Library of the Workplace The Library of the Workplace is a web site resource for teachers, students, and career counselors. It is designed to demonstrate how concepts and skills taught in the classroom are connected with activities performed in the workplace. The web site features employees who describe the knowledge and skills essential to their work as well as their backgrounds and career paths. As they explain the thinking and problem-solving skills they use on the job, their enthusiasm and commitment to their work make them appealing role models for young people. The Library thus supports teachers in answering a question often asked by students: "Why do I have to learn this?" It integrates abstract concepts and applications in a format that is easy to use and enjoyable. The Library of the Workplace is available without charge at: http://www.cord.org/workplacelibrary

Through assignments and discussions students apply thinking skills to their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. Defining words: What is a pioneer?
Brainstorm with your students what the work pioneer means. After a discussion of the word, ask them to identify five pioneers. Once they have identified five pioneers draw a chart to see what accomplishments were achieved by these pioneers. Be sure to note male/female representation. This will serve as a good pre-test of their knowledge and perspective. Community History
Who are the pioneers in you community? This year's theme provides an opportunity for students to discover the women pioneers in their own communities. This could be a history, geography, civics or writing activity. It is also skill based in terms of research, reporting, listening skills, and library skills. Activities
1.Invite a locale historian, community librarian, college history teacher, scholar, or researcher who knows a lot about local history into the classroom to discuss how women have helped build the community.

by Janet Murray "The new education must teach the individual how to classify and reclassify information, how to evaluate its veracity, how to change categories when necessary, how to move from the concrete to the abstract and back, how to look at problems from a new direction - how to teach himself. Tomorrow's illiterate will not be the man who can't read; he will be the man who has not learned how to learn." Herbert Gerjuoy Correlate Mike Eisenberg's and Bob Berkowitz' Big6 Skills™ with the national Information Literacy Standards developed by the American Association of School Librarians ( AASL ) and Association for Educational and Communications Technology ( AECT ) and the National Educational Technology Standards for Students ( NETS ) to organize an introduction to research on the Internet.
