i s a small country lying towards the Southern tip of Africa. At 30 355 kmsq in area, Lesotho is one of the smallest countries within the African Continent. She has an arable land slightly less than 9%. It is situated between 28 degrees and 31 degrees South and between 27 degrees and 30 degrees East. This geographical setting puts Lesotho right within the Republic of South Africa, where to the North and West shares its boundary with the predominantly Sesotho and Afrikaans speaking Free State Province, to the South is the predominantly Xhosa speaking Eastern Cape, and in the East is the Zulu speaking province of Kwazulu-Natal. Over 75% of the country is highland country, and the highest peak in Southern Africa, which is found in Lesotho is Thabana-Ntlenyana and it is 3 482 meters high. The average altitude of lowlands is between 1 000 and 1 800 meters, and this is where the capital town Maseru lies, and where the majority of the population lives.

    The People
    T
he emergence of Basotho as a nation occurred around 1818 when King Moshoeshoe founder of the Basotho nation (1786-1870) formed alliances with an amalgam of clans and chiefdoms of southern Sotho people who occupied the area which is presently the Northern and Eastern Free State. Moshoeshoe was a pragmatic leader, who was able to forge unity among his people and defeated his enemies through diplomacy, and military conquest, whenever there was a need. He was also able to defeat the British and the Boers on the battle field, but was later forced to seek British protection at a time when the Boers were poised to take over Basotho land by force, and hence Lesotho was declared a British protectorate on 18 March 1868.

Finding A Better Way for Water Management
by Lori Pottinger and Korinna Horta
In recent years, governments, water planners and international agencies have warned that conflicts in the 21st century's will be fought over water. Increasingly, this concern is being used to justify new water-supply dams and river diversion projects. But dams and pipelines do not create new water, they merely move it from one set of users to anotherusually, from the poorest to the richest or, put another way, from the most frugal users to the most profligate. In fact, dams can reduce potable water supplies through evaporation from reservoirs and by harming water quality. In addition, in case after case, large water projects have exacerbated political tensions rather than eased them.
Water use has grown exponentially in modern times. The first 80 years of this century saw a 200 percent increase in the world's average per capita water use, which accounted for a remarkable 566 percent increase in withdrawals from the world's freshwater resources. This massive increase
in water extraction coincides with another "debt" on the water-ledger: a significant portion of these resources have now become unusable due to industrial and agricultural pollution. Since all life depends on water, present trends of water waste and pollution threaten the earth’s basic life support systems.

Lesotho Activity Grades 6-9: Regional Differences: Schooling [Reg, Rel, P]
Focus: similarities and differences between schools in the rural highlands and urban lowlands Resource: worksheet, "Alikes and Differences: Schooling in Lesotho Background:
This activity is an appropriate conclusion exercise because it asks students to apply what they have learned about Lesotho in a sorting task. Students will need to consider the role physical geography has played in shaping the daily experiences of two girls in secondary school. The experience of students in urban Maseru is not all that different from that of their contemporaries in the United States. On the other hand, Basotho students attending school in the mountains often have more in common with rural American youth at the turn of the century. First, the low population density in the highlands means most secondary schools in this region are boarding schools. Second, the rugged terrain of Lesotho's interior means many of these schools lack access to electricity, running water, and educational materials. Even teachers can be in short supply.
