Success Studies: Study Skills
The purpose of the Study Skills class was to expose students to the many concepts and strategies that would help them become better students. Specifically, students experimented with several note-taking styles and practiced a half dozen memorization strategies. Additionally, we examined such topics as organization, time management, study environment, study habits, and test preparation. The goal of this course was that, upon completion, students would have a better understanding of the habits of an effective student.
Success Studies: SAT Preparation The objectives of the Upward Bound SAT Prep class were to assist the students to gain an understanding of the purpose, background and format of the SAT, to learn several test taking strategies and develop their own personal strategy, to increase and strengthen their vocabularies, and to increase and strengthen their math skills. Classroom activities and homework assignments included vocabulary and math quizzes and drills, sentence completion, analogies and reading comprehension exercises, and creation of SAT-type questions. Classroom sessions also included practice tests using sections of actual SATs, and group discussions of a variety of SAT-related topics. A creative project allowed students to collaborate in small groups on a presentation which incorporated a variety of math and verbal concepts presented in a medium of their choice. Students performance was assessed with significant weight placed on class participation.

Know Your ABCs: From the Mailbox
Dateline: 09/20/99 Have some letters been taken out of the alphabet?
Why do the letters have names?
Answering the question of which letters are in the Spanish alphabet isn't as straightforward as it may seem. Look in a dozen reference works and you very likely will get three or four different versions of the composition of the Spanish alphabet. Some list K and W in the alphabet; others say that those letters are only in foreign derived words (such as kilowatt ).. And others differ on the combinations such as ch and ll that would be interpreted as two letters in most languages. A recent letter led me to find the "official" answer to the question. Following is that letter and another one I've received recently about the alphabet, along with the responses.

The 13th-century motet, a creation (c.1200) of the school of Notre-Dame de Paris, was a polyphonic composition based on a tenor that was a fragment of plainsong (or, later, of any type of melody, sacred or secular) arranged in a brief, reiterated rhythmic pattern called an ordo. It existed side by side but was distinct from the conductus, an earlier development of choral composition, which was not based on preexisting liturgical chants and which employed several voice parts in a type of harmony. The motet's original text, sometimes only a word or two, was kept, but the tenor may have been played on instruments. The second part, called motetus [from Fr.

Plagioclase Feldspar (Labradorite)
(c) 2001 Andrew Alden, licensed to About.com, Inc. This specimen shows the peculiar form of schiller called labradorescence. The left image is the back side, unpolished, and the right image is the polished side. Not all labradorite displays this effect, but when it shows up you know it for sure. That's worth knowing, because otherwise the feldspar minerals can be very difficult to identify exactly. Feldspars are a group of closely related minerals that together make up the majority of the Earth's crust. A thorough knowledge of the feldspars is what separates geologists from the rest of us. Feldspars lie along one of two solid-solution series, the alkali feldspars and the plagioclase feldspars. All of them are based on the silica molecule, consisting of silicon and oxygen, which in the feldspars forms rigid three-dimensional interlocking frameworks. Labradorite is part of the plagioclase series.

Adobe Houses Adobe is a term widely used in the southwestern United States and Spanish speaking countries. Although the word is often used to describe an architectural style, adobe is actually a building material which uses bricks made of tightly compacted earth, clay and straw. Construction methods and the composition of the adobe will vary according to climate and local customs. Sometimes an asphalt emulsion is added to help waterproof the adobe bricks. A mixture of Portland cement and lime may also be added, but these materials will add to the cost. In parts of Latin America, fermented cactus juice is used for waterproofing. Would you like to live in an earthen home?

Click here for PDF version goals Welcome to the second-year Spanish Program at UNC-CH! The main goals of this course are:
1. to apply what you learned in Spanish 1 and 2.

During your first year of Spanish, your instructor led you through the basic structures and vocabulary of the language. Now you will have the opportunity to apply what you know and expand it, as you learn about the history and the culture of the people who speak this language. An important objective of this course is to help you develop your individual style of language learning. More of the responsibility for the development of the lessons is placed on the learner. You will be on your own more than you were in Spanish 1 and 2. 2. to study the culture of Spanish-speaking people.
As we study the history, the literature and art of the Spanish speakers around us, we get to know them, and ourselves, better. In this way we increase our capacity to communicate on many levels. The context of the lessons in this course is as important as the way we go about learning them and the language we use to study them. By the end of the semester students should:
1. Acquire sufficient knowledge of the language in order to be able to interact with Spanish speakers effectively (stating and supporting opinions; describing and narrating in the present, past, and future; etc.)

LATIN I: COURSE OUTLINE 2000/2001 Instructor: Nancy Baker Overview: What will be different about learning Latin in this class? No textbook. No workbook. No oral dialogues about what you did over the weekend or had for lunch. Otherwise, this is a beginning language class. You will be able to draw on your previous experiences as a language learner, and the vocabulary base you have learned in Spanish (particularly) or French will be useful. What is a typical class like? Nearly every class period will be an integrated lesson that brings together some aspect of culture or history with the Latin language, word derivatives, connections to literature, etc. A concept will be presented briefly, then practiced, connected, and extended through activity sheets, games, visuals, and practice materials. Latin is not learned in isolation, but with careful attention to its relevance in strengthening your language base. I promise that you will leave this class in June with a stronger and more confidently applied English grammar base than when you enter today. And you will have fun building it. Over two years of Latin, I try to give you a sense of the development of western civilization before 1500. The amount of time you spent on the oral component of French or Spanish is now going to be spent on history and culture. What do I need?
