Kenya's forgotten island
Picco-dots on my toenails are all that are left of Bushura's artistry now... "I have a story for you!" was the line she used, in her sing song voice, to lure me in. As a writer it was a bait I couldn't resist, but I soon realized that a story of words was not what she had in mind. She wanted to show off her skill, to experiment with a new medium by painting my palms and forearms.

Kenyan Language
As throughout most of Africa, western culture is creeping in and mingling with or eradicating traditional ways. Swahili and English are the national languages. However these have been combined to a new language called Sheng that is a fusion between the two and parts of other languages. This is spoken exclusively by the young and is still very much a street language.

Beads
There are loads of things to buy in Kenya for a craft mad traveller. Beadwork is fantastic and there are so many forms depending on the tribe. Beads worn differ from tribe to tribe and symbolise ages, status, beauty and array of other things within the tribe. Even different sects of a tribe prefer certain different beads to express their traditions. Amongst the Masai , the Ilkisongo prefer dark red and dark blue beadwork whereas the Ilpurko favour light blue and orange. Beadwork also can express feelings as girls often give armbands as signs of love to young warriors.

You dream
of a safari vacation and exclaim,
"How cool!"
But I wish you could see what the pictures don't show.
I can try to tell,
can try to show, a land of dusty streets lined with merchants. Everyone selling and no one buying. While children, sparsely clothed, chase an old, worn-out tire for play. And the air is perfumed with the rotting stench of a nearby trash heap. I wish you could see what the pictures don't show. Beautiful, chocolate-colored women carry tree trunks on their heads and babies on their backs. Never wavering. The Masai dance in their sunset wraps. Shrouded with fierce pride and shrewd intelligence. While hyenas laugh at the moon, and children sleep with empty bellies. I wish you could see what the pictures don't show. Abandoned street boys huff glue. Now too brain dead to understand love, if anyone ever bothered to offer it. And men lose hope with no money, no future

89. Lamu Kenya - Hotel Lamu, Lamu Culture, Swahili - Lamu Culture
Information on the Lamu Swahili culture in kenya. Linksto Lamu hotels, and lodging.
http://www.africanmeccasafaris.com/kenya/lamu/lamukenyaswahilis.asp
Often people ask us the difference between the Swahili people and culture; we have often responded with the answer "you mean, the Kiswahili language and the Swahili people"! The Swahili word is an easy alteration of the Arabic word called Sawahil, meaning coastal. The Swahili culture came about from the inter-marriage of the African Bantu's and the settler Arabs starting before or around the 12 th century. The language that rose from this cultural mix was Kiswahili. The Tanzanians, specifically Zanzibaris, or the Swahili people prefer to boast about their authenticity of the Kiswahili language, pronunciation and grammar in comparison with the others. The original Swahili people can be found on the East African coast at places like Mombasa, Lamu, Zanzibar, Pemba, and Malindi. However, the preservation of the original culture is easily found in Lamu and Zanzibar, on the decline though.
Swahili people are not Arabs. They are more African if anything else but they tend to gravitate towards the paternal culture and religion, Arabic and Islam. Their look and feel is very Arabic. The men are often seen "hanging" out in their barazas (bench or sitting place), sipping their Kahawa (strong Arabica coffee), and clad in their traditional Khanzu (white gown) and Kofia (prayer hat). The women can be often seen scurrying around town in the bui-bui's, walking across from shopping centers or friends homes. The Swahilis are assumingly, a friendly culture. Their friendly gestures of "Hujambo", "hallo hallo", "vipi", "mambo", "story" and "leta habari" can easily be overhead across from the serpentine alleys of Mombasa, Zanzibar, and Lamu; these are various ways that their daily salutations are presented.

Religion, culture, gender and rights Index
CULTURE-KENYA: Women to Women Marriages not Exclusive to the West Katy Salmon NAIROBI, Mar 14 (IPS) - - An unusual court case in Kenya proves that women to women marriages are not something exclusive to liberal Western cultures. Grace Wanjiru Mburu, 70, is fighting to stop her partner's stepson, Joseph Kimuko from evicting her, from the four acre plot in Kiambu, central Kenya, where she has lived for over 30 years. Mburu argues that she inherited the land from her 'wife', Elizabeth Wamaitha Ngaruiya. Ngaruiya died in 1998, leaving Mburu as the sole registered owner of the contentious plot. The two got married after Ngaruiya failed to bear children in her marriage to Kimuko Senior. Such symbolic marriages used to be common among the Kikuyu, Kenya's largest ethnic group. It often occurs when one of the women is unable to have children and they generally do not have sexual relations.
