Welcome to Laos, one of the most fascinating countries in the world. The People's Democratic Republic of Laos, also known as Lao PDR is situated in the heart of French Indochina, landlocked between Thailand, Burma (Myanmar), China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Laos is one of the poorest and least visited countries in the world. The Lao people are known for their gentle polite nature and for their charming hospitality. The capital Vientiane, is one of Asia's biggest villages, sitting on the banks of the Mekong river. To the north, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the old Royal city of Luang Prabang is home to dozens of temples and a way of life that has changed little over the years. In the south the Angkor era temple of Wat Phu is one of the jewels of the Mekong. This website is the Internet's biggest source of travel information for one of the world's most fascinating countries.

Pakse - Culture P akse also spelled Pakxe, is a small town, manageable on foot. The surrounding nature, mountain and river setting, makes for a relaxing atmosphere. P akse has a number of comfortable places to stay and is a good base from which to explore the surrounding area. There are not many sightseeing attractions in the town. You can find here some nice Wats and temples. In the city, there is the Champassak Museum where you can see relics from Wat Phu as well as from the Bolaven Plateau. But the town is a good starting point for many excursions in south Laos, for example to the former royal capital of Champasak, and it is close to an extraordinary attraction: the Angkor ruins of Wat Phu. The town has one of the largest markets in the region. It is d efinitively worth a visit. Watch out for the jumping fish (the fishes in the tubs are kept alive by only a very small quantity of water so they cannot really swim. But from time to time one of them manages to gather enough energy to jump right out of the tub). The views from the riverside at the Se end of Pakse are amazing. To the south is the Mekong River with the mountains in the background and to the east, the river bends like a snake, disappearing behind the mountains as it continues to run Se. The riverside is the best place to enjoy the sunset and observe local daily life.

http://www.asiatravelling.net/laos/vientiane/vientiane_culture.htm
Vientiane (Viangchan) - Culture Tuk tuk - The traditional taxi Vientiane also spelled VIANGCHAN, largest city and capital of Laos, situated on a plain just northeast of the Mekong River. The city's central river port location in a country relying heavily on its rivers for transportation and its surrounding hinterland of intensive rice cultivation have made Vientiane the major economic centre of Laos. The city has a tropical monsoon climate, every month having an average daytime temperature above 27 o C and more than 80 percent of Vientiane's annual precipitation on the average falling in the five months May-September. The capital city and seat of government sits on a bend in the Mekong River amidst fertile alluvial plains. Despite its chequered past, Vientiane (pronounced 'Wieng Chan' by the locals) is a laid-back city with a number of interesting wats and lively markets. The most important national monument in Laos is Pha That Luang (the Great Sacred Stupa), which is a symbol of both Buddhism and Lao sovereignty. Other sights of interest include Wat Pha Kaew, a former royal temple which is now a museum; Wat Si Saket, the oldest temple in Vientiane; and the Morning Market, a sprawling collection of stalls which operate from 6 am to 6 pm. Wat Xieng Khuan is a collection of compelling Buddhist and Hindu sculptures located in a meadow, 24km (15mi) south of Vientiane. Vientiane has around 10 top-end hotels and as many guesthouses, many of them moderately expensive, but plenty of lower-priced rooms have become available in the last few years. Most of the accommodation is in central Vientiane. You can eat at cafes, street stalls, beer halls or restaurants, offering everything from rice noodles to filet mignon. For good Lao meals, try the Dong Palan Night Market on the east bank of the Nong Chan ponds.
