Iron Civilization of Kaya Kingdom By Choe Yong-shik Staff Reporter Archeology is a field of study that helps piece together our history through the discovery of artifacts. As you read this story, the history of an ancient kingdom is being reconstructed. Kaya Kingdom (42-562) was a loose confederation of six Kaya states located west of the Naktong River, which is presently in South Kyongsang Province. This was around the Christian era, the time of King Kim Su-ro, who is the forefather of the Kimhae-based Kims, including President Kim Dae-jung and Acting Prime Minister Kim Jong-pil. The name kayagum, the 12-string zither or laid harp, also originated from the kingdom. However, Kaya Kingdom was overshadowed by its neighboring big powers of Paekche and Shilla and its historical significance has often been neglected as a fourth nation that failed to survive in the Three Kingdoms period. Archeological findings of recent decades in the region have been put into an established museum, showing convincingly that the once-forgotten kingdom retained a sophisticated civilization and a strong cultural tradition. The Kimhae National Museum was opened last Wednesday in the capital of Pon (Original) Kaya, west of Pusan with some 1,300 unearthed items originating from the Neolithic to Iron Ages. The collection includes stone tools, earthen wares, bronze mirrors and other ornaments and weapons. Half of the collection is devoted to iron products such as human armor, horse armor, gold-inlaid swords and horse wares for military use.

Korea was an ancient kingdom on a peninsula of the coast of eastern Asia. Like Japan, its neighbor, its distant past is legendary and is dated to 2333 BC. Its known history as a political entity dates to 57 BC. Korea has been influenced by both China and Japan. Its early philosophy and religion and system of writing came from China - though in 1443 a new alphabetic system of writing replaced the Chinese system. Its relation to Japan has something in common with that of England and Ireland. Japanese invasions occurred at several times in Korea's history (as well as invasions from the mainland, including China, the Mongols and the Manchus. A Korean dynasty was founded in 1392 which lasted until 1905. Like Japan, the kingdom of Korea tried to remain isolated from the western world and only broke down its isolation in 1876 when the Japanese, who had already opened up to the outside world, forced diplomatic relations on the Koreans. From this time begins the modern history of Korea in which the Japanese, Chinese and Russians extended their various conflicts to Korea. The Japanese influence in Korea grew until in 1910 they annexed the country. Until 1945 they ruled it as a colony, much as England had ruled Ireland. During this period Japanese filled all the important government positions down to village headmen. Some Koreans were taken to Japan as slave laborers and forced prostitutes during the 1930s. Their descendants are still there, and still denied citizenship.

The Korean Peninsula extends southward from the northeastern section of the vast Asian continent, spanning 1,000 kilometers north to south. UC students may study—in English or Korean—in a full range of courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences, and business and economics; additional fields are available to students proficient in Korean. EAP programs at three prestigious universities in Seoul provide practical, appealing options to any student interested in Asia as well as to all students specifically interested in Korea.
