FOR PARENTS OF GAY CHILDREN
Can We Understand?
THE INITIAL SHOCK When You First Find Out
It is often a shock for parents to find out that their child is homosexual. Whether you are a mother or a father, whether you have a son or a daughter, whether you long suspected something of the kind, or were completely surprised, finding out for sure can be a shock. The feelings that shake you are very strong and confusing. You may hardly be able to talk about it at first without tears and anger. Every family is different and every case individual: one parent may find out by chance, another may be told face-to-face, a third may receive a phone call or a letter; the child may be a teenager or an adult, self-accepting or upset with what he or she is; parents may be ready to listen, or react by drawing back. For all, however, there are some underlying concerns and questions: COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS Parents Usually Want to Know: Q. Why did he or she have to tell us? A. Many parents think that they would be happier if they didn't know. What you must realize, however, is that if you did not know, you would never really know your child. A large part of his or her life would be kept secret from you, and you would never really know the whole human being. The fact that your son or daughter told you is a sign of his or her love and need for your support and understanding. After all, who should know if not you? No other minority is asked to hide from their own parents what makes them "different"!

The Quarterly Statistics publication presents data on the main activities of the National Insurance Institute - i.e. collection of insurance contributions and benefit payments in the various insurance branches - and is divided into sections by insurance branch. General Old-Age and Survivors Long-Term Care Income Support Benefit ... Enforcement and Implementation
Most sections include figures on the total number of payments in the branch, benefit recipients by different attributes, pension rates and average pension. Each section begins with its own preface, containing definitions and explanations of terms peculiar to that particular section. Explanations pertaining to all the sections are brought below.
Benefits - Payments made by the National Insurance Institute to the insured in the different insurance branches, according to the law. The National Insurance Law defines the payments to the eligible insured persons. In law, these are called benefits, pension, allowances, remunerations, grants and so on. The terms are interchangeable and have a similar meaning, appearing in each section according to the customary use at the NII.
Period - Generally, monthly or quarterly figures are listed for the current year, and annual figures for the last 5 consecutive years. As to earlier periods, as of 1955 figures are presented for every fifth year. Also included are years of particular interest in which a new law or significant amendment came into effect.

Advocating For Immigrants The Refugee Assistance Project The Immigrant Women and Children's Representation Project recruits and trains volunteer attorneys to help immigrant victims of domestic violence seek freedom from their abusers and attain legal status in the United States. Founded in 1996, the Project was developed to assist women and children prepare self-petitions to regularize their immigration status without relying on the sponsorship of an abusive spouse or parent. Through this process our staff and volunteer attorneys seek to remedy a historically coercive circumstance that perpetuates violence in the home. Volunteer attorneys assist clients with the preparation of the Self-Petition for Permanent Residency as well as other immigration documents such as those needed to obtain work authorization.
The Community Legal Immigration Clinic reaches out to underserved communities where immigrants need free legal advice. Since 1995 we have operated legal clinics throughout the city as part of our outreach efforts to large immigrant populations. Volunteers in this program counsel individuals on various matters of interest including family-sponsored immigration, naturalization and other related issues. In the past our clinics have taken place at various community-based sites in Jackson Heights, Chinatown and Washington Heights, and at the House of the Association.
