    The Gingerbread House
The "Savannah Gingerbread" was built in the Steamboat Gothic Style in 1899 by merchant, Cord Asendorf. Asendorf designed all of the gingerbread spindles and bric-a-brac himself to "outgingerbread" everyone else in town. His daughter lived in the house until it was sold in the early 1970's then she protested when the new owners altered the color scheme from a subtle white to multicolored. She insisted that the house had always been white, though there are turn of the century photographs which suggest otherwise.

They moved to Savannah, where he established the headquarters for Churchill Steamship Lines. They acquired this house in the 1890s for their winter residence. Some of the architectural features of the house were symbolic of a sea captain's home during the early part of the 20th century. These details include the braided rope design around the exterior front door and the rope ship-rail balustrade of the veranda. After the passing of both of the Churchills in the 1920s, the house was sold and operated first as a boarding house and later converted to an apartment house. In 1984, a group of investors purchased the house and renovated it into the Forsyth Park Inn.

It's a testament to the craftsmanship of their construction that so many lighthouses survive today, after years of fighting the awe-inspiring force of the sea. Each one that remains tells its own fascinating tale of bygone seafarers and the dangers they faced. As you plan your next vacation, remember to discover New Jersey's lighthouses. Those open to the public are located in some of the most beautiful and adventurous settings you'll ever visit. Put them on your travel intermediary and you'll agree....New Jersey's lighthouses are still a Must-See!! What is a lighthouse anyway? A lighthouse is a building, on or near the shore that exhibits a light high enough above the water to mark hazards, the entrances to harbors and shipping channels. Each lighthouse is distinguished by a unique signal, indicating the structure's identity and location along the coast. Before modern navigational equipment, mariners needed this signal information to navigate in the dark of night. Yet lighthouses also aided mariners by day their painted characteristic stripes and colors serving as seamarks (also known as Daymarks). In areas where fog posed a frequent problem, lighthouses were equipped with devices such as horns, whistles and bells. Offshore where it was not feasible to build such sentinels, lightships were anchored to mark an approach to land or an obstruction. These vessels displayed a light from either a mast or an onboard tower.

    Beaches to Love
By Stephen Regenold (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 4-29-01)
Turquoise water laps at our toes as we gaze down the shoreline. The white sand beach curves gradually to a point and fades out of sight where blue water and sky meet. With the warm August sun and slight breeze, we settle into our first full day in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Tara and I are on day two of a honeymoon roadtrip that will take us from Minneapolis, up through Canada and eventually back south to the East Coast. This beach, located halfway between the U.P. towns of Escanaba and St. Ignace on Lake Michigan's north shore, feels like a misplaced oasis, somehow lost here above the 46th parallel. The coastline is gorgeous and ocean-like, possessing miles of immaculate beach, rolling sand dunes and warm, clear-blue water. Pine and birch take the place of palm, but the beach houses, marinas, and faux-tropical shops and restaurants give this region a feel unique to the Midwest. Last night we arrived in Escanaba after a long drive across the state of Wisconsin. Our wonderful but hectic wedding day, combined with the seven-hour drive on winding two-lane blacktop, created a tension that cumulated throughout the first day of the vacation. With the initial lake breezes, I felt a true release and a realization that our big trip was finally under way.

Texas' coast has as fascinating a history as that other state. Florida might have had a few more shipwrecks, but why would anyone brag about what bad sailors they were? Besides, we used to have our own Navy and actually hired our ships and sailors out to Yucatan to protect them from Mexican ships. Can Florida say that?
