Reading to Infants and Children
Read to your child. Read to your baby! This is the advice I give to any caring, loving adult in any baby's or child's life. I am often confounded with the reaction I receive from this advice. I usually hear this, " No, really, what can we do to help our child?" Again, I say, "read aloud." Start this practice after the child's birth. There are even those who believe that it's never too early to start and encourage reading aloud while the baby is still in the womb. This may be a little over the top for some, but the thought of reading aloud to your child weeks after birth shouldn't be. Think of it! Studies have shown that the stimulation provided by reading aloud to babies helps build permanent brain mass. Recent brain research has made positive indications that reading to babies promotes emotional and social development in addition to boosting vocabulary and later educational success since brain circuitry is being formed. It makes sense. Begin! No excuses! This is a suggestion that can be implemented by families of any income level and literacy skills. So your baby is five years old or seven years old and not measured in months anymore. It truly is never too late or early.

Home Director Profile Annual Report ... Administrative Offices Summary Statement Dr. Charles L. Cherry begins an article in The Chronicle of Higher Education as follows: " Conventional wisdom has it that the qualified academic administrator is a professor who answers his mail." Slightly rewording "conventional wisdom," I would like to think that in addition to answering their mail, qualified administrators are educators who answer: answer their critics, answer their supporters, and answer their detractors. In order to do this, however, it seems to me administrators need to possess the following qualifications:
  • a clear and conscious recognition of their own strengths and weaknesses; the ability to see people for who they are and allow them to be; and proven ability and experience to fulfill the responsibilities of their chosen calling.
Qualified administrators are labor-intensive leaders who refine their own tastes, improve their own judgments, sharpen their own vision, and encourage others to do likewise.

The Certificate in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) Increasingly, language teachers all over the world are expected to be familiar with technology. The Internet, video, audio and a variety of different kinds of computer programs are now utilized in many language courses. Teachers use computers to plan lessons, prepare class presentations and handouts, and create activities, tests and web sites. GSLEL recognized the need for this type of training by offering elective CALL courses in the MA program for several years, and encourages students to integrate technology into their coursework and projects. By continuously expanding its involvement in technology, GSLEL now has a graduate Certificate in CALL that can be taken concurrently with MATESOL or MATFL course work, or independently by qualified teachers. The CALL Certificate equips teachers with the tools to integrate computer technology appropriately into language classrooms and programs. It is also excellent preparation for the increasing number of leadership positions in the rapidly expanding field of language education technology. Both theoretical and pedagogical insights, and practical, hands-on skills are emphasized. GSLEL maintains a strong focus on learning principles and processes, but never allows sound teaching practice to be overshadowed by technological wizardry. Major issues addressed in theory, research and practice:

IsiZulu is also known as Zulu History
This prominent group of the Nguni people takes its name from the chief who founded the royal line in the 16th century. The warrior king, Shaka, raised the tribe to prominence in the early 19th century. The complicated Zulu etiquette was refined during his reign. The current monarch of the Zulu nation is King Goodwill Zweletini. The language Zulu, or isiZulu, is understood by people from the Cape to Zimbabwe. Zulu is also the written language of the Northern Nguni. It's also a tonal language. The following overview of the language was written by B.P. Mngadi for Unesco's World Languages Report
The writing of Zulu was started by missionaries in the then Natal. The names J W Colenso, S B Stone, H Callaway and Lewis Grant are among the prominent. They taught the first people with whom they made contact, spreading the word of God, basic writing skills in Zulu. Magema Fuze, Ndiyane and William were among the very first who were taught communicative English and basic writing skills at about 1830-1841. The first Zulu Christian booklet was produced by Newton Adams, George Newton and Aldin Grout bt 1837-8 titled Incwadi Yokuqala Yabafundayo which dealt with spelling of Zulu words and the history of the Old Testament. Between 1845-1883, the first translated version of the Bible was produced in very old Zulu orthography. In 1859 the first Zulu Grammar Book by L. Grout was produced.
Its oral tradition is very rich but its modern literature is still developing. J.L Dube was the first Zulu writer (1832) though his first publication was written in English: A Talk on my Native Land. The story was a Zulu story only written in English. In 1903 he concentrated in editing the newspaper Ilanga LaseNatali. His first Zulu novel Insila kaShaka was published in 1930. We see a steady growth of publications especially novels from 1930 onwards.

Native American Language and Literacy
We have brought together some highly recommended resources for teachers, students, families and community members who are looking for good literature on or by Native Americans. There is a vast body of such literature, but it is often not readily available in school or public libraries outside of areas with large Native American populations. We hope to help make this literature and the resources that promote it more widely known and available. On these pages, we offer links to some outstanding on-line bibliographies, such as Oyate, as well as reprinted material from collections and annotated bibliographies, such as Through Indian Eyes and Roots and Branches . Almost all titles found in these bibliographies offer guidelines on appropriate grade level, subject area, and interdisciplinary applications. In addition, we have culled titles from two of these bibliographies and organized them according to subject area. We offer these titles as a means to gain them a wider audience both among Native peoples who seek good literature that reflects their experiences and among non-Natives who seek to learn the diversity and complexity of Native history and contemporary life. It contains, from a Native perspective, essays and poetry, critical reviews of more than 100 children's books by and about Indian peoples, a guide to evaluating children's books for anti-Indian bias, a recommended bibliography, and a resource section of Native publishers and organizations.

Similarly, previous research on collaborative discourse theory has rarely addressed tutorial issues even though teaching and learning are crucial components of collaboration. We help bridge the gap between these two related research threads by presenting a tutorial agent, called Paco, based on the apprenticeship model of learning, built using an application-independent collaboration manager, called Collagen. A primary contribution is to show how a variety of tutorial behaviors can be expressed as rules for generating candidate discourse acts in the framework of collaborative discourse theory.
