A brief History of Football in Kenya Football was introduced in Kenya at the beginning of the 20 th century by British settlers. Kenyans naturally took to the sport due to the simplicity of its nature. In the 1940s and 50s, The Kenya national team competed in what was then known as the Gossage cup that pitted the three East African countries. Among the stalwarts from that era were Shem Chimoto, Elijah Lidonde and Peter Oronge. Club teams competed in the Remmington Cup organised by Kenya's then supreme soccer body the Football Association (FA). Teams from Caost Province in Particular Mwenge and Feisal, dominated the local scene, producing classy players like Kadir Farah, Ahmed Breik, Ali Sungura and Ali Kadjo. . In 1960, the Kenya Football Federation was formed to govern Football in the country. Later the Confederation of East and central African countries was formed to organize regional tournaments. Kenya Breweries made history in 1973 when they became the first Kenyan side to reach the Semi finals of a continenetal event. They reached the Semi Finals of the Champions cup, beating Ismailia of Egypt in the quarters. In 1975, Kenya won the East and Central Africa challenge cup (CECAFA Cup) for the first time ever. The arrival of German coach Bernard Zgoll in th early severties heraldes a new era in kenyan Football. Besides coaching the national team succesfully, Zgoll set up a series of national youth development centres all over the country. These centres produced several excellent players among them Sammy Owino Kempes, Dick Anyanga, Wilberforce Mulamba, Sammy Taabu, Sammy Onyango and Jared Ingutia just to mention a few.

In 1498 a Portuguese explorer called Vasco De Gama landed on the shores of Mombasa. The purpose of his exploration was to spread the Christian faith and to further expand Portugal’s trading area. His arrival to Mombasa was met which much hostility among the local people. However, he made a very important ally, the King of Malindi.
Inside the fort A dhow returning The Portuguese knew that Mombasa was essential in order to successfully trade their goods; hence in 1592 they used their power to make the King of Malindi the Sultan of Mombasa. In doing so the locals consequently had no choice but to obey the orders of the Sultan, which in turn came from the Portuguese Government. Mombasa became Portugal’s main trading centre along the East Coast of Africa. This led to the construction of a monumental fort that still stands today known as Fort Jesus. The Fort served as the main hub for trading goods, a prison for slaves, and most importantly protecting the Portuguese from conflicts with locals and threatening foreign battalions. A side view of Fort Jesus

Slavery was the major activity that took place at that time, where local slaves were exchanged for goods from visiting ships that often came from European countries. The trading of spices, cotton and coffee, which were cultivated and grown in the rich fertile soils of the town’s farms, is one if the reasons Mombasa was a popular destination for seafarers at the time. Captured slaves were forced to work on these farms in extremely harsh and inhumane conditions.

The Kenya Project began in 1990 with a man named Sam Barnett, who visited the village of Nyakorere in Kisii District while travelling through Kenya. Here he found Nyakorere PAG (Pentecostal Assemblies of God) Secondary School, a harambee school which had been constructed by the community and was funded through local donations. Over the next few years, Sam and a number of friends from his college (Trinity Hall) visited Nyakorere. Many stayed for several months to teach in the school, which was lacking government-trained teachers in many subjects. Those remembered well by the locals are Sam himself, Laurie, Nick Rand - who has since attempted to write a book about the area - and Lisa, who eventually married the son of Pastor Marko Ayunga in 1997. Each visitor also brought money to aid the school improve its facilities, for instance by building the main structure of a science laboratory. The school was also encouraged to raise more money itself, a matching donation being promised by the UK students. In , the project evolved to a set up similar to its existence today. It expanded to cover more schools and sent more project workers, who were now recruited from any college in the university. It also became part of

Mount Kenya, at 5199 m, is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania at 5895 m is the highest. The central twin peaks, Batian (5199 m) and Nelion (5188 m) can only be accessed by climbing, whereas the third highest peak, Point Lenana (4985 m) can usually be ascended by a suitably equipped walker. The mountain was gazetted a National Park in 1949.
When you visit Mount Kenya, you visit an absolutely unique environment. It is actually so unique that it has been declared an International Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The high altitude equatorial environment has led to the evolution of several specially adapted species of plants, animals and birds. In the 700 square kilometre park are 81 plant species found only on Mt. Kenya, as well as a wide variety of wildlife.
GEOLOGY
Mount Kenya is an extinct volcano, 50 km in diameter at the base, that was built up by intermittent volcanic eruptions 3.1 to 2.6 million years ago. What remains now as the central peaks was the core of the volcano, all the crater rim having been eroded away. Originally the summit of Mount Kenya must have reached well over 6,500 metres.
Lying only 20 km from the equator, there are nevertheless numerous glaciers because of the high altitude climate, although these all have receded significantly in the past two decades

City Weekends ... Discussion Boards Mount Kenya Mount Kenya is the country's highest mountain. Sitting astride the equator its icy summit reaches to 5199m (17,058 ft). All of the mountain above the 3200m contour forms a national park. In fact the mountain consists of three principal zones; the rocky peak area, actually an eroded volcanic plug, with its mantle of glaciers and snowfields; the alpine zone with its distinctive giant vegetation; and the vast gentle lower slopes drenched in mountain forest and bamboo jungle. It is no wonder that this remote majestic wonderland was considered as God's domain by awed farmers at its foothills. Many rivers flow from the perpetual snows, among them the mighty Tana, Kenya's largest and longest river and source of much of Kenya's electricity supply. Most visitors are content to marvel at the mountain's beauty but some will want to attempt to reach the peaks; a feat requiring considerable rock climbing skill. But the mountain's lesser peaks and glaciers can be scaled and walked by the fit and the adventurous. Point Lenana, 4985m, can be easily reached. In fact the majority of visitors go to the mountain to enjoy the walking and especially the high level hut-to-hut hike round the mountain with its humbling vistas.
