81. Animal World: Komodo Dragon
Adult Komodo's are known to eat the eggs and even their young when theyare in need of food! Look at the size of the komodos' forked tongue!
http://www10.brinkster.com/animal/komodo.htm
Color Brown/Gray
Size The average male komodo reaches a length of around seven to eight feet, whilst the females are shorter at around five to seven feet. The record for the largest dragon ever seen is ten feet long, weighing in excess of 365 lbs.
Life Span In the wild komodo's can live up to 50 years old, whereas in zoos they live to around 20 years.
Distribution The komodo dragon can only be found on three islands in Indonesia, these are, Flores, Komodo and Rinca.
Prey Komodo's eat a wide range of food found on the island including, deer, pigs, smaller komodo dragon's, rodents, insects, lizards, birds and eggs. Scientists believe that they used to eat pygmy elephants, which are now extinct.
Swimmers? Yes. komodo's have been known to swim up to 1.5 miles in search of prey on neighboring islands. They will swim there and eat all they can before swimming back to their own territory. Komodo dragons were not discovered by westerners until 1912, and ever since their habitat has been threatened by the human population on the island. Despite this the komodo population has stayed stable, although they are listed as a vulnerable species on the World Conservation Union's 'Red List of Threatened Animals'.

Title: Komodo, The Living Dragon (revised edition) Author: Dick Lutz and J. Marie Lutz 1997. Dimi Press, Salem. OR 97302. 193 pp. ISBN 0-931625-27-0. Softbound. Reviewed by: Brian Jones About Amazon.com Reprinted from the Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Society [32(7):153, July 1997] Whenever I meet someone who isn't a reptile enthusiast and the subject of family pets comes up, the reaction I get is predictable. "What kind of pets to you have?" "Oh, three cats and about 60 lizards," is my usual reply. "Lizards?! Wow! Do you have any of those Komodo dragons?" is the question that often follows. Komodo dragons are the only lizard many people can name. And to some, this infamous varanid ranks right up there with the great white shark or the alligator as a malicious, calculating man-eater just waiting to prey on anyone unfortunate enough to cross its path. One can easily see how these animals could gain such a reputation. Inhabiting four of the Lesser Sunda Islands east of Bali and south of Borneo in the independent Republic of Indonesia (formerly the Dutch East Indies), they existed only in legend to most of the world until their official "discovery" in 1910. The dragons of Komodo should be seen as they truly aremagnificent reptiles that just happen to be at the top of the food chain in an island ecosystem where large carnivorous mammals failed to establish themselves. In the second edition of their book

The Denver Zoo Komodo Dragons claim their domain at the world's largest indoor Komodo Dragon habitat at the Denver Zoo. Komodo Dragons are the largest lizard in the reptile family and have made the exhibit their permanent home. Odoe, Hecktor, Koko and Castor reside in the dragon dwelling where visitors can get nose to nose with the man-eating reptiles, safely protected by inches of glass.
Komodo Dragons are opportunistic feeders, and fear nothing. Komodos have been known to hunt man and other dragons, and will dig up fresh graves on occasion. Adult Komodos are formidable predators, able to hunt and overpower wild boar, deer and even a 1,000 pound water buffalo, often devouring 80% of their body weight in one meal.
The Zoo's Primate Panorama Exhibit is a seven-acre, $14 million world-class facility with 29 different species of primates, from a 6-ounce pygmy marmoset to a 610 pound gorilla, all playing, swinging and lounging in environments that feel like natural habitats. Eleven squirrel monkeys from the exhibit were from a recently retired research troop with NASA, including Space Man, an 18 year old monkey who was the first primate to ride the space shuttle!
Rain or shine, blizzard or balmy, the Denver Zoo offers fun for every season. The Zoo is home to nearly 4,000 animals representing over 700 species. From Tropical Discovery, an indoor rainforest habitat, to the Humboldt Penguin Exhibit, the Denver Zoo has something for everyone.

They are brown in color and often have dark markings across their bodies. They range from 7.5-8.5 feet in length. Males are larger than females and weigh up to 300 lbs, where females can weigh up to 200 lbs. Their long, whip-like tails, which are often longer than their bodies, are used are rudders when swimming. Komodos are capable of running at very fast speeds for short distances and are good swimmers, but are sluggish in cooler waters which lower their body temperatures. (C) 1999 John Sullivan Their diet consists of deer, goat, boar, snakes, birds, carrion, and at times they will even eat other komodos. Like a shark, they lose and replace their teeth every once in awhile. Prey is killed by the bacteria infested saliva found in the komodo's mouth. Komodo dragons are solitary and come together only when feeding and mating. The mating season lasts from July to August. A female will lay a clutch of eggs (usually about 20) in a burrow with many different entrances to confuse predators. The eggs which are soft and leathery will hatch within 8-9 months. The young komodo dragons will spend much of the beginning of their lives in trees where they will feed on insects until they reach a stable size. They live up to 20 years in the wild, though many scientists predict that they can live to be 50.

KOMODO DRAGONS: Do they breathe fire? If you wanted to design a fire-breathing dragon, you could use the Komodo dragon as a model. Its looks are similar to the mythical fire-breathing dragon. A long neck and head, short body, long thick tail, strong legs and long claws are traits of the Komodo dragon everything you might think of, except fire. Komodo dragons are the largest of the monitor lizards. The largest adult male ever seen was more than 10 feet long and weighed 365 pounds. Komodo dragons are reptiles. They are found on a few small Indonesian islands: Komodo, Rintja, Flores and Padar. Because of the isolations of these islands, we did not know about Komodo dragons until 1912. These lizards have enormous appetites. They will eat water buffalo, deer, pigs and birds. Younger Komodo dragons will eat insects, snakes, rodents and eggs. A Komodo dragon that weighs 101 pounds can eat a 90-pound pig. The Komodo dragon uses its sense of smell to find meals. They can catch and eat smaller animals. When it locates a large, more dangerous animal, it will bite it, leaving behind deadly germs from its saliva. The animal it has bitten becomes ill from the infections over a period of days. The dragon follows it around until it dies. Then it eats its meal. This saves the dragon from having to spend extra energy running to catch its prey.

[Original headline: Monitor lizard spotted near lake Attempts to capture 5-foot reptile seen by couple in Brown County near Lake Lemon are unsuccessful It's becoming a real jungle out there this summer. First a piranha-like fish was caught in Lake Griffy. Then a 12-foot python was found slithering around Yellowwood State Forest. Now a 5-foot monitor lizard has been spotted lounging around Lake Lemon. So far, all the sightings have been at the Brown County end of the lake, with one of the county's animal control officers sighting and pursuing it a few days ago but being unable to corral it. A couple who live by the lake first spotted the beast, sunning itself along the Indiana Rail Road tracks. Monitors love to lounge in the sun. Sylvia and David Lewis tried unsuccessfully to net it, then called the Brown County Sheriff's Department, which sent animal control officer John Houts to try to catch it. He saw the giant lizard and likewise tried to catch it — for several hours, in fact. But he also failed.

WHAT LIES BENEATH BOOK OF SHADOWS: BLAIR WITCH PROJECT PART 2 CHERRY FALLS - The coolest and smartest thing about this movie is that it goes against everything we have learned in past horror films and that is because in a small town, a serial killer stalks teenage girls who are still virgins. Now, we all know that if you do drugs , sleep around etc. you are going to die.....well, not in this movie. The idea in this movie is to shag and lose your virginity and then you are safe. Okay, enough about shagging and virgins, the fact is that this movie was a very pleasant suprise. I went to the theatre expecting an average slasher flick and what I got was an above average slasher flick. Michael Biehn, Brittany Murphy, Jay Mohr, Amanda Anka Candy Clark are the stars and the script is pretty lame and slow to start with but after viewing the last half it was well worth the wait. This movie is nothing new to horror fans, with its usual pretty girls running, screaming and bleeding, but man....it's still FUN !!!

Where: Komodo Island, Indonesia
Appearance: The last of the dinosaurs - a giant 8ft lizard with big teeth and bad breath
Watch out for: The teeth, it can rip the foot of a showbiz spouse in seconds...
On the island of Komodo , a tiny microcosm in the sea seperating the Flores from the Indian Ocean , an unusual creature of myth and legend still roams the land.
The Komodo known as the Ora Habits
A Komodo's would never make a great violinist, its hearing is terrible, but its amphibian eyes can see up to ¼ of a mile away. Its large yellow forked tongue can break down and analyse smell in the air, and they can sense a deer up to 3 miles away. Its feet sound like a "muffled machine gun" according to some experts, which alert their prey seconds before making the final kill. After gnawing down a deer or two, the smelly dragon keeps bits of meat in its teeth which are highly septic not to mention disgusting! When there's nothing else to eat they often go for each other, the larger dragons eating babies or young Komodo so they're not the nicest of dinner guests.

Leishmania: Shoo Fly, Don't Mutilate Me
Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis Mucocutaneous Leishmaniasis See more images of Leishmaniasis Sand Flies (Lutzomyia spp) are commonly considered a nuisance for their blood-sucking habits. Some species of this group, however, are much more than a nuisance. Their bite can result in mutilation and even death. Leishmaniasis - also known as "kala-azar", "black fever" or "black sickness" - is a group of parasitic diseases transmitted by approximately 30 of the existing 500 species of phlebotomine (blood sucking) sand flies. The parasite, a group of protazoa, Leishmania spp, is the causative agent of the disease. Like mosquitoes, only the adult females suck blood, and therefore only the females transmit the disease. Cutaneous forms of the disease (those affecting the skin) normally produce skin ulcers on the exposed parts of the body such as the face, arms and legs. The disease can produce a large number of lesions - sometimes up to 200 - causing serious disability and permanent scarring. Autoinoculation (the process of a victim re-infecting him/herself) of various parts of the body with the fingers can occur from the cutaneous lesions. In mucocutaneous forms of leishmaniasis, (those affecting the mucous and skin) lesions can lead to partial or total destruction of the mucus membranes of the nose, mouth and throat cavities.

April 9, 2003 go Advanced Search TODAY'S NEWS EXPLORE ... PAST ISSUES FEATURE ARTICLE March 1999 issue The Komodo Dragon On a few small islands in the Indonesian archipelago, the world's largest lizard reigns supreme By Claudio Ciofi
A deer nimbly picks its way down a path meandering through tall savanna grasses. It is an adult male of its species, Cervus timorensis , weighing some 90 kilograms (about 200 pounds). Also known as a Rusa deer, the animal knows this route well; many deer use it frequently as they move about in search of food. This Rusa's home is the Indonesian island of Komodo, a small link in a chain of islands separating the Flores Sea from the Indian Ocean [see illustration ]. Most wildlife find survival a struggle, but for the deer on Komodo, and on a few of the nearby islands, nature is indeed quite red in tooth and claw. This deer is about to encounter a dragon. The Komodo dragon, as befits any creature evoking a mythological beast, has many names. It is also the Komodo monitor, being a member of the monitor lizard family, Varanidae , which today has but one genus, Varanus . Residents of the island of Komodo may call it the ora. Among some on Komodo and the islands of Rinca and Flores, it is buaja darat (land crocodile), a name that is descriptive but inaccurate; monitors are not crocodilians. Others call it biawak raksasa (giant monitor), which is quite correct; it ranks as the largest of the monitor lizards, a necessary logical consequence of its standing as the biggest lizard of any kind now living on the earth.
