Liechtenstein: a diversified and innovative business location
Ladies and Gentlemen, It is a great pleasure to me to be able to speak to you on this Information Day in Vaduz for the diplomatic representatives accredited in Liechtenstein. In the next few minutes, I will give you a short overview of the structure of the Liechtenstein national economy and of Liechtenstein as a business location. What I would like to do in particular is try to show you that the standard image of Liechtenstein maintained abroad - which often reduces Liechtenstein economy to a pure location for financial services - is not correct in that form. Liechtenstein as a whole has an extremely successful and diversified national economy. I would like to characterise the Liechtenstein economy by three key features: many small- and medium-size enterprises; strong, diversified, export-oriented industry; and innovative products. I would like to tell you a few general facts about Liechtenstein first. In Liechtenstein, 33'000 people live on an area of 61 square miles. Liechtenstein is located right in the middle of in the Alps in the heart of Europe, embedded between Switzerland to the west and Austria to the east. The Principality of Liechtenstein has been a sovereign state since 1806. It demonstrates its sovereignty but also its solidarity with the international community by its membership in a number of international organisations.

    INTRODUCTION
Background: The Principality of Liechtenstein was established within the Holy Roman Empire in 1719; it became a sovereign state in 1806. Until the end of World War I, it was closely tied to Austria, but the economic devastation caused by that conflict forced Liechtenstein to conclude a customs and monetary union with Switzerland. Since World War II (in which Liechtenstein remained neutral) the country's low taxes have spurred outstanding economic growth.
