T he Following article is reprinted with the permission of Lapidary Journal
This article ran in the September, 1996 issue. Hooked on High Tech by Andy Oriel If there is a gene for novelty-seeking, as recent scientific studies have suggested, Dave Burchett almost certainly has it. An avid traveler, collector, and scholar, the Colorado jeweler has a metabolic need to try new things. working diligently to satisfy his interests in art, science, music, and writing, he has earned a degree in geology, taught himself to play piano, written a children's story, and woven a rug on a full-scale replica of a Navajo loom he built himself. Along the way he has traveled widely, acquiring nearly every electronic gadget known to man, and established noteworthy collections of Navajo weavings and contemporary comic art. A recent series of silver and gold boxes, for example, is inspired by Japanese Taiko drums, but these pieces feature Paleolithic-like figures on their covers and futuristic scripts on their stands. They were designed, like much of his jewelry, on the latest computer design software. Like a chameleon, Burchett is so adept at so many different styles that you wonder what his true colors are. The only constants seem to be a driving need to reinvent himself, and the fact that he is hopelessly hooked on high-tech. Put them together and you have a recipe for irresponsible creativity; the result is a tasty selection of postmodern treats. THE BACK DOOR of the Boulder, Colorado, gallery flies open, and a burst of energy blows in like a whirlwind. Burchett is back from an errand with a coffee cup in one hand and a cell-phone in the other. At 38, the compact, well-fed man is all hammer and tongs, as the saying goes. His round eyeglasses, trim mustache, and jovial manner give him a passing resemblance to Teddy Roosevelt. He is a perpetual motion machine swaddled in a Navajo print jacket, a man who will crack a bad joke and then laughingly apologize.

Bring on the Beads Bead Embroidery - Part 2 Last installment we learned a bit about preparation of fabrics for bead embroidery. This week, we'll talk about beads! Just about any and all beads can be used in bead embroidery. I've seen many different types used but I prefer the basic Japanese or Czech 11/0 as a basis for embroidery designs. Also, size 13/0 Charlottes and 15/0's can be used. Actually, just about any size seed bead will work, and be gorgeous! The stitches you use make a difference, too. When you are applying beads to a fabric piece, try to think of your beads as brush strokes. Position the beads in such a manner that they follow the natural line of the object you are beading. You'll be amazed at how beautiful your pieces will look! Also, keep shading in mind. Gradual and subtle shading in a piece can make all the difference. If you are using a picture for a model, pay close attention to this detail. Spend time choosing your beads. Think of highlights and use a shiny opaque bead. Mattes work really well for skin tones, and there are lots of colors you can use. Betcey at

We do gemstone cutting for jewelers and goldsmiths. We work with all types of gemstone materials except for diamonds. Make your jewelry designs unique by using special cuts and inlay. This can help prevent your designs from being easily copied and reproduced. It can be difficult to find a lapidary shop that will work on difficult gem cutting jobs, but as you will see, we do not shy away from them. View our portfolio to see why so many jewelers have used our lapidary services over the years. Please feel free to contact us for a price quote on gem cutting or to answer any jewelry related questions you may have. We do not carry any inventory. These photos are examples of work we have done. Inlays We have specialized in doing high quality inlay for many years. It is a form of gem cutting which requires special techniques to attain a very tight fit in the piece of jewelry so that no glue is showing. We are often told that it appears as though the stone was poured into the ring. Special Cuts We do special gem cutting to your specifications to accommodate your designs. You design it and we cut it the way you want it cut. There are few lapidary shops left which do custom gem cutting.
