Introduction
The only land-locked country in South-East Asia, Laos covers an area of 235,800 square kilometres with an estimated population of 3,600,000. It has border with China in the North, Vietnam in the East, Cambodia in the South and Thailand and Burma in the West. As a country with many neighbours, Laos has often witnessed population movements across its borders at different stages of its history. These have usually been in the form of migration by farmers search of new lands, or refugees fleeing political persecution from country such as China or Vietnam. In Laos itself, internal migration by farmers and people affected by war or economic recession has also frequently occurred. However, at no times had these population movements been so massive, involving tens of thousands of people, as has been the case of refugees during the Indochina War which ended with the communist victory in 1975. Modern warfare, continuous antagonism between dissenting political groups, fear of reprisals against those on the losing side of the war and many other factors contributed to make people seek freedom both within and outside Laos. When peace negotiations began in 1973 between the Lao warring factions 750,000 of its 3,000,000 population had become displaced by the war. Since 1975, more than 300,000 Lao had sought refuge in Thailand and other countries.

History Under threat from both Siamese, Burmese and Chinese invaders in the sixteenth century, the capital of the faltering Lane Xang was moved to Vieng Chan (Vientiane) by King Setthathirat in 1560. The Burmese were not to be put off by this tactical move and finally occupied the city in 1575, holding it for seven years and finally bringing an end to the once great Lane Xang. European ambitions in the region, at the end of the nineteenth century, were of serious concern to the Siamese kings for many years. In 1893, to guarantee that the French colonialists would not challenge the country's sovereignty, Siam gave them Laos. The French - soon realising that the colony was not quite the grand acquisition they had hoped, and that the Mekong River's potential as a backdoor trade route into China had been vastly over estimated - made Laos a protectorate and left much of the running of the country to the Lao people.

It was not until 1949 that France granted Laos local autonomy. With France's withdrawal from Indochina in 1954, Laos became independent. As the war in Vietnam raged, Laos faced challenges from within: the Laotian Communist Party. In 1975, the Pathet Lao took control of the capital and declared the Lao People's Democratic Republic. Many Laotians fled to Thailand in the aftermath of the communist take-over. Vietnam has played a significant role in Laos, with troops stationed in the country. The first election was not held until 1989 and a new constitution was confirmed in 1991.

Laos History of Laos The fortunes and misfortunes of this beautiful, landlocked country have long been tied to those of its neighbors in Southeast Asia. Through the centuries, separate Lao kingdoms were overrun repeatedly by Siamese and Vietnamese conquerors: Laos did not take its present national boundaries until French rule in 1890s. After independence in 1953, it suffered through two decades of civil war, including invasion by the North Vietnam Army and saturation bombing by the U.S. Air Force, as it was drawn into the larger war based in Vietnam. In 1975, the new People's Democratic Republic deposed King Sisavang Vatthana, ending six centuries of royal rule. Economic decline and isolation following the coup left Laos one of the poorest countries in the world. Facing the starvation of its people, the government realigned the economy in the late 1980s to promote private enterprise and foreign investment. Although inflation is still high, most city dwellers are now much better off than they were previously. Prosperity has been slow to reach the rural areas, but with large amounts of foreign aid and the potential for income from the sale of hydroelectric power, the government is slowly extending services to these areas as well. Remarkably, despite all the hardships caused by foreign powers, most Lao people welcome visitors.

A Brief History of Laos In the 18th century, the Lane Xang entered a period of decline caused by dynastic struggle and conflicts with Burma, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Khmer kingdom. In the 19th century, the Siamese established hegemony over much of what is now Laos. The country was divided into principalities centered on the Luang Prabang, Vientiane, and Champassak. The Vietnamese influence was felt in Northwest Laos. In the last century, the French integrated all of Laos into the French control and directly ruled the country. The Siamese treaty of 1907 defined the present Lao boundary with Thailand. During WW2, the Japanese occupied Laos. The king was induced to declare independence from France (which was controlled by Germany). The king declared independence from France in 1945,just before Japan surrendered. In September 1945, Vientiane and Champassak united with Luang Prabang to from an independent government under the free Lao banner. In 1946, French troops reoccupied the country and conferred limited autonomy on Laos following elections for a constituent assembly. The French recognized the independence of Laos within the French Union in 1949,and Laos remained in the union until 1953. Governments of the west held power after the 1954 Geneva peace conference until 1957,whent the first coalition government, led by Prince Souvanna Phouma, was formed. The government collapsed in 1958, amidst increased polarization of the political process. Rightist forces took control of the government, and the communist insurgency resumed in 1959.

    Early History to Independence
The Laotians are descendants of Thai tribes that were pushed southward from Yunnan, China, in the 13th century and gradually infiltrated the territory of the Khmer Empire . In the mid-14th century a powerful kingdom called Lan Xang was founded in Laos by Fa Ngoun (1353-73), who is also credited with the introduction of Theravada Buddhism and much of Khmer civilization into Laos. Lan Xang waged intermittent wars with the Khmer, Burmese, Vietnamese, and Thai, and by the 17th century it held sway over sections of Yunnan, China, of S Myanmar, of the Vietnamese and Cambodian plateaus, and large stretches of N Thailand. In 1707, however, internal dissensions brought about a split of Lan Xang into two kingdoms: Luang Prabang in upper (northern) Laos and Vientiane in lower (southern) Laos. During the next century the two states, constantly quarreling, were overrun by the armies of neighboring countries. In the early 19th century Siam was dominant over the two Laotian kingdoms, although Siamese claims were disputed by Annam. After French explorations in the late 19th century Siam was forced (1893) to recognize a French protectorate over Laos, which was incorporated into the union of
