From the Back Cover
Written by one of the leading lapidaries in the country, Lapidary Carving for Creative Jewelry is exclusively concerned with the development of contemporary design in gemstone cutting. Virtually all the techniques described are original and time-tested by the author. Here he shares the wealth of his considerable experience. Illustrated with 132 photographs, this book clearly describes the carving of small transparent gemstones into ring and pendant forms. Methods for carving basic shapes are explained. Techniques for making special tools are summarized, including detailed instructions on how to kiln-fire miniature grinding wheels. Drilling and frosting methods, as well as the important finishing processes of smoothing and polishing are painstakingly listed. Entire chapters are devoted to detailed descriptions of carving techniques and problems encountered with each of the major gemstones. Henry Hunt has both written and been the subject of numerous articles in all major lapidary and jewelry publications. His lapidary work has been incorporated into the jewelry of a large number of goldsmiths throughout the United States. He attended the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, The Sadkine Academy of Sculpture in Paris, and the University of California at Berkeley.

Fundamentals of Lapidary Part 5,
Faceting
By Donald Clark CSM
Faceting is a marvelous amalgamation of engineering and art. Through a mechanical process of cutting facets on a piece of crystal, marvelous gems are created.
To the uninitiated, faceting appears to be the apex of complexity, but that is not the case. Faceting has its complex areas, like competition cutting and design, but one does not need to enter these areas. Learning the standard cuts is within the reach of almost everybody. The primary requirements are a desire to learn and the ability to follow instructions.
To unravel the mysteries of faceting, we will describe the actual cutting process. The material is not important; the procedures are the same for amethyst, emerald, or any other gem material. There are several steps, but none of them are particularly complicated. Once you see how simple it is, you will understand that it is something you can do!
Basic Controls
There are three basic elements to arranging the facets on a gemstone. They are: 1) the angle of the cut, 2) the rotation of the gem, and 3) the depth of cut. These three settings precisely locate every facet on a gem. How to make the adjustments varies slightly from one machine to another. However, all machines work on the same principles and there are only subtle variations on how to make the settings.

This tenweek course will put you on the road to becoming a lapidary a person who Thisclass teaches the various techniques to make decorative jewelry chains
http://www.lapidary.org/Instruction/class_descriptions.htm
Class Descriptions Beadstringing, Beginning Learn how and when to knot necklaces and bracelets. Learn how to make earrings and chain necklaces. The usual course includes making a bracelet, necklace with clasp, endless strand necklace, earrings, pearls, chain necklaces (i.e. "tin cup"), and ends with show and tell. The instructors demonstrate how to work with semi precious stones, give tips and valuable information about beadstringing, and exchange ideas. You may work at your own speed within the structure of the class or you may just join the class for a refresher. Beadstringing, Advanced In order to take this class, you must know how to knot (you don't have to be an expert, but you must be able to attach clasps and do knots.) The class will do multistrand necklaces, woven bracelets, watch bands, repairs, and whatever you feel you need to know. This is good for exchanging ideas, doing more than straight stringing, and figuring how to make more complicated pieces. This class is a bit more flexible than the more structured beginning beadstringing.

66. Tuscarora Lapidary Society
By these, members may enlarge their abilities in different lapidary fieldsand become acquainted with techniques useful in special problems.
http://www.lapidary.org/general/whoweare.htm
What is Tuscarora Lapidary Society? Tuscarora Lapidary Society, Inc. (TLS) is chartered as a non-profit organization devoted to the promotion of the lapidary hobby (the cutting and polishing of gem stones), and of the arts and sciences associated with lapidary interests. We are a member of the Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Societies (EFMLS), and are affiliated with the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS). Our society has members from all walks of life, brought together by our common interest in creating beautiful, decorative, and sometimes useful items from rocks and minerals. Through discussions of experiences and techniques, our members share their knowledge and advance their skills. We have an active Skill Improvement Program (SKIP) in which members' work in several categories is judged against prescribed standards, and certificates of accomplishment are awarded. Our individual members frequently exhibit their work in the shows of other clubs and in Federation (AFMS) shows. They have received many high awards, attesting to the quality of their work. Some have also participated in national and international faceting competitions, winning high awards. The society itself often exhibits, using fine pieces by many different members. These exhibits have frequently taken "Best in Show".

Home Page Designers Collections About Us ... Online Policies Tradition of Turquoise
Turquoise is the heart of Southwestern tradition. It's color inspired legend worldwide. In fact, it was one of the first gemstones to be used for adornment. Man traveled over treacherous terrain in search of what was to some, "green gold". To Native Americans, turquoise stole its color from the sky, and when the wind blows, it is believed to be searching for the "sky stone". It was used as currency, as a talisman of good health, and most importantly as beautiful jewelry.
Turquoise is an extremely rare geological occurrence. It forms in arid regions in earth rich in copper and aluminum deposits. Over time, as water filtered down through the rock it picked up necessary elements and when conditions were just right, it left deposits in cracks and crevasses, which became veins of turquoise.

INTRODUCTION Daniel Lopacki made his first strand of beads over twenty-four years ago. From the beginning he found it a challenge to find the best techniques for making the best bead possible. In doing this he has become recognized both by his peers and the bead buying public as one of the premier bead makers in the world. Over the years Daniel has made beads from material as soft as Jet and Pipestone, to material as hard as Tourmaline. In recent years Daniel's speciality has become Opal beads and if you visit his shop you can be assured he will have some Opal beads in the works. Daniel lectured at an international bead conference in 1996 on the subjects of "Stone Bead Making" and "Opal Bead Making Techniques". In 1997 a group of individuals established a new guild for bead makers, thus the name World Beadmakers Guild. The guild chose four guild masters, Jamey Allen - Polymer Clay; Art Seymore - Furnace Glass; James Smirich - Lampwork Glass and Daniel Lopacki - Stone. The following techniques are the same that Daniel uses in his bead making. He freely admits that there are many other techniques to produce great beads, with all of these being less time consuming than his method. But if you are willing to spend the time to learn and then apply the following techniques to your bead making, you will find that there is a distinct difference in the "LOOK" of the finished product.

Reports Submitted to FAMSI:
Bradford Andrews Stone Tools and the Elite Political Economy at Epiclassic (A.D. 650-900) Xochicalco The Assemblage The elite flaked stone assemblage consists of 2,331 artifacts that were classified into items produced by core-blade, lapidary, and bifacial technologies ( Table 1 Table 2 The sample contains 1,920 core-blade artifacts ( Table 1 Table 1 ). The majority of these artifacts are standardized, parallel-sided blade segments (N = 1,314, Table 3 Table 3 ). The remaining core-blade artifacts are cores, core fragments (N = 9, Table 3 ), and artifacts related to the rejuvenation of core platforms (N = 133, Table 3 , Figure 5). Most of the core-blade artifacts appear to be items used for utilitarian tasks although a few of them like the needle-tipped segments may have had ritual significance (i.e. blood-letting). The assemblage did reflect evidence that lapidary techniques were used to make beads in the elite zone ( Figure 5 Figure 5 , g). Two eccentrics and one small projectile point ( Table 4 ) also exhibited grinding (Figure 6, shown below) that may have been applied in the elite zone.
