Because clinical trials are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical trials of a drug cannot be directly compared to rates in the clinical trials of another drug and may not reflect the rates observed in practice. The adverse reaction information from clinical trials does, however, provide a basis for identifying the adverse events that appear to be related to drug use and for approximating rates. Infusion-Related Adverse Events: Infusion-related adverse events resulted in discontinuation of Campath therapy in 6% of the patients enrolled in Study 1.The most commonly reported infusion-related adverse events on this study included rigors in 89% of patients, drug-related fever in 83%, nausea in 47%, vomiting in 33%, and hypotension in 15%. Other frequently reported infusion-related events include, rash in 30% of patients, fatigue in 22%, urticaria in 22%, dyspnea in 17%, pruritus in 14%, headache in 13%,and diarrhea in 13%.Similar types of adverse events were reported on the supporting studies (see Table 2). Acute infusion-related events were most common during the first week of therapy. Antihistamines, acetaminophen, antiemetics, meperidine, and corticosteroids as well as incremental dose escalation were used to prevent or ameliorate infusion-related events. (See

    LEUKEMIA
Alice, I have a friend who is diagnosed with Leukemia. I would like to know what it is and what the survival rate for Leukemia is. Good friend
Dear Good friend, Leukemia is a general term for several types of cancers which are represented by a proliferation of disorganized white blood cells in the bone marrow. They are called leukemic cells, and impair the production of red blood cells, platelets, and normal white blood cells. Leukemic cells circulate throughout the blood, impairing the function of organs such as the liver, spleen, lymph nodes or brain. Leukemias are either acute or chronic, and are classified by the type of abnormal white blood cell present. Acute cases generally develop more rapidly than chronic cases. If acute leukemia goes untreated it can be fatal within a few weeks or months. However with treatment, life can be prolonged and in some instances a complete cure may be provided. Approximately 6-7 new cases of acute leukemia are diagnosed per 100,000 people per year. Chronic cases include lymphocytic leukemia (excess mature looking lymphocytes), and myeloid leukemia (excess white blood cells called granulocytes). There are approximately 4 new cases of chronic lymphocytic leukemia per 100,000 people each year. It usually occurs in people over 50, and is incurable but is not always fatal. Treatment includes transfusions, antibiotics, and in severe cases, use of anticancer drugs, or radiation therapy. The disease progresses slowly, and more than half of those diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia survive at least five years from time of diagnosis.
