of diversity Based on the fourth chapter of An Amateur's Guide to the Planet , "Giraffes by the Roadside: Kenya and Tanzania and lessons on our love-hate relationship to Africa," pp. 73-98.
    Students will be able:
    • To learn that Africa is a massive continent. Its size and varied landscape make it home to many cultures.
    • To understand that even within Kenya, there are great differences between the people of the Swahili coast, the agricultural tribes of the central area, and the Masai herders of the west.
    • To recognize that Kenya's proximity to Somalia creates problems for Kenyans, Western tourists and wildlife.
    Directions
    • Have students begin with information on planning a trip to Africa (p. 73) and proceed to a visit to the Masai people (pp. 80-81).
    • Read about Joel, a guide who belongs to the Kikuyu tribe (pp. 81-83).
    • Read "A good book in Africa: I" (box, p. 85).
    • Visit the Swahili coast (pp. 86-90).
    • Finally, read "Kenya's summer of growing discontent" (box, p. 77).

Mount Koh There are many languages spoken in Kenya. Kiswahili is the proper language but is only spoken on the coast. The rest of Kenya uses "kitchen Swahili" which is a very basic language with no use of past or future tenses. While you can probably get along very well speaking English it is always fun to know some phrases. Iko wapi choo? This means where is the bathroom? And Habari? This means how are you? While Kiswahili is the national language, English is the official language. Other languages spoken are Gikuyu, Kikamba, dholuo, Kiluhya, Kalenjin and many more, each of which have several dialects. The climate of Kenya varies from the tropical to the temperate. This is due to the fact that Kenya is divided into two almost equal parts by the equator. Kenya's tropical climate is moderated by altitude, which ranges from sea level to 5199m. at the snow peaked Mount Kenya. The climate is pleasant and generally agreeable. There is plenty of sunshine all year round. Rainfall is heavy around April and May . The coast of Kenya is humid, the average annual temperature ranges from about 76 F in June and July to about 82F in March and April. The highlands are relatively temperate and the Lake Victoria region is tropical. Kenya's main natural resource is its land. Only 11 percent of the land is suitable of agriculture. About one-third of that total is used to grow crops; the remainder is used for grazing. The northern two-thirds of Kenya is mostly desert or semidesert.

    PROVINCES AND DISTRICTS
The eight provinces in Kenya range in geographical size from the small Nairobi Province to the much larger Eastern and Rift Valley Provinces. The Provinces also range in population from the densely populated Nairobi Province, to these sparsely populated North East. The eight provinces are: Central, Coast, Eastern, Nairobi, North East, Nyanza, Rift Valley and Western Province. Each Province in turn is subdivided into districts.
Kenya is located astride the Equator on the East Coast of Africa. It borders Somalia, Ethiopia and Sudan in the north, Uganda in the west, Tanzania in the south, and the Indian Ocean in the East. It covers an area of 583,000 sq, km (225,000 sq. miles). Kenya's capital city is Nairobi with a population of approximately 1.4 million people. The other major towns are Mombasa the main port on the Indian Ocean with an estimated population of 1 million and Kisumu on Lake Victoria with an estimated population of 400,000 people.
    PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY
Ancient rocks form the backbone of Africa, including the western part of Kenya. The Rift Valley, a great gash in the Earth's crust, cuts across the country. East of the Rift, the central highlands slope down to grassy plains, dry thornbush country, and the ocean.

Located in East Africa, Kenya is about nine-tenths the size of Burma (Myanmar). The country is bordered on the north by Sudan and Ethiopia, on the east by Somalia and the Indian Ocean, on the south by Tanzania, and on the west by Lake Victoria and Uganda.Administrative and international boundaries with Sudan do not coincide, and there is a possible claim by Somalia based on unification of ethnic Somalis.
    Major Rivers and Lakes
The main rivers of Kenya are the Tana and Galana (known as the Athi in its upper course). Most of Lake Turkana and a small part of Lake Victoria are located in Kenya.
    Climate
Kenyan Farmhouse A neat green hedge surrounds a farmhouse near Kisii in the southwest corner of Kenya. Here, a typical rural house has a thatched roof supported by walls made of mud or bundles of branches. Seventy-five per cent of Kenyans live in small rural settlements, where they raise crops and livestock. The most successful farmers raise enough food to feed their families and have some left over to sell, while others must take part-time jobs to earn extra income
