Culture, Democracy, and Postwar Lebanon

Writing and the Lebanese War

Elias Khoury is a Lebanese novelist, literary critic, and editor of the Mulhaq, the weekly cultural supplement of the leading Beirut daily, al-Nahar . He was born in 1948, and grew up in the Ashrafiyyeh neighborhood of Beirut. He became a pro-Palestinian militant after enrolling at the Lebanese University in the mid-1960s. In 1971 he wrote his first novel, ' ala Ilaqaat al-Dai'ra (On the Relations of the Circle ). In 1976, He wrote his second work, al-Jabal al-Saghir (The Little Mountain) a series of short 'portraits' of the civil war, based, in part, on Khoury's own experiences, In 1976, he left the armed ranks of the Palestinian movement, although he remained a strong supporter of the Palestinian cause, and began working as deputy editor of the social and political journal Shu'un Falastiniyyeh (Palestinian Affairs ). In 1979, he moved to the leftist daily al-Safir, where he became its literary editor, remaining there until 1991. He has written a number of other books and novels including al-Wujuh al-bayda' (The White Faces), Rahlat Gandhi al-Saghir (The Voyage of Little Gandhi), Abwab al-Madinah (City Gates)

The diversity of religions has enriched the cultural life throughout the centuries and this diversity is reflected in a common Lebanese tradition of excellence in the arts. Jewels, fashion, crafts and music express the attachment of the Lebanese to their civilisation, derived from antiquity. Lebanon is a member of the World Intellectual Property Organisation that protects all creations of human intelligence, whether written, plastic, graphic or oral. The jewellery sector counts many creators and is flourishing along with tourism, with more than 60 per cent of production either exported or sold in Lebanon to visitors. Traditional woodcraft is appreciated but suffers from the competition of modern furniture. Several companies have prestigious reputations that cross national borders and are selling their work in neighbouring countries.

24-Hour Culture
The government should now work towards the goal of offering public services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This goal although seemingly ambitious is easily achievable providing that all the strategies are implemented properly and in an efficient manner.
The end result of this huge overhaul of the system would be a greatly improved government that is able to communicate with its public successfully. for example the integration of everyday services such as banks, Post Office, supermarkets, accountants, interactive companies, industry and others regarding the way they can become in this service delivery.

69. Culture And General Information On Lebanon
the similarity between the two concepts has become clearer in presentday lebanon, where each sectarian group has its own agenda, political culture, and leaders
http://www.lebanon-guide.com/links/lebanon/intro.htm
CULTURE Education: The Lebanese, had one of the highest literacy rates in the Arab world. The rate was estimated at nearly to 80 percent in the mid-1980s. The war adversely affected educational standards. Many private and public school buildings were occupied by displaced families and the state was unable to conduct official examinations on several occasions because of intense fighting. Furthermore, the departure of most foreign teachers and professors, especially after 1984, contributed to the decline in the standards of academic institutions. In the 1980s there were three kinds of schools: public, private tuition-free, and private fee-based. Private tuition-free schools were available only at the preprimary and primary levels, and they were most often sponsored by philanthropic institutions. Many private fee-based schools were run by religious orders. Public schools were unevenly distributed among Lebanon's districts. The Beirut area had only 12.9 percent of the country's public schools, but a large number of Lebanon's private fee-based schools concentrated in or near Greater Beirut. Religion: Divisions within the Christian and Muslim faiths were considerable, but most observers accepted the Christian-Muslim dichotomy as the most salient in Lebanese society. Even so, identification by religious affiliation often blurs subtle social and economic considerations.

Arab Christians
By Kevin Filan Lebanon Egypt Iraq Israel Lebanon ... Syria 5,000 years ago the coast of Lebanon was home to the Phoenicians, one of the first great Mediterranean civilizations. Their cities were acclaimed in the Bible and other ancient literature for their wealth and splendor; the "Tyrian Purple" dye which made Tyre wealthy colored the cloaks of royalty for millennia. Alas, this wealth proved to be both blessing and curse, as the cities of Phoenicia were conquered repeatedly by tribute-hungry neighbors. Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines - all have left their stamp on this region. Still this land never forgot its Phoenician roots, not even when the worship of Baal was replaced by Christian churches. Today Lebanon's Christian community continues to fight for survival, and struggles to rebuild a country torn apart by decades of civil war.
From his mountaintop St. Maron (350-410) attracted followers impressed by his nights spent standing in prayer and his weeks and months of fasting. Later others would emulate him, setting up monasteries throughout the region. The Arabic conquerers who incorporated this region into the Islamic world faced stiff resistance from the Maronites who took refuge on Mount Lebanon and in the inaccessible regions of the Beka'a Valley. The mountains would also provide shelter for Islamic heretics, as Shi'ites and Druze settled here to escape persecution. Relations between them and the Christians would prove tense, and sectarian squabbling would become a recurring theme in the region's history.

Who's Who in Palestinian Politics
By Kevin Filan Hezbollah The Ba'ath Party Fatah The Grey Wolves Hamas ... Hezbollah Among the major players in Middle East politics, few have been as successful as Hezbollah. While Hizbollah's membership is Lebanese, not Palestinian, they have become inextricably embroiled in the "Israel Question." To date, they are among the few groups which can claim a victory over Israel: they take credit for Israel's May 24, 2000 withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Hezbollah has been responsible for some of the region's most notorious terrorist incidents, including the 1983 suicide bombing which killed over 200 US Marines in Beirut and the 1988 kidnapping and 1989 murder of Colonel William Higgins, among others. Uncompromising in their hatred for the "Zionist state," they continue to fire mortars and shells into the Israeli-controlled Shabaa Farms region and may well drag Lebanon, Syria and Israel into a full-scale war.
While Lebanon is home to over 1 million Shi'a Moslems (the largest Moslem group in Lebanon), they have historically been among the region's poorest and most downtrodden people. The Ottomans who ruled the Damask Senjak (the area which later became today's Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, and Israel) were Sunni Moslems, and considered the Shi'ites to be heretics. In the wake of the Ottoman Empire's collapse, Lebanon was founded as a home for the region's Maronite Catholics, another group which had faced widespread persecution during the Ottoman years. Lip service was given to including the Shi'ites in a coalition government, but for the most part they remained outsiders, mistrusted by Christian and Sunni alike.
