Paper ISBN 0-7006-1242-4, $9.95 Many rights that Americans cherish today go unmentioned in the U.S. Constitution. Where do these freedoms come from? John V. Orth answers that question in this unique and gem-like history of due process. Departing from the usual approach to American constitutional law, Orth places the history of due process in the larger context of the common law. To a degree not always appreciated today, constitutional law advances in the same case-by-case manner as other legal rules. In that light, Orth concentrates on the general maxims or paradigms that guided the judges in their decisions of specific cases. Uncovering the links between one case and another, Orth describes how a commitment to fair procedures made way for an emphasis on the protection of property rights, which in turn led to a heightened sensitivity to individual rights in general. On October 4, 1822, Rutherford Birchard Hayes was born in Delaware, Ohio. A Harvard Law School graduate, Hayes entered politics after a successful law career in Cincinnati and military service in the Civil War. He served as a Republican representative in Congress from 1865 to 1867 and was later elected governor of Ohio. Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th U.S. president in 1877 after a bitterly-contested election against Democrat Samuel J. Tilden of New York. Tilden won the popular vote, but disputed electoral ballots from four states prompted Congress to create a special electoral commission to decide the election's result. The fifteen-man commission of congressmen and Supreme Court justices, eight of whom were Republicans, voted along party lines deciding the election in Hayes's favor. The electoral dispute has come to be known as the Tilden-Hayes Affair. Because of the tension surrounding this partisan decision, Hayes secretly took the oath of office in the White House Red Room . He was the first president to be sworn in at the residence.

Austria's International Legal Status between 1938 and 1945
The "Anschluss" in 1938 from a legal and historical perspective:
On March 12, 1938, Austria was occupied by troops of the German Reich. Hitler had ordered the occupation to prevent a referendum on Austria’s independence, which the Austrian government had scheduled for March 13. On April 10, 1938, the National Socialists - under totalitarian circumstances that did not safeguard free and secret voting - organized another referendum, which resulted in a majority of 99.7 per cent in favor of Austria’s annexation ("Anschluss") to the German Reich. Between March 12, 1938 (the date of occupation) and April 10, 1938 (the date of Hitler's referendum) the Gestapo had already made some 50.000 to 76.000 arrests. Among the victims of these arrests were the political leaders of the late First Republic, Communists, Social Democrats and Christian Democrats, some of whom survived captivity and reassumed important political functions after 1945. On April 1, ten days prior to the referendum, the first political prisoners were sent to Dachau.

    - The Island's Parliament known as Tynwald and is the World's oldest parliamentary body, with over 1,000 years of unbroken rule. Tynwald is comprised of two chambers, the Legislative Council and the House of Keys, and is responsible for the passing of domestic legislation and the levying of taxes. The House of Keys has twenty-four members, who are elected by the Island's people to represent each of the fifteen constituencies. The Upper House, the Legislative Council, is made up of ten people and includes the President of Tynwald, the Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man, and HM Attorney General. Queen Elizabeth II, Lord of Man, is the Head of State and her personal representative on the Island is His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor.
