http://www.lbah.com/Feline/FeLV.html
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) Introduction Cause Stages Symptoms ... Prevention
Introduction FeLV is a very serious disease of the feline world was first diagnosed in the 1960's. Many cats that get exposed to the virus develop antibodies and are able to fight it off. This is especially true for cats that are free of parasites , are current on their routine vaccines, and are fed a good diet. Cats that have minimal exposure to other cats are at significantly less risk of getting this disease. Humans and dogs do not get this disease, nor do they get FIV.
Cause
It is caused by a retrovirus ( FIV is also caused by a retrovirus) that is spread from cat to cat by saliva and respiratory secretions. It is found in the urine, but this is not readily transmitted this way. The virus does not live more than a few hours outside a cats body unless it is in a moist environment, like a water bowl. This means that cats that share litter pans and feeding bowls, along with cats that fight, are at risk. Kittens born to mothers that have the virus are infected in the womb.
Stages The whole process from initial infection to the shedding of the virus in body fluids takes from 2-6 weeks.

    TRANSLATING RESEARCH TO CARE
In an effort to better translate research to patient care, clinicians and researchers become partners in the development of new approaches to cancer treatment and prevention. By Christopher Tedeschi In a genetics research laboratory at the USC/Norris Cancer Center, a scientist transfers an experimental gene to human blood cells, in the early stages of a program to treat cancer with gene therapy. Only steps away from the genetics laboratory, a lymphoma patient participates in Norris' first gene therapy trial. He receives a transfusion containing engineered genes developed by USC researchers. The trial's results will point to better methods for treating cancer with genetics-methods that will be tested in the same laboratory that conducted the original research. In each case, a partnership is formed when clinical medicine shakes hands with basic research; physicians mingle with epidemiologists and cell biologists. It's called translational research, and it's breaking new ground at USC/Norris. Translational research is, literally, the "translating" of basic epidemiological and laboratory studies into new methods of preventing, controlling, and treating disease in people. From Bedsides in China Recently, two USC researchers began unraveling a medical puzzle calling for all the tools of translational research. Alexandra Levine, M.D., professor of medicine and chief of the division of hematology, and Dan Douer, M.D., associate professor of medicine, are attempting to adopt a treatment for leukemia that was first utilized abroad.

Is wine really the answer? Is wine really the answer? Robert W. Griffith, MD
March 29, 1999 (Reviewed: September 19, 2002) Introduction Moderate alcohol intake has been shown to protect against heart attacks and strokes. Two studies were recently summarized in these pages . The question remains, however: what type of alcohol is best? Two recent studies from Denmark have looked at the problem. In the first, an attempt was made to differ between the effects of wine, beer and spirits. The second examined the dietary habits of wine drinkers, to test the relevance of the first study. Beer, wine or spirits? Over 13,000 participants aged 50 - 64 answered a questionnaire about their consumption of alcohol. Based on the results, they were classified into different categories according to their total weekly intake. Other questions covered lifestyles such as smoking status, educational level, income level etc. Participants were followed for 16 years. By the end of this period, over 800 strokes had been reported. Analysis showed that those who had less than 1 drink a week had a higher risk of stroke, compared with those who took 1 - 7 drinks a week. Those who drank more than 6 drinks a day also had an increased risk. These results are similar to the U-or J-shaped curves reported from other studies of alcohol consumption.

What is Leukemia? Leukemia is a cancer that starts in the organs that make blood, namely the bone marrow and the lymph system. In leukemia, abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and lymph system. When abnormal and immature white blood cells are produced, production of normal cells decreases and the ability to fight infection decreases. There are 4 major kinds of leukemia: acute, chronic, lymphocytic, and myelogenous . Acute leukemias progress very rapidly, and chronic leukemias progress slowly. The majority of the childhood leukemias are acute leukemias. Symptoms There are many symptoms of leukemia and everyone will not experience the same symptoms. Some of the symptoms are: Weakness or chronic fatigue, Fever of unknown origin, Weight loss that is not due to dieting or exercise, Frequent bacterial or viral infections, Headaches, Skin rash, Non-specific bone pain, Easy bruising, Bleeding from gums or nose, Blood in urine or stools, Enlarged lymph nodes and/or spleen, and Abdominal fullness.

    Causes, Incidence, and Risk Factors
The disease occurs in middle-aged people and children and is associated with a chromosome abnormality called the Philadelphia chromosome . Chronic myelogenous leukemia is characterized by a chronic phase that can last for months or years. The disease may have few or no symptoms during the chronic phase. Eventually, patients progress from the chronic phase to a more dangerous "accerated phase," during which the leukemia cells grow more quickly. Acceleration of the disease may be associated with fever (without infection)

MIAMI Nationwide clinical trials are under way for a drug that could help children battle the most fatal forms of leukemia. Different kinds of leukemias represents 30 percent of all cancers in children under the age of 15, and the outlook for these kids isn't encouraging. Up to a third, relapse after initial treatment. For those children, an investigative therapy is offering hope. 12-year-old Jesse Montalvo is one of them. He's now part of a clinical trial into a new drug called Clofarabine. Dr. Sima Jeha, Director of the study says, "I feel Clofarabine is the best drug to give them to increase their chances of remission with the least toxic side effects." Pediatric oncologist Dr. Steve Weitman agrees.

Drug offers hope in battle against leukemia, other cancers
October 26, 1999 Web posted at: 12:15 a.m. EDT (0415 GMT) LOS ANGELES (CNN) An experimental drug designed to combat chronic myelogenous leukemia, a common form of the adult cancer, has produced dramatic results in early clinical trials, according to a preliminary report released Monday. Unlike traditional, toxic chemotherapy remedies, which kill both cancerous and healthy cells, the drug STI-571 specifically targets an enzyme found only in leukemia cells, meaning patients suffer minimal side effects. Some experts think the new approach could work for other cancers as well. "This is a real home run," said principal researcher Dr. Charles Sawyers of the Jonsson Cancer Center at the University of California in Los Angeles. "Six or eight months ago, I would never have believed this."
