Public Health
Dedicated to the memory of Jonathan Mann MD, MPH (1947-1998)
"There is a crisis of identity in public health. To ensure conditions in which people can be healthy we must work to change the underlying societal conditions. Public health has rarely been able to go beyond pointing at these larger issues, such as poverty, economic globalisation, and lack of political will." (Jonathan Mann 1997)

This site is part of the WWW Virtual Library project, the first and in my humble opinion the best portal to the world-wide web. Information is categorised by: Please email Eberhard Wenzel if you know of any online information concerning Public Health which is not yet on this list. You may also wish to send me your comments or suggestions It is the policy of the WWW Virtual Library: Public Health only to include links to meaningful resources. This is why I have refrained from evaluating and marking the links individually. I believe that the purpose of such a library is the provision of the best I could find on the WWW. I have included descriptions of the links though, sometimes using the original description, sometimes writing my own.

Public Library Annual Reports 1850-1919
A searchable database
Enter the database This searchable database of the indexed contents of British public library annual reports, from the period 1850-1919, was set up in July 2001 as the fruit of a project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) , conducted by Dr. Chris Baggs and G.K. Peatling at the Department of Information Studies University of Wales Aberystwyth This database is largely derived from the collection of annual reports held at the Thomas Parry Library at the University of Wales Aberystwyth . This collection includes around 2,300 annual reports issued by public libraries falling in the period 1850-1919. A sample of these reports, approximately 500 in number, are fully indexed in the database. The current coverage of this sample may be searched here . It is intended to extend this coverage where possible. The database does not contain full-text access to the annual reports themselves, but provides a searchable description of their contents, as well as some location information. Two articles describing technical aspects of this project have been published in the Journal of the Association of History and Computing , and may be of methodological interest to researchers in a variety of historical fields. The articles describe respectively:

INTRODUCTION
Universal Library of Uffenbachiana (1729-1731) PREFACE The exhibition Libraries. From Antiquity to the Renaissance and Important Humanist and Monastery Libraries (3000 BC - AD 1600 is designed to present the history of the institution of the library throughout the centuries, the influences exercised upon it by various intellectual trends, the successive changes in the form of the library and the material housed in it, and the historical background in general. It also aspires to identify those causes that influenced both the spread of the institution of the library and also the typology of its architectural form and its equipment. Library, bibliotheke: the Greek term, as Pompeius Festus notes, was used by both Greeks and Romans to indicate either a large number of books or a place in which books were kept.
