighthouses and help qualified local groups in their efforts to return the nation's lighthouses to the public domain.

These unique icons of maritime history have guided mariners for more than 100 years along this dangerous stretch of the Pacific Coast. These historic structures still stand over some of the coast's most dangerous waters.
It's a recipe for disaster. A treacherous rocky coastline with rugged headlands, wild storm-tossed seas, torrents of unrelenting rain and thick fog loom. The waters of the Northwest coast and especially those at the mouth of the Columbia River have claimed hundreds of ships and thousands of lives. Before the days of modern satellite global positioning systems, this nation's maritime safety relied on lighthouses. Lighthouses were an early priority for our young country to improve maritime safety and facilitate shipping and commerce. In 1789, one of Congress' first official acts under its new constitution was the creation of a board to plan and erect lighthouses. Lighthouses were constructed to warn mariners of dangerous headlands and provide landmarks to guide ships safely along the coast and into port, even under difficult weather conditions.

OREGON COASTAL TOWNS ON PACIFIC COAST HIWAY
    Shakespear Festival and Beaches:
Pacific Coast Hiway 101 will lead you to the Pacific rain forest country. Along the coastal towns there are list of places to visit such as: The Yaquina Head Lighthouse near Newport along the Oregon coast features tours. Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach is in the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and is home to gulls and puffins. One of the many lovely spots. Sightseeing:
If you love nature and natural beauty environment, you will like the Pacific scenery in Oregon better than anywhere else on the West Coast. In the fog and rain, it is blissfully gorgeous. Whenever the sun does shine of course, makes it even better. The only place on earth with comparable sea stacks is the southcoast of Australia.
Some of the most spectacular -and popular- vista spots are along the coast between Lincoln City and Florence, and the scenery is spectacular from 50 miles or so going north from California. Probably the best view on the whole coast is at the Cape Perpetu, a Scenic Area just south of the Yachats. The view takes in 150 miles of coastline. Good restaurants:

Restaurants and bars or pubs in Oregon is right up there with California, especially in Pacific Rim and West Coast nouveau cuisine. The growing excellence of the state's wineries, coupled with abundant supply of oceanic catches, means a chance to eat well while staring at all those gorgeous sea stacks.

North Head, the more accessible and visited of our two lighthouses, is less than a 10-minute walk from the car parking area at the end of North Head Road. Tours are conducted daily during summer months and on weekends in the off-season. Cost is $1 per person. For information, call (360) 642-3078. The lighthouse is also available to rent for special occasions, such as weddings and reunions, as is the nearby old lighthouse keeper's house. In times before lighthouses, ships bound for Åstoria had "crude at best" help navigating their way through dangerous waters to where the gaping mouth of the Columbia River meets the sea. A sailing ship, bound for Astoria, is due within a day or two. Even now, far out in the Pacific, it turns eastward for the mouth of the Columbia River. Once across the dangerous bar, they secure their tiny craft and hike to the rugged heights of Cape Disappointment 12 miles to the west. Several hours later the weary men mount the final steep hill and stand on the cliffs overlooking the sea. One pulls a spyglass from his coat pocket and scans the horizon. Others rifle their packs for large white flags and begin tying them to the limbs of nearby trees, stepping back as the cotton cloths unfurl and begin snapping in the brisk wind. Still others begin gathering dry wood, adding ancient gnarled limbs to the remnants of long-dead signal fires. Later, at dusk, they will be lit, their leaping flames licking at the shadows of the dark Cape Disappointment forest.

The Lighthouses of Martha's Vineyard There are five lighthouses on Martha's Vineyardthe Gay Head Lighthouse in Aquinnah, the West Chop Lighthouse in Vineyard Haven, the East Chop lighthouse in Oak Bluffs, the Edgartown Lighthouse at Edgartown Harbor, and the Cape Pogue lighthouse on Chappaquiddick. While they are not regularly open for tours, all of them except the Cape Pogue lighthouse are accessible by road. The first welcome beacon seen by ferry-bound visitors to the Vineyard is the West Chop Light, one of the five historic lighthouses which are sentinels of the waters of the Island. The West Chop Light stands tall above the tree line with its light-keeper house. It was built in 1891 out of brick, replacing one threatened by encroaching erosion. At the start of the century, its beacon guided ships enroute to Boston by way of Vineyard Sound. Today the light offers a safe guide to the thousands of recreational boaters who visit Vineyard waters each year. The West Chop Light stands as a matriarch to the Vineyard's other lighthouses. At the turn of the century hundreds of steamers and schooners passed off West Chop. Its lamp was kept bright by Vineyard whale oil. In the words of one Vineyard writer: "Historically, aesthetically, and economically, the harbor light stands as a sort of guardian and overlord of may values accumulated in centuries of rich tradition."

The Yaquina Head lighthouse just north of Newport, Ore., is awash in early morning light as the sun reflects brilliantly off its upper glass panels. The lighthouse is Oregon's tallest at 93 feet and still operates, casting a beam 19 miles out to sea. It was built in 1872 at a cost of $96,000. Light vacation Many lighthouses along Oregon coast open for touring RON COWAN, GANNETT NEWS SERVICE The Pacific Ocean may look placid and benign to modern coast visitors, but navigators of the 19th century had reason to dread the waters off Oregon. More than a few ships were victims of the treacherous rocks and currents off the coast before the arrival of modern technology and technology's predecessor, the coastal lighthouses. Oregon has nine surviving lighthouses, established by the former U.S. Lighthouse Board between 1870 and 1896 with design and construction provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The sometimes imposing, often picturesque beacons were built on prominent headlands or near major estuaries. One, Tillamook Rock, was built on a basalt rock islet 1.2 miles offshore.
