Twelve years earlier Captain Robert Gray, an American navigator, had sailed up the mouth of the great river he named the Columbia. Traders and trappers reported that the source of the Missouri River was in the mountains in the Far West. No one, however, had yet blazed an overland trail. President Thomas Jefferson was interested in knowing more about the country west of the Mississippi. In 1803, two years after he became president, he asked Congress for $2,500 for an expedition. To head the expedition, Jefferson chose his young secretary, captain Meriwether Lewis . Lewis invited his friend lieutenant William Clark to share the leadership. Both were familiar with the frontier and with Indians through their service in the army. Before Lewis and Clark set out, word came that Napoleon had sold an immense tract of land to the United States. The expedition would therefore be exploring American territory. Idaho, Montana, Washington T he Lewis and Clark Expedition was organized for the express purpose of exploring the new lands acquired through the Louisiana Purchase. Although this territory extended only to the limits of the area drained by the Missouri River, the expedition decided to explore all the way to the Pacific Ocean in order to gather further scientific knowledge, a particular interest of President Jefferson. S etting out from St Louis MO on May 14, 1804, the expedition started up the Missouri with a party of about 40 men and one large Newfoundland dog. After exploring the Platte River, they continued to Fort Mandan in present day North Dakota, where they wintered. After the breakup of winter ice on the Missouri, the party continued upriver and reach the mouth of the Yellowstone River just east of the present state line on April 26, 1805. E xploration of the Yellowstone would wait for the return trip. Lewis and Clark headed west along the Missouri into Montana. From the Yellowstone to the Musselshell River, they encountered no natives, but a great deal of wildlife. The area along the river where the expedition actually passed is now largely submerged beneath the Fort Peck Reservoir. Much of their path is now within the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. [

The History of the Lewis and Clark Expedition written by Irving W. Anderson Past President of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation, Inc. Prelude: to May 1804 n 1803 President Thomas Jefferson won approval from Congress for a visionary project that was to become one of American history's greatest adventure stories. Jefferson wanted to know if Americans could journey overland to the Pacific Ocean following two rivers, the Missouri and the Columbia, which flow east and west, respectively, from the Rocky Mountains. If the sources of the rivers were nearby, Jefferson reasoned that American traders would have a superior transportation route to help them compete with British fur companies pressing southward from Canada. On February 28, 1803, the Congress appropriated funds for a small U.S. Army unit to explore the Missouri and Columbia rivers and tell the western Indian tribes that traders would soon come to buy their furs. The explorers were to make a detailed report on western geography, climate, plants and animals, and to study the customs and languages of the Indians. Plans for the expedition were almost complete when the President learned that France offered to sell all of Louisiana Territory to the United States. This transfer, which was completed within a year, doubled the area of the United States. It meant that Jefferson's Army expedition could travel all the way to the crest of the Rockies on American soil, no longer needing permission from the former French owners.
