America's Libertarian Future?

by STEVE DASBACH
Just 12 years after winning the presidency in 1848 with Zachary Taylor as their candidate, the Whigs ceased to exist as a political party. Could the same thing happen to the Republicans or Democrats? Consider:
  • In the last presidential election, 90 million eligible voters didn't bother to go to the polls.
  • Only one in four Americans trust their government to do what's right most of the time, according to a recent Washington Post poll.
  • Astoundingly, a poll by Maricopa Research about life in the next century found that more Americans think we will be able to beam people back and forth like they do in Star Trek (31%) than think we will be able to end the political corruption of Republicans and Democrats (15 %).
Here's the good news: Although many Americans have given up on this government, they haven't given up on making positive changes via the political system more than 60% want to see a new political party. The question is, what kind of new party are they demanding?

Court decision on political party rules has wide implications

KERRY O'BRIEN: Legal and political history was created in South Australia today. Supreme Court Justice Mullighan ruled that political parties are accountable before the law and that a court can decide on internal party squabbles.
The judgment came after a dissident backbencher, Ralph Clarke, took the Labor Party to court, claiming over 2,000 members had been drafted into the party as part of a massive branch-stack. The court found in his favour that the party had failed to uphold its own rules.
But as Mike Sexton reports, the case has implications beyond SA and beyond the Labor Party.
RALPH CLARKE, SA LABOR MP: This actually is a warning to all political parties, not just the Labor Party, that you must run your affairs in accordance with the rules.
MIKE SEXTON: South Australian backbencher Ralph Clarke today carved a place for himself in the 108-year history of the Labor Party.
RALPH CLARKE: If you just happen to have a temporary majority on the day and you think you can ride roughshod over ordinary members of the party, then think again. You can have your, you can be looked over the shoulder by an independent impartial court.
MIKE SEXTON: Clarke dragged his party to the Supreme Court, claiming it had broken its own rules. And, in a landmark decision, the court ruled in his favour.

Is the party over?
Author: Graham Young
Date: 22 August 2002 Is the party over
for the Democrats?
Australia's political parties are in deep crisis, a point underlined recently with the resignation of Democrat leader Senator Natasha Stott Despoja. Graham Young, no stranger to party machinations himself as a former vice-president of the Queensland Liberals, looks at the big picture and finds that student politics can be poor training for the real thing.
During the last Federal Election Democrat Leader Natasha Stott Despoja let her hubris show when she declared she would not participate in a debate with the Greens and One Nation because they were both minor parties and the Democrats were a "major party". The election result and the latest polling put the lie to that, but in an odd way the Democrats are showing some of the same stress fractures as the major parties. The Australian Democrats' current problems, centred around the defection of Meg Lees and the strategic intransigence of Andrew Murray, are another species of problems that affect all the major political parties. Natasha has now pulled the plug on her leadership, which raises all sorts of interesting questions on how the Democrat organisation replaces her. But, the problems with Senators Murray and Lees were never really ideological. They are management issues. If the party organisation had not inflicted a parliamentary leader on the party that the parliamentary organisation did not want, and if that leader had not over-estimated her power and on the basis of that tried too hard to assert leadership, the problem would not exist. How different is this from what happens in the Liberal Party? Or the ALP? What are the common themes?

2001 General Election An Introduction Some Recent History What the Liberal Party Stands For How we get things done ... A-Z of Liberal Party Policies An Introduction This is the Manifesto of the Liberal Party, not to be confused with the Liberal Democrats. We seek to build a Liberal society in which every citizen possesses liberty, property and security, with none enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Our chief care is for the rights and opportunities of the individual and in all spheres we set freedom first. The policies detailed here reflect the fundamental Liberal belief in the equality of personal worth of every individual and a society which maximises the life chances of all, regardless of colour, creed, race, gender, sexual orientation, or where they live on the planet. Liberals proclaim that everyone should enjoy freedom of thought, of speech and of action, provided they do not impinge on the freedom of others, and that everyone should be equal before the law. We hope that, having read the manifesto, you will support us by voting Liberal, by becoming a member or by contributing to our campaign funds.

How do you plan to address the above situation? Ontario Liberals feel it is deplorable that Ontario is last out of ten provinces in per-capita funding for universities. A McGuinty government will make a significant reinvestment in our university system to ensure continued excellence. 2. In December 1996, the Advisory Panel on Future Directions for Postsecondary Education in Ontario stated unequivocally in its first two recommendations that there are "serious inadequacies in total financial resources available to postsecondary education" and that the level of public funding for the province's universities be increased to the national average per capita; does your party endorse these recommendation? When do you expect to increase funding to the national average per capita?

WHAT DOES AOL HAVE AGAINST 'LIBERALS'?
AOL has specific guidelines which one must adhere to in order to maintain posting privileges. Yet, each day, sometimes hundreds of times a day, they do not follow their own guidelines. 'Hate speech' against a certain group of individuals is not allowed and 'Liberals' are a very large group of individuals.
*Contains vulgarities directed toward another individual or group
*is intended to victimize, harass, degrade or intimidate an individual or group of individuals on the basis of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, race, or sexual orientation. Hate speech is unacceptable anywhere on the service.
Many Democrats have also found their 'opinions' to be removed from the AOL message boards sometimes without a specific reason. They have received 'Terms of Service Violations' for which they think could have been done deliberately in order to discourage them for speaking their mind. To be perfectly fair here, I have spoken with AOL LDRS News Monitors that are as unbiased as they can possibly be and find their voluntary work to be unappreciated. They note things of which they do not approve nor which they have control of. We then must look further up the AOL chain of command all the way to Steve Case to ask that this 'bias against Liberals' be addressed.
No, this web page is not about 'His Fraudulence' as we all are quite aware that GW Bush was anointed to his thorny throne by the USSC. It's not about the 2000 stolen election where no one's vote counted. It's not about World War Dubya and his desire to extend his oil pipeline through Iraq. It's not even about the millions of unemployed and those with no health insurance. It's about our right to speak out against GW Bush, the faux POTUS! It's about our voices being stifled by the media, during protests and even on a public message boards!

Liberal International
Liberal International is the world federation of liberal political parties. Founded in 1947 it has become the pre-eminent network for liberal parties and for the strengthening of liberal democracy around the world. There are a number of common principles which unite all liberal parties from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe; human rights, free and fair elections and multiparty-democracy, social justice, tolerance, social market economy, free trade, environmental sustainability and a strong sense of international solidarity. Naturally in the application of these principles in different national circumstances there is diversity among liberal parties.

What We Say
Liberalism
Liberals are committed to build and safeguard free, fair and open societies, in which they seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no-one is enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Liberals champion the freedom, dignity and well-being of individuals. We acknowledge and respect the right to freedom of conscience and the right of everyone to develop their talents to the full. We aim to disperse power, to foster diversity and to nurture creativity. The freedom to be creative and innovative can only be sustained by a market economy, but it must be a market that offers people real choices. This means that we want neither a market where freedom is limited by monopolies or an economy disassociated from the interests of the poor and of the community as a whole. Liberals are optimistic at heart and trust the people while recognising the need to be always vigilant of those in power.

Political Links I have included some political links, which I shall expand upon over time. The links do not imply an association of ideas, or endorsement of the linked site. British British politics is dominated by three parties: Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat. It is highly conservative, and the capital based economy has resulted less and less value being placed on skills. Politicians have tried to correct this with good will gestures, but skill standards have fallen dramatically in the last 20 years. A monarch is the Head of State, and the Prime Minister meets weekly with HM Queen. The Queen has considerable influence, but this is almost never spoken about. Labour Party The Labour Party renamed itself about 5 years ago, and is now called new Labour. It was created about 100 years ago in response to the industrial revolution and the obvious opportunities employees saw to get more money from companies which became dependent on labour. As the so called British middle class expanded to include most people, the old ideas of Labour became unelectable, and after a series of humilating defeats the party undertook huge changes, especially destroying "Clause 4" or the clause promising full employment. With this clause gone, the party was effectively endorsing capitalism which relies on unemployment to ensure a labour pool is available and therefore inflation is kept down.

Both the politically observant as well as the less-savvy occasional news watchers of the True North had the opportunity in the past few weeks to see Canada's new political "tit" do just that. However, this article is not really about the death of the western Canadian political right, nor is it about the revival of Canada's national political right, the Progressive Conservatives, which, after being demolished to only 2 seats in the HOC in 1993 after nine tarnished years in government with Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, are now trying to show that they could be a viable government-in-waiting as they have been for over 75 of the past 100 years.
