Glossary of Terms
Agni (ON-yee): A people residing in present day Ivory Coast, they comprise several small chiefdoms whose stable crops are yams and cocoa. Like the Ashanti to whom they are related, the Agni have a long urban and trading tradition and their political system is organized around rulers and courts. Their artistic tradition includes gold and silver as well as wooden objects in a highly refined style.
Ancestor: One from whom an individual is descended. In many African societies, ancestral spirits are considered to guide and influence living descendents and to intercede on their behalf in the spirit world. Thus, ancestors are an important part of everyday life.
Animism: A term used to designate a general belief that all natural objects possess spirits.
Baga (bah-GAH): An agrarian culture residing primarily on the west coast of Africa in Guinea. The Baga are involved in farming, with rice as the principal food and cash crop, and fishing.
Dan: A farming and hunting people residing primarily in northern Liberia and among the most reknown mask-carving groups in West Africa. Like the Wee people, the Dan have a dual world view in which the village and village life is separate from the bush, or forest, which is the home of the spirit world. Much of the masking practice is related to the acknowledgement of the forest spirits.
Dogon (DOH-gohn): A strong, independent agrarian culture residing in Mali near the great bend of the Niger. The Dogon culture has developed into a very complex society which includes systematic knowledge in many fields. The Dogon are especially known for sophisticated design and decoration.

USAID HISTORY
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) program began its development assistance in the 1950s.
USAID GOAL
The USAID program in Liberia is adjusting its program strategy to address the absence of democratic values and practices. The program is carried out by the non-governmental sector, with the goal of strengthening the capacity of civil society to play a greater role in transforming Liberia's political, social, and economic conditions. It continues to implement activities that improve the food security and health status of the Liberian people. USAID also continues to provide training - in literacy, numeracy, life, and vocational skills - for war-affected youth, including ex-child soldiers.
CURRENT USAID PROGRAMS
Civil society: USAID assistance through non-governmental organizations (NGOs) strengthens the capacity of civil society and the media to promote decentralization and sensitize the population of their human rights and their civic responsibilities. Civil society strengthening is critical in developing a culture of tolerance, an informed electorate, viable political parties, and an enabling environment that may positively affect the nature and outcome of Liberia's presidential and general elections in 2003.

Some Issues and Questions:
The relationship between Liberian culture and the development of the Liberian state was an often-repeated issue in many discussions at the 34 th Annual Meeting of the Liberian Studies Association last spring in Philadelphia. There was the feeling among many speakers, and perhaps rightly so, that this relationship should be revisited because earlier studies were deemed inadequate in comprehending the antecedent and proximate causes of the Liberian civil war and the new imperatives in preparing for peace and building a Liberian nation-state, which might have been an “imagined community.” This concern is borne out by many recent studies on Liberia, which address the relationship between state culture and ethnicity, ethnonationalism in Liberian education, the conflict and peace processes in the Mano River sub-region, the role of religion in conflict mediation, and the value of contingency versus theoretical analysis of conflicts. In this context, many research questions emerge whose answers can fill knowledge gaps in the search for sustainable solutions to the problems that this relationship invoke.

Maps of Liberia, 1830-1870 traces the history of Liberia through twenty maps of the American Colonization Society, organized in 1817 to resettle free black Americans in West Africa. Through interpretation and analysis of these maps students can study colonization societies, African Americans' search for equality, colonization and nation building, and the effects of the American Civil War and Reconstruction. 1) Colonization Societies As an alternative to living in America, some whites believed it would be better if free black Americans lived elsewhere. They founded colonization societies to assist in relocating free blacks to Africa. The American Colonization Society, founded in 1817, established a colony in Liberia on the west coast of Africa. By 1867, the society had sent 13,000 emigrants to Liberia. Some slave states formed colonization societies, as well. Several merged with the American Colonization Society in 1838 to form the Commonwealth of Liberia. The maps in this collection are from the American Colonization Society collection. Students can use
