KINDERGARTEN
How to help your child get ready for Kindergarten....... When a child starts kindergarten, parents sometimes worry that they have not done enough to prepare him/her academically, socially, or emotionally. To address that concern, here are a few thoughts. 1. Every time you listened to your child tell you something, you taught him how to tune in to his teacher in class. 2. Every time you read to your child, you helped her take the first steps needed to learn to read with the teacher. 3. Every time you took the time to explain something to your child, you helped promote his interest in learning. 4. Every time you hugged and kissed your child, you helped her know that she is worthy of love and respect from other adults and children in her class. 5. Every time you solved a conflict calmly with your child, you helped him learn that he can resolve conflicts peacefully with his classmates. 6. Every time you set limits for your child, you helped her learn to reach her potential within the limits set by kindergarten teachers. 7. Every time you allowed your child to make her own decisions, you helped her learn to be an independent thinker at school.

THE GINGERBREAD MAN
The Gingerbread Man Theme
The classic story of the Gingerbread Man can serve as a child-centered theme to build a total curriculum around. Appropriate any time of the year, use these activities to teach, practice and apply concepts in language arts through reading, writing, phonics, and children's literature. This is a collection of activities shared by teachers with teachers. Some are original and many have been passed down from teacher to teacher. I thank teachers everywhere for sharing and am happy to be able to pass the ideas on to you for use in your classroom. I know these ideas will inspire additional games and activities as you use them. Many of the activities are designed in a game format, played either by partners or in small groups. Others are designed to be used in a whole class arrangement while some are for independent practice. Many of the activities are also appropriate for homework to give the students additional review of basic skills. This unit is filled with Blackline Masters to make it easy for you to use these activities tomorrow and then again and again year after year. It is recommended that you duplicate many of the games on heavy duty card stock, and laminate for repeated use. Addresses and phone numbers for additional resources pertaining to the Gingerbread Man theme and a bibliography are included.

meet them where they are and guide them through the early literacy levels to construct adequate foundations for subsequent learning. Engaging these children in reading experiences appropriate to their current levels of literacy is the best approach to closing the gap between their skills and those of their more reading-advantaged peers. For the early elementary students with the lowest performance this means going back all children, including those at risk, learn to enjoy, value, and benefit from schooling. The High/Scope method can and does teach students to read, write, and in general, become productive and well-adjusted citizens.

After kindergarten students are assessed at midyear, adjustments must bemade to instruction. Providing intensive, targeted, reading activities.

Accelerated Reading Instruction Data from Assessment Instruments Identification is made using data from the assessment instrument(s) selected from the Commissioner's Approved List of Early Reading Diagnostic Assessments or other comprehensive, research-based reading assessment tools selected by a district-level committee. Data from these assessment instrument(s) should be the primary criterion for student placement in an early intervention program and students should receive help in the areas assessed on these instruments: phonological awareness, decoding, fluency and comprehension. Identifying students for Accelerated Reading Instruction Accelerated Reading Instruction should begin for kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 immediately after the students have been assessed and shown to have concepts "still developing". A comprehensive program in grades kindergarten, Grade 1, and Grade 2 should provide instruction in ALL critical areas of reading - phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, decoding, fluency, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension. The district or charter school's early reading assessment should be the primary criteria for placement in an early intervention program. Intervention efforts should be in place throughout the school year and may include summer programs for students who are still having difficulty at the end of the spring semester.

JumpStart Typing Across-The-Curriculum Products JumpStart Kindergarten JumpStart 4 ... Additional Information About Today's Products Learning is a natural thing. It is a drive almost as fundamental as primary drives such as the thirst and hunger drives. People seek to learn from the moment they are born. Initially learning is more a matter of exploration feeling, touching, and trying just about anything and everything within reach. Free-form learning is an enjoyable and rewarding experience. However, as infants grow into children we start to structure their natural curiosity-learning. If we impose too much structure, we can make learning a not -enjoyable experience and discourage it. Knowledge Adventure (KA) JumpStart (JS) programs do a great job of disguising structured, directed learning as an enjoyable, engaging learning experience. The JumpStart series does this by taking advantage of what computers can do to immerse children in the learning process. Each JS program has a variety of activities. That allows the child to pick and choose which activity he or she wants to play in. The play and commensurate learning is self-paced. The interactive choice of activity and self-paced learning combine to provide a somewhat free-form learning environment.

Emerging Reading and Word-Identification Skills
Most children in kindergarten cannot read and write, although clearly some can. Most children who cannot read have nonetheless developed many language and cognitive skills that form the foundation for learning to read and write. These children tend to come from families that have provided them with many rich, early experiences with literacy. Other children, often referred to as "at risk," have had fewer such experiences; these youngsters depend heavily on teachers and schools to help them become readers and writers. A full discussion of emerging literacy skills would need to consider many topics. However, since the subject of this paper is word-identification instruction, it seems important to focus on two areas specifically related to success in that area: familiarity with print and phonemic awareness. Familiarity with Print
Concepts of Print.
Children who have had many experiences with language, especially the experience of having someone read to them regularly, may have some concept of what printed words and letters are. They may realize that the print on a page is the source of the text information needed for reading or know that a reader looks at print from left to right. These concepts, referred to as concepts of print, are important for success in learning to read (Adams, 1990), and children who have had limited preschool experiences with printed language will need to be taught them. Teaching concepts of print should be approached systematically. After reading a favorite book, such as a Big Book version of Robert Kalan's
