THE LAND
Geography
T
he Kingdom of Lesotho is situated in the south eastern region of Southern Africa. Covering an area of 30,355 sq. km it is roughly the size of Belgium and is entirely surrounded by South Africa.
Lesotho's geographical formation is characterised by high mountains and deep valleys, and it is the only country in the world to have all its territory located at more than 1,000 metres above sea level. Known variously as 'the Roof of Africa' and 'the Switzerland of Africa' , more than 75 percent of Lesotho is mountainous, with only 25 percent considered lowland. The lowest point is 1,388 metres rising to almost 3,500 metres in the Maluti mountain range which forms the border with South Africa to the north east and south west.
The Maluti mountains are more than 200 million years old and Southern Africa's highest mountain peak, Thabana Ntlenyana at 3,483 metres, is located in the eastern part of Lesotho. Climate
Lesotho has a continental climate with four distinct seasons and extremes of temperature. Spring is from August to October and is the season of peach blossoms which contrast with the snowcapped Maluti mountains. Melting snow feeds the rivers and mountain streams.
Summer extends from November to the end of January. Due to the altitude, temperatures do not get unbearably high. Autumn, which runs from February to April, is harvest time in Lesotho. The winter months from May to July bring snow with dry, sunny days and cold nights. Temperatures can go as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius.

Lesotho Activities Grades 3 - 5: Amaizing Maize [Rel, P, M]
Focus: growing cycle and uses of a staple food; diet in Lesotho Resource: worksheet, "Amazing Maize," Background:
Originally from the New World, maize (corn) was introduced to southern Africa by Europeans several centuries ago. It is now the principal food crop of Lesotho. Because it grows well in this temperate climate, maize is, in fact, the staple food for rural Basotho. The excerpt for activities #1 and #2 (printed on the next page) describes some ways Basotho cultivate and use maize. Relatively inexpensive, locally grown, easily stored and versatile in preparation, maize is a food well-suited for the dietary constraints many Basotho experience because of economic and geographic circumstances. Activity #3 examines the role maize also plays in Lesotho school menus. Despite the predominance of maize in the diet of many Basotho, students should be aware that a wide variety of foods can be purchased in Lesotho. Well-supplied by South Africa, supermarkets in Maseru are virtually indistinguishable from those in the United Statesone can buy everything from frosted flakes cereal to pizza mixes. Nevertheless, such variety is generally inaccessible to most Basotho because family incomes are too low to purchase expensive, imported food. Lesotho's geography compounds the problem by affecting distribution of those goods. The country's rugged terrain makes the development of infrastructure physically and financially difficult. Thus, the more limited a community in its access to roads, the more constraints it experiences in diet. In isolated regions of the mountains, for example, one eats what is seasonally and locally grown (maize, potatoes, beans, and peasfresh fruit is almost never available because of the elevation). In addition, many schools in both the lowlands and highlands lack access to electricity and running water. Without refrigerators, mixers, and dishwashers, food storage, preparation, and clean-up must remain quite simple. For these reasons, locally grown, dry storage foods like maize and beans/peas are common menu items in rural schools.

    http://www.seelesotho.com/travel/info/geograph.htm
G EOGRAPHY The Land Daily Weather Forecast for Lesotho Lesotho is a small, independent nation about the size of Belgium. It is located in the middle of Southern Africa, completely surrounded by South Africa. It is known as "the Mountain Kingdom", with many peaks well over 3000m, and the highest "lowest" point of any country in the world at over 1000m. Geographically, most of Lesotho is a high mountain plateau, carved out by river valleys. Most of these drain into the Senqu river, which later becomes South Africa's major river, the Orange. The river valleys and the mountain ranges run from the northeast to the southwest of the country. The eastern edge of the plateau forms the Drakensberg mountains and the border with KwaZulu Natal. The western border is formed by the Caledon (or Mohokare) river, with the area between the Caledon and the first range of mountains forming what is known as the Lowlands.
In the Lowlands and the deeper valleys, the terrain is eroded into cliff faces, large overhangs and interesting rock formations. The rock here is sandstone, of which there are different layers. After the sandstone was laid down, large fissures formed and lava poured Out, forming a series of thick layers of basalt on top of the sandstone. Thus the peaks and ridges of the mountains are the harder basalt which have resisted erosion. The Lowland areas have had all the basalt layer eroded away and are into the sandstone. In many places the transition from the reds, oranges and yellows of the sandstone to the grey basalt is very clear cut.

this article Ice rats are some of the smaller inhabitants of the kingdom of Lesotho. They are very furry little rodents which can be seen throughout Lesotho as soon as you climb higher than about 2500m. They live in colonies with a minimum of approximately four individuals per colony. During the day, they mainly scamper around the borders of the colony searching for food or sit in the sun enjoying a bit of warmth. They are not very shy as they have very few natural predators and can therefore be approached to within a close distance before they vanish into their burrows. But before long the little heads start to pop out of their holes again. At night they move into their burrows where they huddle for warmth.
Left: two ice rats greeting Recently, ice rats have been implicated in the large-scale erosion observed in Lesotho. Usually ice rat numbers are regulated by the very cold winter conditions prevalent in these mountainous regions. Very often their burrows are covered in a thick layer of snow and the plants ice rats feed on are also scarce in winter. During the past few years though, the winters in Lesotho have been relatively mild and as a result the ice rat population has flourished.
