Gina Ziervogel Seasonal climate forecasts and the potential for application among small-scale farmers in Lesotho, southern Africa Supervisor: Dr. Richard Washington Email: gina.ziervogel@geog.ox.ac.uk Contents: Research Summary Other Interests Research Summary The utility of seasonal climate forecasts for vulnerable regions, sectors and populations has yet to be fully realised. While great progress has been made in developing forecasts, less is known about the information needs and use of forecasts in vulnerable regions, sectors and populations. My thesis focuses on the small-scale farmers of Lesotho. I have completed 5 months of fieldwork in Lesotho and will be going back again during the rainy season. My research can be divided into 2 levels; the macro-level that is looking at the national level of forecast production and dissemination and the micro-level that concentrates on households and individual views of climate impacts and forecasts. At the macro-level I was looking at Lesotho Meteorological Services and how they develop and disseminate the forecast. I interviewed a number of people from organisations who received and might receive the forecast to find out their views and what they saw as the potential use of the forecasts. At the micro-level I worked with farmers in southern Lesotho in an attempt to understand how the climate impacts their lives, what information they receive and whether they would like to receive seasonal forecasts. The methods I used included surveys and participatory research.

This requires comprehensive monitoring tools able to establish the date, location and extent of veld fires rapidly. Satellite remote sensing plays an important role in providing such information. The SAC helped with the fire monitoring of the Western Cape fires that occurred during January 2000. As soon as a image over the target area was received processing began and the necessary information were send to the relevant decision makers. Coarse resolution optical sensors such as METEOSAT and NOAA/AVHRR provided continuous updates on the dynamics of cyclones. These synoptic overviews supplied valuable information in terms of flood early warnings. Higher resolution optical sensors (LANDSAT and SPOT) proved useful for mapping the extent of flooded areas through multi-temporal analysis, while active sensors like RADARSAT provided useful information under challenging weather conditions when optical sensors are of little use due to cloud cover. This emphasizes the valuable role of various satellite sensors during floods, when ground access to affected areas is often not possible for extended periods.
