The Amazons from Libya
hough most of the ancient Greek writers report on the Amazons that they once had lived at the river Thermodon in Northern Turkey, beside it there is a tradition that Amazons once had existed in Libya in Northern Africa.
However the Libyan Amazons should have lived long before the Amazons from Thermodon! There exists a picture on a Greek vase which obviously shows a negroid Amazon kneeling in front of an altar. Behind the altar you can see a palm-tree, so it is quite clear that the Greek artist depicted an African Amazon, apparently an Amazon from Libya.
Is there archaeological evidence for Amazons in Libya? In the Southwest of Libya in the mountain area of Fezzan there were discovered very interesting and partly curious rock engravings. The engravings must be very old. Today this area is a stone dessert, where human life is impossible. This picture must have been made when living there was possible, long time ago. One of this engravings shows a female person. She wears a pointed cap , Amazons on Greek representations wear very similar caps . Furthermore this figure is armed with a bow - a popular weapon of the Greek Amazons.
The conformity with the Greek Amazons is extremely striking, if it would not be certain that this picture was found about 1000 kilometers south of the Mediterranean coast in the heart of the African continent, you would suppose that these pictures belong together.

    LIBYA BRIEF HISTORY
    History:
The area corresponding to modern-day Libya was first colonized in the 12th century BC by the Phoenicians, who established trading posts in Tripolitania and at several other points along the North African coast. The Carthaginians took over these Phoenician colonies in the 6th century BC and expanded them as part of the mighty Carthaginian Empire. The Greeks also settled in the area of Cyrenaica, which is mentioned by the Herodotus, the Greek historian, writing in the 5th century BC. When the city of Carthage fell to Rome in the second century BC, the whole of the African Mediterranean coast was under Roman dominance for almost 600 years. When the Roman Empire fell into decline, however, the area was invaded first by the Vandals in AD455 and later by Byzantium in the following century. An Arab invasion of Libya in AD643 marked the end of Byzantine dominance. Libya was then ruled by a succession of Arab dynasties, including the Umayyads, Fatimids and Almohads. A brief period of supremacy by the Normans occurred in 1146, and a longer period by the Spanish, who held sway in Libya for the first half of the 16th century. Turkish forces conquered the land in 1551, and Libya then became part of the Ottoman Empire. At the beginning of the 18th century, the region began to break free of its Turkish rulers and enjoy greater autonomy. Its huge prosperity throughout the 18th and early 19th centuries was based almost entirely on revenue from piracy, which characterized the Barbary Coast at this time. By 1835, however, Ottoman rule was re-established in Libya.

The U.S. Air Raid on Libya in April 1986 - A Confidental Soviet Account from the Stasi Archives
General Jaruzelski certainly was aware of the sophisticated level of Libya's Soviet-supplied air defenses. But apparently he had not been given the information Soviet Air Force Marshal Koldunov had provided the East German military leadership a few days earlier. Koldunov had indicated that the Libyans had not let a group of Soviet specialists investigate the results of the U.S. strike and the performance of Libyan air defenses, not allowing them to enter their country before April 20. So Koldunov was only able to convey to the East Germans some revealing preliminary reports from Soviet advisers who had been with the Libyan military before, during and after the U.S. air attacks. Quite certainly he was not aware of East Germany's role in triggering them.
This and other cables were intercepted and decoded by the United States government. Numerous other bombing plots against American installations and citizens in different parts of the world originated in those days in Libya.
