Country Flag ... Travel Warning History Kenya's present population of more than 27 million is the result of incursions and migrations of differing groups over the past 1,500 years. For visitors, this striking cultural mix is one of the pleasures of visiting the country. For Kenyans, it has, in the past, presented some problems as various groups vied for power and territory. Culture There are more than 70 tribal groups among the Africans in Kenya. Distinctions between many of them are blurred - western cultural values are becoming more ingrained and traditional values are disintegrating. Yet, even though the average African may have outwardly drifted away from tribal traditions, tribe is still the most important part of a person's identity.

culture history lake nakuru ... tsavo Travel to Kenya with Albatros Travel The first of many footprints to be stamped on Kenyan soil were left way back in 2000 BC by nomadic tribes from Ethiopia. A second group followed around 1000 BC and occupied much of central Kenya. The rest of the ancestors of the country's medley of tribes arrived from all over the continent between 500 BC and 500 AD. The Bantu-speaking people (such as the Gusii, Kikuyu, Akamba and Meru) arrived from West Africa while the Nilotic speakers (Maasai, Luo, Samburu and Turkana) came from the Nile Valley in southern Sudan. As tribes migrated throughout the interior, Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula and Shirazis from Persia (now Iran) settled along the East African coast from the 8th century AD onwards. Drawn by the whiff of spices and money, the Portuguese started sniffing around in the 15th century. After venturing further and further down the western coast of Africa, Vasco da Gama finally rounded the Cape of Good Hope and headed up the continent's eastern coast in 1498. Seven years later, the Portuguese onslaught on the region began. By the 16th century, most of the indigenous Swahili trading towns, including Mombasa, had been either sacked or occupied by the Portuguese - marking the end of the Arab monopoly of Indian Ocean trade. The Portuguese settled in for a long period of harsh colonial rule, playing one sultan off against another. But their grip on the coast was always tenuous because their outposts had to be supplied from Goa in India. Control of the coast was won back by the Arabs in 1720.

Rugby was introduced into Kenya at the beginning of the 20th century by British settlers. Indeed before the 1970s rugby in Kenya was played mainly by people of European origin. The Kenya cup featured teams belonging to exclusive clubs such as Nairobi Sports club, Impala , Nondescripts , Kenya Harlequins and a farmers team from Eldoret. Mean Machine RFC a team representing the University of Nairobi was the first team consisting mainly of indigenous Kenyans to compete in the Kenya cup in 1977. Mwamba RFC formed in 1978 was Kenya's first independent team. The 1980s saw a significant rise in the popularity of the sport. However it was mainly concentrated in the Capital City Nairobi. Virtually all the teams participating in the Kenya cup and other KRFU organized tournaments were based in Nairobi. The sport was hardly played in any of the schools outside of Nairobi. Mwamba was the team of the early to mid eighties and 1983 is a year most Mwamba fans will never forget. That year captain Tom Oketch led a star studded Mwamba team which included the likes of Jimmy Owino, Arthur Kibisu, Pritt Nyandatt, Andy Kimwele and Andy Mwenesi among others to win the Kenya cup in grand style. The 4 th All Africa games was Kenya's first chance at testing their strength against other national teams in a competitive tournament. Kenya finished 3

Executive Committee Members The Junior Golf Foundation The Kenya Open Golf Championship was started in 1967. The idea of the championship originated from Peter Thompson, an Australian Golfer, and then from a former Kenya Golf Union President, "Champ" Sullivan. The event takes place at the Muthaiga Golf Club, home of the Kenya Golf Union with the exception of 1968 when the event was held at Karen Country Club and in 1976 when the competition was not played. The Kenya Open is the oldest Championship on the African Leg of the P.G.A European Challenge Tour. The events organisation is the sole responsibility of the Kenya Golf Union. In the past the Union contracted out the organisation to professional organisations mainly between 1978 and 1983 after which a single sponsor Benson & Hedges provided the bulk of the financing and as a result the Championship was labelled the Benson and Hedges Kenya Open. In 1984 the principle sponsor was B.A.T (K)Ltd. and was labelled the "555" Kenya Open. From 1991 the event was renamed the Standard Chartered Kenya Open. The bank was the sponsor of the Championship. After 1993 the organisation of the Kenya Open was turned over to Kenya Open Golf Limited, an independent liability company formed in 1992 by the Kenya Golf Union. The company's sole purpose is to organise the Kenya Open Golf Championship on a "permanent and Professional basis". The Union has 48 shares and the country's ten major golf clubs are allocated 40 shares. The remaining 12 shares are available for allocation to clubs which reach the level of having 150 male, golf playing, full members.

Introduction
As a focal point of nationalism in Kenya, KANU is consistently associated with the history of anti-colonialism, the struggle for independence and devotion to the building of a united, peaceful and prosperous nation, in which every Kenyan enjoys political freedom, social justice and equal opportunities. In outlining the evolution of KANU as a political party, it must be appreciated several formal and informal political organizations preceded it in serving as an expression of the same spirit the KANU stood for on its formation in 1960. Upon formation, KANU became the party that best exemplified the aspirations of the national movement for independence, formed the first African Government of independent Kenya and therefore, laid the firm foundation for the present and future of Kenya.

quotes about history key testimonies featuring history Historical references are mainly about how the Sabaot came to inhabit Mount Elgon and the long-term conflict with the Bukusu. Several narrators have clear memories of life under colonial rule, and the fight for independence. They describe how things changed after independence. Many highlight their exploitation by white settlers and the loss of land, but more than one paints a positive picture of the colonialists, and several feel that white oppression was exchanged for worse oppression by the Bukusu. Some feel the settlers supported the Bukusu, and so increased Sabaot vunerability to Bukusu dominance. Several remember missionaries introducing Christianity and education, and the unease many felt about the threat this posed to their culture. One narrator talks about the Second World War and how some Sabaot participated: "Some were not lucky to come back. But many of them came back with money. People who were originally poor were able to buy livestock…. The Second World War gave us an opportunity to send people out to other communities so that they could see how other people do their things. [It] opened up the eye of our people." (Kenya 15)

Michael and Elaine Harrison A BRIEF HISTORY of the BORANA LODGE In 1918, at the end of the First World War, Will Powys was demobilized from the East African Mounted Rifles after four years of distinguished service, which took him over much of German East Africa (which became Tanganyika and then Tanzania), and the eastern part of the Belgian Congo. He returned to his pre-war job of managing a ranch for the Cole family who were some of Kenya's earliest pioneers. The British Government was trying to encourage farmers to settle on and develop some of the wide, empty areas in the highlands of Kenya. The African population in much of the country was very sparse and the Government had created large, empty buffer areas between the various tribes to try to cut down on inter-tribal and inter-clan warfare. When Will Powys heard that plots of farmland were available to veterans, to be drawn from the hat, he immediately applied for his chance.

About Kenya Bible Institute Board of Directors Daughter Churches ... Home Dr. William K. "Bill" Ghrist, with wife June, (shown right) was a successful ophthalmologist in Glendale, California. In 1969 he was led of the Lord to go to Mombasa, Kenya. He saw a great need there. Only about 10% of the country was Christian and medical facilities were poor. Dr. Ghrist established a home and began treating the people of Kenya out of his residence. Only those that could afford it were asked to pay. Dr. Ghrist began telling the people of Kenya about Jesus. They listened because they knew he cared about them. Now almost 20% of the country is considered Christian. Dr. Ghrist founded the "Lighthouse for Christ Mission". Initially, although an ophthalmologist, he had to perform under the classification of and was chartered as a general doctor. He would send out letters to other Christian ophthalmologists asking them to help him with his work. Dr. Roger DeHaven, an ophthalmologist in Texas, received such a letter. In 1971 he met Dr. Ghrist and was asked to come to Mombasa, Kenya to participate. Dr. DeHaven accepted this challenge. Dr. DeHaven was profoundly moved by the City of Mombasa, and the people of Kenya. There were only 5 Kenyan employees at the mission and no missionaries then. Some of these employees have remained with the mission and are currently working as surgical assistants, pastoring churches, or teaching at the Bible Institute. Eventually as the work in the eye clinic grew, it became necessary to build additional housing so that the mission director and medical director could move out of the main residence home to create more space in the eye clinic. Dr. Ghrist's original residence then became the
