Related Stories Despite exponential increases in Internet investment and access, Latin America's e-commerce consumer market figures to remain largely untapped for years to come, according to analysts specializing in the region. For example, the number of Latin Americans with Internet access is expected to quadruple over four years but only to six percent of the total population. That figure will look stark next to the 70 percent of U.S. citizens that are expected to have online access by 2003, according to International Data Corp. Internet analyst Marc Alexander. "Clearly, just getting the masses of users onto the Net is a huge hurdle," Alexander told the E-Commerce Times. Credit Where Credit Is Due The prohibitive cost of Internet access and security fears have often been cited for depressing the Latin American online population. However, one reason that has been downplayed, according to Jan Smith, managing director and co-founder of market research firm InfoAmericas, is the remedial status of payment technologies in the region. Globalization, the environment and sovereignty in Latin America For those of us monitoring the link between social justice and the environment, ISLA’s monthly publication has become a well that never runs dry. It reads “A new ‘slipper orchid’ found in Peru could be the most important orchid discovery of the past 100 years, and it’s turning the highly competitive industry into even more of a hothouse.” Discovery?! It was purchased at a roadside stand in Peru. Now the orchid is named for its “founder” –leaving the reader with visions of Christopher Columbus. It is entirely possible that Peru has become the global epicenter of food sovereignty issues. Efrain Zunia Molina of the Association of Maca Producers of the Mantaro Valley dubbed the Andean region “the world capital of biopiracy” (Farmers and Indigenous People Denounce Patents on Maca, ISLA web-site, Special Reports segment). Crime, disease and moral decline threaten societies COMMENTING FROM WASHINGTON The more than 38,000 people interviewed in the Global Attitudes survey are overwhelmingly dissatisfied with the way things are going in their countries today. Solid majorities in nearly every country in every region surveyed say they are unhappy with the state of their nation. Although just 4-in-10 Americans (41 percent) have a positive view of national conditions, people in the United States rank as one of the more contented populations in the world. Canada is the only country in the West where a majority of those surveyed (56 percent) is satisfied with the way things are going. The other relatively happy publics are in less open societies: China, Pakistan, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. There are great disparities in national satisfaction within and between regions. People in Canada and the United States are four times more likely than Latin Americans to express satisfaction with the state of their nation. There is a smaller but still substantial divide in Europe. People in Western Europe are twice as likely as those in most East European nations to give a positive rating to national conditions, though Czechs have more in common with the west than the east on this question. Similarly, respondents in China and Vietnam are much more satisfied with their country than are people in most other parts of Asia. In Africa, satisfaction is highest in Tanzania, Angola, Uganda and Mali. All of these countries have economically outperformed their regional counterparts in recent years.

All of them have used music as a kind of psychic divining-rod in their respective quests to uncover more about their roots. And in turn, they make music which echoes this search, conveying a vivid sense of place. In a post-colonial world where globalisation and cultural homogenisation are steadily increasing, music that does this has more and more appeal to audiences looking for alternatives to bland manufactured corporate McMusic. Paradoxically, that doesn't mean these artists are oblivious to foreign influences. Quite the opposite. Los de Abajo's music has an almost schizoid quality, combining aspects of Mexican roots with internationally popular styles like ska, reggae and rock. This mix-and-match approach is typical of many twentysomething artists the length and breadth of Latin America, and their drummer Yocu Arrellano explains it thus: 'Maybe because we are looking for something, you know, maybe because Mexicans and Latin Americans, we don't have a strong nationality or a strong identity. I don't know what I am. I am half Spain, half from Mexico. So we are just looking. I think the Mexicans, we have a tradition of no nationality, of we don't know about who we are and for centuries ago, and the music of course (reflects) this thirst.'
