En benyttet samtidig anledning å samle alle ansatte i NND og personale som har en særlig tilknytning til NND som ansatte eller styremedlemmer i virksomheter hvor NND har interesser. Rettighetsbistand i Arkhangelsk Som en del av prosjektet "Et fullverdig og anstendig liv" knyttet til Institutt for barns utvikling, er det nå under utviking et underprosjekt som har som formål å yte juridisk bistand til foreldre med funksjonshemmede barn i Arkhangelsk-området. To jurister er engasjert og vil få sin spesialopplæring i Norge. Det er: Elena Shinkaryova og Irina Fedoseeva fra Arkhangelsk. Buss til utviklingshemmede barn i Arkhangelsk Siden høsten 2000 har utviklingshemmede barn i Nord-Norge sammen med menigheter samlet inn mer enn kr. 65.000 til buss for utviklingshemmede barn tilknyttet Institutt for barns utvikling. Bussen koster i Russland ca. kr. 60.000. Ved utgangen av mai måned nådde vi vårt mål. Nå ønsker vi å få inn penger slik at det også blir mulig å drive bussen i tiden som kommer.

Ion Iliescu of the Party for Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR) was elected president with a clear majority over Corneliu Vadim Tudor, representing the Greater Romania Party (PRM). New Government Adrian Nastase's PDSR minority government has been endorsed by the Romanian parliament. In the vote, the PDSR was supported by the National Liberal Party (PNL) and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), together with the parties who represent the minorities. Both the PRM and the Democratic Party (PD) voted against the proposed government. The PNL's support was tempered by comments suggesting that their purpose was solely to prevent a PDSR working with the extreme nationalist PRM. Valeriu Stoica, first vice-president of the PNL, went on to warn that the fine words of Nastase, proposing that his Government was for all Romanians, hid plans to select party members to senior positions in the economy, administration and media. The first act of the Nastase Government was to suspend many ordinances and emergency ordinances introduced by the previous administration of Mugur Is£rescu. The laws concerned are wide ranging and include those which affect, for example, education, roads, sale of state property, privatisation and the constitution of the Danube Delta nature reserve.

LATVIA Click on arrow to return to Latvia main menu page H istory of L atvia T he first human settlements in Latvia date back to the time just after the last glacier period, approximately 10,000 BC, but archaeologists have found traces of even older human culture. Nomadic tribes came into these territiries after the last glacier period, during the great migration from the Southwest. This culture had its origin from the mid-stone age human settlements in Ahrensburg in the region of Schleswig-Holstein in Germany. This early European culture was the leading until approximately 3000 BC, when other nations from the East are the ancestors of Finns, Estonians and Livs (a very small nation living in the northwestern part of Latvia, now an ethnic minoruty). In approximately 2000 BC, Baltic tribes came into Latvia, and are regarded as the ancestors of present day Latvians and Lithuanians. These tribes, coming from the South, assimilated to the nations already living on Latvian territory. The Baltic tribes first appear in written records of the Roman historian Cornelius Tacitus , in approximately 100 BC. He reffered to these nations as farmers living on the coasts of the amber sea.
