Your preference for one category or the other may be strong, moderate, or mild. A balance of the two is desirable. If you always act before reflecting you can jump into things prematurely and get into trouble, while if you spend too much time reflecting you may never get anything done. Learning and Teaching Styles in Engineering Education I have come to believe that while induction and deduction are indeed different learning preferences and different teaching approaches, the "best" method of teaching - at least below the graduate school level - is induction. Some students tend to focus on facts, data, and algorithms; others are more comfortable with theories and mathematical models. Some respond strongly to visual forms of information, like pictures, diagrams, and schematics; others get more from verbal formswritten and spoken explanations. Some prefer to learn actively and interactively; others function more introspectively and individually.

Hello, I have enjoyed reading your discussions on this web
page! I would like for you to dream about what features
you would like to enhance your teaching enviroment in the
class room. I am working with a reasearch group at NC
State Universty and we are trying to develop a product to
bridge the digital devide, and allow children to learn
with their own learning styles. If each student had a display and input device(keyboard,
touchscreen etc) what types of features and interactions
would you like to be able to have with them? Don't worry
about how possible it is, we'll figgure that out. Also how much time would you be willing to put into
working with the technology if it was simple and enhanced your teaching? If you have any further ideas or questions, please feel free to contact me. Thanks for your input! Austin asyoung@ncsu.edu Bonzi Learning Team

Cultivating Multiple Learning Styles in Fish 101
Fred Johnson, senior lecturer in the School of Fisheries , teaches the big one Fish 101 . Many of the 250 students who enroll in the course are non-majors seeking science distribution credits. With such a large number of students, Johnson strives to create an environment that teaches in multiple ways to address varied learning styles and levels of achievement. "If you can teach a diverse group of students and have them learn at their different levels simultaneouslyrather than having some bored and others over-challengedthen you are really pulling something off," smiles Johnson. "That is the high art of teaching." In pursuing that art, Johnson has experimented with email, spreadsheets, Web pages, and multimedia, but finds it necessary to continually monitor and evaluate their use to be sure they actually help students reach the objectives of the course.
    Enrich with Active Learning Options
Once a conventional lecture-and-quiz-sections class, Fish 101 has changed. Johnson has been experimenting with new approaches to the course, including optional "active learning" activities. Students get extra credit for participating, and, if they complete five activities, they can substitute that score for their lowest test grade. "We have been tinkering with the 101 class to give students a richer educational experience with learning options that appeal to different learning styles," explains Johnson.

Posted by David Carter-Tod , 3/20/00 at 2:03:29 PM. Stahl, S. (1999). "Different strokes for different folks? A critique of learning styles." American Educator, 23(3), 27-31. This is substantially a summary of the article (done with permission). I urge you to read it for yourself. The American Educator has now put this article online as part of its online archives (pdf). The Fall 1999 archive , which this article is part of, is here. This is an important issue for me, because I'm frequently asked about learning styles, and also because one of the drives behind the IMS Project is learning styles profiles matched to learning events. While the IMS Project is important, learning styles is not yet a reason to invest in it. Stahl starts out by talking about the popularity of the concept of Learning Styles, especially among teachers. He is at pains to respect the popularity of the concept: So, when teachers talk about the need to take into account children's learning styles when teaching, and researchers roll their eyes at the sound of the term "learning styles," there is more to it than meets the eye. (p. 27) The problem is that the idea is fairly intuitive, i.e. that people are different and might learn differently.

Examples of Mismatches Between Teaching and Learning Styles
Liu Hong, a third-year English major in Jiangxi Normal University, China, was in David's office again. After failing David's oral English course the previous year, Liu Hong had reenrolled, hoping to pass it this year. Unfortunately, things were not looking promising so far, and she was frustrated. When David asked why she was so unhappy in his class, she said: "I am an introverted, analytic and reflective student. I don't know how to cope with your extroverted, global and impulsive teaching style?" Jenny, an American teacher from California, sat in Dean's office again, feeling perplexed by the students' negative responses to her kinesthetic and global styles of teaching. Despite Jenny's persistent efforts to convince the students of the advantages of her teaching styles, she was told by her Vietnamese colleagues that her attempts were in opposition to the prevalent teaching styles in Vietnam. Jenny had specialized in applied linguistics for a long time and was well trained in the TESOL area in U.S.A. But all of a sudden, it seemed that all her teaching competence and experience had become useless in such a country where she had never been before.
    Analyzing the Examples
The above statements are representative of serious mismatches between the learning styles of students and the teaching style of the instructor. In a class where such a mismatch occurs, the students tend to be bored and inattentive, do poorly on tests, get discouraged about the course, and may conclude that they are not good at the subjects of the course and give up (Oxford et al, 1991). Instructors, confronted by low test grades, may become overtly critical of their students or begin to question their own competence as teachers, as exemplified by the Jenny's case above.

There was method in their (seeming)madness. The refreshments were zany, and early visitors to the Teaching and Faculty Support Center (TFSC) aren't likely to forget the menu, even if they tryTwinkies, Cheetos and root beer. "There were lots of left overs," one person recalled later. Folks were used to tidy bite-sized cookies and vegetables with low-fat dip at their faculty mixers. The off-beat refreshments were hardly an accident. "Paul and Wally and I wanted the Teaching Center to have an element of fun," said Ro Di Brezzo, one of three part-time co-directors who started the center. "We wanted to let people know that learning doesn't have to be awkward or difficult. I think we tried to carry that over." Each of the trio, selected to organize and run TFSC, is an accomplished and respected teacher first and foremost. They knew each other through University committee work, but had their own reservations about "telling people how to teach." They wondered how the center would be viewed by people on campusit was important, they felt, that the faculty know it was designed to be "by the faculty and for the faculty" and "not an administration deal."

Learning Styles and the 4MAT System:
    A Cycle of Learning
A Living Laboratory: Volcanoes provides, wherever possible, learning activities and an instructional sequence that accommodate four major learning styles identified in the literature. The sequence used is modeled after the 4MAT System developed by Bernice McCarthy, author of 4MAT in Action: Creative Lesson Plans for Teaching to Learning Styles with Right/Left Mode Techniques
This cycle of learning is based on a number of premises. First, different individuals perceive and process experience in different preferred ways. These preferences comprise our unique learning styles. Essential to quality learning is an awareness in the learner of his/her own preferred mode, becoming comfortable with his/her own best ways of learning, and being helped to develop a learning repertoire, through experience with alternative modes.
The fact that a student may have a preferred, most-comfortable mode does not mean she/he cannot function effectively in others. In fact, the student who has the flexibility to move easily from one mode to another to fit the requirements of the situation is at a definite advantage over those who limit themselves to only one style of thinking and learning. The four learning styles identified by McCarthy are:
    • Type 1: Innovative Learners are primarily interested in personal meaning. They need to have reasons for learningideally, reasons that connect new information with personal experience and establish that information's usefulness in daily life. Some of the many instructional modes effective with this learner type are cooperative learning, brainstorming, and integration of content areas (e.g., science with social studies, writing with the arts, etc.).

Some of us are visual learners that need to see to understand; while others need to hear or verbalize information. Others are hands on, kinesthetic learners. Some learners prefer to work alone, while some like to teach each other in small groups. Some need time to quietly reflect, while others need to move and be active. Teachers know that they need to use a variety of activities to meet the learning styles of their students. Learning Styles/Multiple Intelligences Are Needed
At-risk students often struggle to learn in a traditional classroom. Classrooms where learning activities are varied give these students the opportunity to excel. Students become involved in their learning rather than disinterested. Involved learners enjoy school and become lifelong learners. What Are Learning Styles/Multiple Intelligences?
