STORY: Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah Three celebrations, one season - So how do they relate? Kwanzaa is new; Christmas and Hanukkah are old. They're three December celebrations. Three variations on the Judeo-Christian spiritual tradition. Three ways to bond with one's family and community. Hanukkah is a secondary Jewish holiday, relatively less important than Passover and Yom Kippur. But because it coincides with the weeks before Christmas, it's achieved the status of an alternative to Christmas in many 20th-century Jewish households. As Leah Akins writes, its origins date back to about 167 B.C. A Jewish army, led by Judah the Maccabee, recaptured Jerusalem from the Greeks (who had conquered the city during the reign of Alexander the Great, some three centuries before). Judah's men tried to re-consecrate the Jewish temple by lighting its menorah (a sacramental lamp). But, as the legend tells it, there was only enough of the special ritual oil on the premises to keep the menorah lit for one day. But when they lit the lamp, it stayed lit for eight dayslong enough for the Jews to make more oil. Over the years, the miracle of the oil became the central focus of Hanukkah celebrations. Families lit one candle on each of nine consecutive nights, remembering a different aspect of the holiday and of Jewish tradition. Leaner, but not at all hungry, he said. Since Kwanzaa began the day after Christmas, he had led his South-Central Los Angeles church on a seven-day fast to focus attention on the dwindling resources of the church's food pantry for people with HIV and AIDS. In black church circles it is a touchy project, this linking of Christianity with Kwanzaa and Kwanzaa with AIDS. Not only is Robinson-Gaither mixing the religious with the cultural, but he persists in talking about HIV and AIDS and encouraging the church community to embrace homosexual and bisexual people. This is a taboo in many black churches, which are more likely to urge people to change their sexuality. "For a black minister in a mainstream denomination to do something like this is extremely meaningful," said Jeffrey King, founder and chief executive of In the Meantime, a Silver Lake-based support group for black men of all sexual orientations. "Can the AIDS crisis [among blacks] be effectively addressed? I think so. Can it be addressed without the help of the black church? I don't think so." Many of Faith United Methodist Church's 250 members have fasted for half days or for one or two days at a time, donating the food they did not use to the church's pantry. Kwanzaa a time for reflection African-American celebration encourages fellowship, commitment By Shauna Scott Rhone The Cincinnati Enquirer Thirty-five years ago, a California activist now known as Dr. Maulana Karenga searched for a unifying solution to help his community heal after the 1965 Los Angeles riots. Dr. Karenga created Kwanzaa in 1966, in hopes of strengthening family ties and community cooperation among African-Americans. Using African symbols and the Kiswahili language, he shaped a cultural holiday to remind participants of the contributions of people with African heritage living around the world. Spread over the seven days between the day after Christmas and New Year's Day, each night of Kwanzaa was dedicated to discussing Kwanzaa's seven principles (called Nguzo Saba). The principles were derived from Kawaida, the philosophy of African thought and practice. They highlight subjects such as cooperative economics, creativity, self-determination and faith. This year's racial unrest in Cincinnati underscores why Kwanzaa still is relevant 35 years after its creation, experts say.
