    Lessons from the Library
April is School Library Media Month, a great time to reexamine your students' library know-how! Do your students know diddly about Dewey? Do they believe that "biography" is a television show? Do they think call numbers belong in a telephone's memory? Are your students convinced that a "librarian" is a person born under the sign of Libra? If so, it's time to reel them in and get them reacquainted with reading, researching, and the library! Included: Five fun lessons to reinforce library skills! During your April observance of School Library Media Month, celebrate with lessons that encourage your students to rediscover the wealth of knowledge found in your school's library! Library skills can often get lost among the rigors of any curriculum, but these are the skills needed to complete tasks adults face every day finding information, summing it up, internalizing it, and sharing it. This month, schedule a visit to the library in person or online to sharpen your students' research skills!

Resources From The Internet To Use For Library and Research Skills TeachersFirst TeachersFirst is a web resource for K-12 classroom teachers who want useful resources and lesson plans to use with their students. There are loads of good links to timely and current topics here. Develop Your Own Webquest "In the summer of 1995, Bernie Dodge, a professor of educational technology at San Diego State University, developed an innovative approach to using the Internet as an integral part of teaching any subject at any grade level." They are called Webquests. This site will help you make your own Webquests for use with your students. The Dewey Decimal Classification System Oregon Information Literacy Guidelines A draft version of guidelines developed by the Oregon Educational Media Association. Oregon's Common Curriculum Goals were the starting point; benchmarks were then written for Language Arts standards that relate to library skills and information literacy. OLIS Elementary Library media specialists from 10 Oregon elementary schools developed this site in 1999. Their goal was go create a Web place for Oregon elementary teachers and students to learn information literacy skills, to read books on the Web, and to easily find information on the Internet. They created a model that correlates national and Oregon information literacy standards. This model suggests activities with links to selected online reference sources, and includes a section on assessment and evaluation to determine how students are reaching the standards.
