Lichens are greyish-green plants that grow on rocks, stones, soil, trees and bushes. It is two plants (algae; fungus) in one. There are four kinds: 1 . Encrusting Lichen If the Lichen forms a greyish-green or orange crust. (seen on fallen branch or right after oak tree) 2. Leafy Lichen If the lichen is flat or leaf-like. (opposite on the left) 3. Cup Lichen If the lichen is covered with fruiting bodies that look like stems or funnel-shaped cups. 4. Branching Lichen If the lichen is branched.
Lichens can grow where other plants would die, because the algae parts of the plant produce the food and the fungus part soaks up water from rainfall. Many lichens can be used to make dyes. Lichens are slow growing and care should be taken not to damage them. Where present, they are indicators of the absence of air pollution.

    Antarctic Lichens: 10 Facts
Buellia frigida (black) and lichen encrusted moss amongst boulders, Granite Harbour, Southern Victoria Land
Photograph by Rod Seppelt A lichen is a plant formed from the symbiotic association of certain fungi and (usually) green algae. Lichens with associated cyanobacteria are also known. Lichens occupy many different habitats, often in extreme environments. Three main types of lichens exist in Antarctica. Crustose lichens, which form a thin crust on the surface of the substrate they grow on; foliose lichens, which form leaf like lobes; and fruticose lichens which have a shrubby growth habit. Lichens have very slow growth rates. In the most favourable of conditions in the Maritime Antarctic , growth rates reach 1 cm or more per 100 years. In the harsher environment of the

Lichens Are Surprisingly Precise Air Quality Monitors, BYU Father-Son Team Finds
PROVO, Utah Lichens, combinations of fungi and algae, are quietly trodden underfoot by animals and hikers the world over. Now a new study by a Brigham Young University father-son team has demonstrated that lichens could replace expensive environmental monitors since they accumulate some pollutants in concentrations that correctly manifest the amount of the pollutants in the surrounding air. "Previously, we knew that lichens took things up from the air, but no one had any significant results indicating that what is in the lichen accurately reflects what is in the air," said Larry St. Clair, the chair of BYU's department of integrative biology and co-author of the study published in the latest issue of Atmospheric Environment. "This is the first definitive data that shows not only do lichens take pollution up from the air, but they take it up in patterns that exactly reflect the amount of pollutants in the air." Lacking roots, stems and leaves, lichens can grow almost anywhere, but rely on nutrients they accumulate from the air. Thus, they are uniquely sensitive to air pollution, making them valuable as early warning indicators of reduced air quality. Scientists have used them as biomonitors for decades, including an effort to estimate the amount of nuclear fallout from the Chernobyl melt down in the late 1980s.

This page has been set up primarily as a means of sharing my photographs from the course run on lichen identification, run by Brian and Sandy Coppins (based at Kindrogan, Perthshire, Scotland, April 2002). I intend to keep it as a teaching resource, illustrating lichen diversity, and maybe I shall add other pictures in time. The exercise may even help me learn a few of them! This is simply a collection of images, though I shall add some of them to our BIODIVERSITY REFERENCE resource, where there will be some added text and perhaps a few photomicrographs. Most of the photographs were taken with a digital camera, but with it usually wobbling on the end of a monopod with little depth of field in limited light; the definition isn't that good in some of them. A few I'm pleased with, though. If the server is slow (commonly the case on weekday afternoons), come back at another time.

A lichen is a symbiotic organism, composed of a fungus and an algae (sometimes also a cyanobacterium) living together in a single composite body, known as a thallus . In general, the fungal symbiont provides structure and anchorage for the thallus , while the other bionts busy themselves with photosynthesizing food. The official definition of a lichen (approved by the International Association of Lichenology) is "A lichen is an association of a fungus and a photosynthetic symbiont resulting in a stable thallus of specific structure."

It consists of a fungal “partner”, or mycobiont , and one or more photosynthetic partners or photobionts , which can be either green algae or cyanobacteria. The photobiont (s) used to be called the phycobiont ; but as that refers specifically to algae, leaving the cyanobacteria out in the cold, it is no longer considered appropriate. Also, I must say that it was only recently that everyone accepted that cyanobacteria are more closely related to bacteria than to algae, so the terminology change was held up for that reason also. Researchers are also starting to realize that

    http://www.namibweb.com/lichens.htm
Lichens Lichens are symbiotic relationship between fungus and algae.
Fungus: dominant partner (lichen classified as fungus); provides stability and support; catches water in the form of rain, moisture (even from unsaturated air), fog; minerals dissolved in water; prevents algae from drying out.
Algae: carries out photosynthesis and produces different sugar types used by fungus; food and energy supply to fungus; several hundred species (mostly endemic in an area they occur); colours: green, orange, grey, brown to black.
Forms: 1) crustose - attached flat on a rocks/gypsum soil or crust; 2) foliose - with aerial parts standing up of soil surface; 3) wind-blown - not attached; collected at depressions/obstacles.
Survival - grow several thousand years old. Live in circumstances intolerable to other plants. Survive unpredictable climate, low temperatures, low light intensity, poor soil. Can take up moisture from unsaturated air.
Importance in ecosystem: first plants to cover bare spaces (protection against wind and water erosion); food supply to larger animals (springbok); form a microclimate which makes other life possible.
Human use: acids from lichens used to produce colourants, perfumes and antibiotics.
