Lighthouses Visited in the 1999 ILLW
W2L (K2JXW) Operated from Thimble Shoals Light, VA (USA)
Each of the photos below was taken with a Sony Mavica digital camera, which saves to a 3.5-inch floppy disk. Fortunately the seas, as you can tell from the photos, were very calm; and we were able to obtain several excellent, detailed shots of the various lighthouses that we passed on our way south down the Chesapeake Bay to our final destination at Thimble Shoals, about 4 miles off the Virginia coast at Norfolk and Hampton Roads, VA. We tried a few contacts at each of the lighthouses shown below, all of which qualify for the Chesapeake Bay Lighthouse Award. (I don't think anyone worked the required five lighthouses, however.)
Once we reached our destination at the lower end of the Bay, we went on the air as W2L, a special event lighthouse station authorized by the FCC for this occasion. In the two days, we contacted 612 stations, mostly on 40 meters, including several lighthouses and even one submarine! Our rig was an Icom 706-MK2, with an Icom 740 as a backup. The antenna was a 23-ft helically wound marine mobile whip. Our power was 100 watts, and the rigs ran off the 12 VDC available to us. Fortunately, seas were calm and we managed several hours of operation each day. In the evening, we relaxed at Salt Ponds Marina in Hampton, VA, and enjoyed their swimming pool and hospitality so much so that we extended our stay a few days beyond the Lighthouse Weekend.
In the end, reluctantly, we headed back up the Chesapeake Bay in our 30-ft "Sandy Claws" — and none too soon either, as thunderstorms plagued us daily and Hurricane Dennis was gathering on the horizon. We stopped at Windmill Point Marina on Windmill Point (where else?) and then Zahnisers Marina in Solomons, MD, and North Point Marina in Rock Hall. From Rock Hall we made the trip to our home port in South Jersey, near Philadelphia, in record time — 4 hours — the wind, the tide, and Neptune were with us.

The area has many lighthouses, four of which are convenient to the Home Port Inn:
West Quoddy Head Light
Located south of Lubec village and next to Quoddy Head State Park, this red and white striped light is one of the most photographed along the Maine coast. From here you can view Grand Manan and Long Eddy Light on the large cliff-rimmed Canadian island at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. Whales are frequently seen offshore during summer months. Also, just off shore is tiny "Sail Rock," the easternmost firmament in the United States. A trail leads from the lighthouse to adjacent Quoddy Head State Park, where there are several nice picnic spots and additional rugged trails. Note: This spot is the closest location in the United States to Africa!
Lubec Channel Light ("The Sparkplug")
This light is accessible only by boat, although it can be easily viewed when crossing the Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Bridge (to the right when crossing over to Campobello Island), from Stockford Park south of the bridge, downtown, and from South Lubec Road, which leads to West Quoddy Head. The light is near the edge of

INTRODUCTION AND

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In the School of Light, we do not use the word, "light" in any
occult sense to suggest an invisible force known only
to elites, but strictly in a metaphorical sense
which uses real light, such as light
from the sun or a light bulb or
lighthouse beacon as an analogy. Light is light. We need light to be able to see, unless we are blind, and those of us who are blind depend upon the rest of us having eyes to see. The problem is that most of us have been led to believe that there is a different kind of light and a different kind of perception other than the perception that is made possible for our eyes by sunlight or a lamp. It is a trance that has blinded society. The School of Light (SOL) is dedicated to helping people regain their perception through appreciation of real light as opposed to an imagined light spoken of by all of the many cults and ideologies that are competing on the battlefield of the mind concept. It is devoted to education about real light rather than indoctrination about an imagined light that cannot be seen with the eyes. We do not look for hidden meanings in light because everything we need to know is clearly illuminated by real light for those with their eyes wide open.

The First International Lighthouse Conference (Kathy Brown of the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society talks to Wayne Wheeler of the US Lighthouse Society at the conference exhibition. Photo: Ken Trethewey) The First International Lighthouse Conference took place at the White Point Beach Resort, Nova Scotia, from Monday May 29, 2000 to Friday June 2, 2000. Over 100 delegates from Canada, USA, UK and Australia attended the conference, which was agreed by all to be a great success. The event was hosted by the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society and the Atlantic Lighthouse Council, and the main focus was on the preservation of lighthouses. Presentations included
  • economic, social and cultural impact of lighthouses in the local community accounts of successful lighthouse preservation projects in several countries summaries of the present state of lighthouse structures and identification of current endangered structures advice from consultants about best practice in lighthouse preservation descriptions of current Canadian governement policies on lighthouse preservation anecdotes and other first-hand accounts of life in lighthouses
Besides the formal presentations, there were visits to the lighthouses at Fort Point, Port Medway, Medway Point and Coffin Island. There was also a very successful exhibition with various Societies and artists displaying aspects of their work. All this was supported by a delightful social programme. A lobster dinner in the beach bar area of the hotel was followed by an enchanting presentation from Chris Mills on life as a keeper in Canadian lighthouses. It could so easily have been a dark and smokey Chicago jazz club, but instead it was sixty lighthouse nutters squashed into the basement bar to watch a lighthouse slide-show. Fabulous stuff! Not surprisingly, by the end of the week, many new friendships and working relationships had been formed.

Australian Lighthouses
WELCOME Australia is an island continent with an area of 7,682,300 square kilometers, or around 5.7% of the land surface of the earth. The coastline, which is 36,735 kilometers or 22,041 miles long, is home to over 350 'lighthouses' which have been erected over the past 200 years. This is not a large number of lights for such a long coastline but then a large proportion of it is unpopulated and rarely visited by shipping. As is the case in most countries, there are no longer any manned lighthouses in Australia. The last was Maatsuyker Island in Tasmania and it was de-manned in December 1995. Most lighthouses now belong to the various State Parks and Wildlife Services. Some are still operational with a caretaker who makes weather reports and maintains the property. Others are open for rental purposes and others have just been sadly left to decay and be demolished by vandals. The site also contains lighthouse oriented amateur radio information which used to be on my other web site vk2ce.com such as the International Lighthouse/Lightship annual weekend event. Before I go any further, if you are interested in Australian Lighthouses you should consider buying John Ibbotson's wonderful book, "Lighthouses of Australia, Images from the end of an Era. Nuclear lighthouses to be replaced Lighthouses powered by a strong radiation (RTG) are located in remote areas along the Russian Arctic coast. Photo: Thomas Nilsen Thomas Nilsen Exactly ten years ago Bellona reported the whereabouts of 132 nuclear-powered lighthouses situated along the north coast in Russia. The closest one was just a few dozen meters from the Norwegian border. Since 1993 Bellona has warned of the possible radioactive leaks into the environment and the threat of theft of the radioactive strontium-90 in the unguarded and distantly situated lighthouses. The lighthouses are located in the area without available electricity sources. They are powered by so-called radio thermoelectric generators, or RTGs, in which the strong strontium source of energy produces heat to power a generator. The generator finally produces electricity to power the lamp in the lighthouse. Strontium-90 is a waste product generated in a nuclear reactor. The USSR had access to this product thanks to the large reprocessing facilities in Siberia. Similar power sources were used in distant radars, weather stations and satellites since the mid-1960s.

6.5. The Hydrographic Service and the Lighthouses Service of the Navy
THE HYDROGRAPHIC SERVICE
The mission of the Hydrographic Service of the Navy is the detailed collection of data and information concerning the Greek Sea area and their exploitation for the purpose of providing the navigators with continuous and quality information and of covering the operational requirements of the Navy. It also gives its opinion and participates as technical advisor to committees for the definition of the boundaries of the coastal area and on coastal works. The Hydrographic Service in order to fulfill its mission becomes active in the fields of hydrography, mapping, oceanography, navigational safety and nautical studies, employing the most advanced methods and monitoring systematically the technological developments in the areas of its interest. It owns three hydrographic-oceanographic ships equipped with modern data gathering and processing systems and manned with highly trained scientific and technical personnel. The main activities of the Hydrographic Service in 1998 were the following:
  • In the field of hydrographic 55 hydrographic jobs were carried out for the collection of data and information. In these the sips were employed for a total of 439 workdays and the independent teams for a total of 191 workdays.

Objective 5 IT Lighthouses in Denmark
Two IT lighthouses are to be estab-lished in Denmark, one in Northern Jutland and one in Ørestaden, to promote, from different perspectives, IT development and IT use in the network society.
Two IT Lighthouses
In many places in the world, for example the USA, Sweden, Finland and Ireland, very strong IT lighthouses have been estab-lished. These are IT growth areas which have arisen as a result of solid, focused initiatives and investments. The IT lighthouses act as magnets to high-tech enterprises, financial investors, entrepreneurs, researchers and students who interact dynamically with a high level of competition. They are recognised as being the financial and scientific cornerstones of the network society. Like lighthouses they light up and can show the way forward for the development of IT. Oulu Technopolis, in the north of Finland, is a good example of the fact that IT lighthouses do not have to be close to the heart of a city. For Oulu and for other growth areas it is important that there is a physical concentration of enterprises, research and education institutions and other innovative environments. Moreover, in spite of the effortless cross-border communication, there must be a good physical infrastructure. It must be easy to get to and from the very north of Finland. Both economically and in terms of employment, it is important for Denmark to create IT lighthouses which are attractive in both a Danish and an international context as soon as possible and in line with other leading IT nations.
